So upset when I heard that Mickey had passed on. He was probably the ultimate "greatest guitarist you've never heard of". I remember Martin Ace saying "people don't know he's the greatest guitairst in the world, they just think he's some prick from Merthyr!"
Saw Man many times at The Torrington in North Finchley, as a band they could be great but there were times when Mickey did stuff that just made my jaw drop.
Couldn't you just scream when Mickey does his solo - Something that we've all seen and loved loads of times over the years. It's never gonna happen again! - so sad.
I remember when Martin debuted at Winterland following Ken's sudden departure. He was so animated Deke kinda stared him down and he got a bit more stationary. We were sitting in the first row of the balcony with a sign saying 'Man Gets Up' Marty saw it a gave us a hearty wave. 19 years later I was backing Martin and the Tydfil Thunderbolts on snare and hats after their drummer, Cedric, opted out of playing during their SF stay. I was a couple years into drums so it was a thrill to sit in.
Does anyone have the other two songs from this show that were on youtube til recently (Many are called was one, can't remember the other) used to watch them all three all the time and now there's only one!
I helped the band set up the PA system in 1974 in Edinburgh. Took a day off from school. They did a sound check:Rubbish. Then they let us into the dressing room to share some tasty smokes and I got to play Micks SG as seen on this clip. Actually a Les Paul on the headstock : very valuable. They then played a blinder.Opening line from Mick : we're not the best band in the world but we smoke the most dope.. Got paid thirty bob... Saw Iceberg in Edinburgh a few years later. Deke is the man. Classic.
Hah! We saw Iceberg in support of Man on that same tour (Aberystwyth, King's Hall). For the last three Man numbers, both bands joind forces - about eight players altogether. Awesome... Best space-rockers I reckon.
Man provided many of the 70's redeeming musical moments, and several truly inspirational ones (the album 'Be Good to Yourself' for one). There was so much great stuff around that was seldom heard on radio. The truth is gradually emerging via You Tube that there was abundant life beyond the Glam, Punk and Prog cliches beloved of f**witted cultural historians and rubbish Mancunian BritPop copyists!
MAGIC. Saw Man Loads of times. Makes me laugh when you hear Noel Gallagher talk about the 70s - Slade and T. Rex!!! What about Micky and Deke. I really feel that people that didn't discover Man in the 70s have missed out on something in life. How could you die without hearing Spunk rock?
I just bought the Greasy Truckers cd. I've got the vinyl version (Rare) and guess what it's got Romain and the embryonic version of Bananas on it. Spunk Rock sounds F****** great, it's been remastered they the original tapes of the whole concert. With in between songs comments by Deke. Get it now!!!!!!!
Couldn't agree more,WINO'S RHINO'S... Scotch corner, micky & deke's blistering solo' is pure class, 'Back in to the future'another of mans riffy tunes. Saw them in '75 @ Cardiff Castle.Loads of welsh dudes shouting fxxk off you Steeleye Span Bastxxds... They were one of the support acts... no contest!! Nadge
Saw Iceberg in support of Man at the Kings Hall in Aberystwyth. Man played then both line ups gigged as a combined unit, about 1974. I think Deke was using the riff then and whoever was on bass just pounded this one note all the way through... bam..bam..bam..bam Audience was hypnotised. But when I asked it was a gig that neither Martin, Deke or CutittotheBone Jones could remember. But I was there! Keybordist smoked all through. Finished with a big air-raid siren and we went home happy.
What a surprise. Never expected to find this band here. I bought their maximum darkness album in 1977 and loved this track.but never expected to see them here because they have always kept a low profile. Thanks very much for posting it !!!
Anybody got a vid. of 'The Ride and the View'? Deke (Roger) told me it was based on a hair-raising trip he'd made as a passenger. 'Afterwards the car was clicking and creaking as it cooled down!' he said. 'Terrifying' Perhaps wisely, Deke does not actually drive, or at least he didn't back in the 90s when I had the pleasure of meeting him...
I found all incarnations of Man pretty wonderful. I think my favourite was the 1990s MAN: Jones/ Ace/ Weathers/ Leonard 'cos they'd got every lick and improvisation completely nailed. They can make magic descend like no other band can manage.
Not sure if I have a fav line up. Saw them in Shepherds Bush in the 90's with Terry on drums. I guess If I really had to choose then it would definately have to be the Maximum Darkness line up....but then I just love the sound of John Cipollina's guitar.
That must have around the last time they had Terry on drums...I thought he was a dynamic as ever , hard to believe they parted company after that...no complaints about Bob he is really summit, but I do highly rate Terry Williams.
I'm really pleased to be able to say I was there too, each time, plus at the Hand and Spear gig and at the Chiswick Town Hall gig (where a powercut plunged the venue into Maximum Darkness for 20 minutes.
this is great ....and there is some John Cipollina stuff starting to turn up. If I had the kit to convert vhs to mpeg I could add to this.....I don't think Man have the same heavy handed attitude that the management of Hawkwind have....to think I really rated Hawkwind.
There is only ONE {M+A+N} (however ) give me their first 4 anyday, after that....oh sorry, wino's is brilliant too,,oh yeah shite..Be Good ......is also good, but after that,,,,I don't know.
A couple of years ago my two eldder brothers and I decided that MAN were the only band that the three of really loved and we went to watch them play at glastonbury. When I shouted 'C'mon', the stock reply was 'we're playing as fast as we can'. Guys, your music remains with me through my adult life and has given me countless hours of pleasure. Thank you so much.
For what it's worth... this is Man line-up #11; featuring Ace in his temporary bass player role prior to the recording of 'Maximum Darkness' (featuring John Cippolina) - To many this is the classic quartet - the same line-up as #5 that gave us the superlative live sides on Greasy Truckers & Padget Rooms; one of the greatest bands ever to walk the earth.
seen these guys in action few times blow you away brilliant god bless you micky

Pissing about on the web today, just read of Mickey's passing in March of this year. Sad. Too young. Rest in peace.
Remember a concert at Massey Hall in Toronto . . . early or mid 70's. Man and the Strawbs. Still one of the best concerts I've ever experienced.
