  • shes so beautiful

  • The same year at the same age than Kate, Madonna was becoming a star getting naked and singing "Like a Virgin" and "Material Girl".

Kate was putting one the best albums ever made by a female artist.

  • This would make anyone miss MTV's golden years. Twix-sponsored as it is, compare this to the sexist nonsense she had to deal with in the UK. This is a great spot.

  • Thank You KATE!!!

  • Did you know that when the video's producers approached Donald's agent, he/she refused to pitch it to him, so the producers contacted Donald directly!

  • A woman singer fulled clothed? I'm so confused. (Yes, that's sarcasm.) J.J. 's radio background so in evidence here, both his voice and his interview style. Someone from Canada complained in the comments that they don't have good music interviewers, but I watch Jian Ghomeshi's CBC Qtv interviews here on YouTube, and he's quite good.

  • @iamsammybe THIS!

You're completely right. There are talented and imaginative musicians today but most can't hold a candle to Kate Bush. Her music is abstract yet powerful at the same time. Sometimes musicians become so abstract that their music becomes poorly delivered and quite strange but Kate Bush has a healthy balance of imaginative writing and powerful delivery.

  • although there are many wonderful and interesting genius musicians throughout modern music you really just can't match her combination grace, intelligence, beauty, talent, creativity, vision, articulateness. etc. in any other artist.

  • I never could understand why Kate was so huge in Europe and Canada and never got airplay in the US.

  • Another wonderful interview. Brava Kate!

  • Wait.... So at some point MTV had good musicians on it, played music and wasn't full of brainless morons acting stupidly for money? Wierd.

  • She has the sweetest speaking voice.

  • oh the hair :') the big, big hair. Love Kate so much

  • The interviewer really put her at her ease.

  • Kate Bush would have just have been successful the samtime in 1978 as in the UK but it takes a lot to break the US some people have instant success, some take time like Kate a whole seven years, and some don't make it at all. Kate is great. Donald Sunderland was brilliant in the video good choice.

  • Oh when Mtv was actually worth watching! I remember this.

  • This is such an intelligent and perfectly, delicate interview. . . Instant favorite. <3's for Kate, and much respect for the unsung J.J. Jackson. ^^

  • I remember watching this when it first aired. It was beyond exciting that Kate was finally receiving some long overdue attention here in the States. JJ was really the lone intelligent presence on that network back in the day, and it's really nice to not have to cringe in embarrassment at an American interviewer's questions to Kate. Bless him. Thank you, k8fan, for this clip!

  • Great interview, Thank you very much for uploading!

  • a goddess, still a goddess

  • So in other words she copied a book.

  • @parksy010101 So she did in her firt hit, wutheting heights, try to tell the story of a book in a song in a few minutes, she can ;-)

  • thank you for this xx

  • wow the interviewer has the most soothing and unthreatening voice! his questions are great! i wish they had decent interviewers like that nowadays! instead of stupid girls and boys asking musicians what their favorite colours are!!!!

  • @ToniHedley The late, great JJ was a radio professional long before the channel that used to air music videos started. He got his start in the 1960s at WBCN in Boston before moving to LA and spending more than a decade in radio and TV. So year, he had a deep love and knowledge of music, and knew Kate's music and her level of influence.

    He is missed.

  • wow yeah i bet he is! i just love watching this interview, both because of kate and him! thanks!!!

    :)

  • reminds me of diana mudaria

  • Great interview! Thanks for sharing. I remember how difficult it was getting her music in the US. Had to use my cousin's connection to a record distributer to get a copy of Hounds of Love. My cousin thought I was a little nutty about some "unknown." Hah!

  • I know! After they couldn't figure out how to sell The Kick Inside in the US, EMI-America actually pressed copies of Lionheart, then changed their minds (I have one of these "destroyed" LPs). They didn't even try with Never For Ever, finally releasing The Dreaming. Hounds of Love was preceded by a "Mini-LP" and a release of all the previous records.

But on the other hand, Kate wasn't working especially hard to help the record company sell the album. She has the level of success she wants.

  • She is sweet, soft, and jet so powerfull and femenin!! I like her being so honest about her tour. She just didn't do another tour by choice. Great thing, just say it.

  • You've got it backwards - Boy George was trying (and failing) to look like Kate.

  • @k8fan Leave George alone, they're both very attractive people, Kate and George O'Dowd. Anyone who denies that is pretty close-minded.

  • @k8fan Boy George hasn't got the looks or the talent of Kate and he never WILL I agree that he fails

  • Message to Kate Bush:

It is a fine song. You have done justice to the emotional side of Wilhelm and Peter Reich's stories. I enjoy listening to it.

The mass media is such that in all probability, you won't be reading this. I'm happy to say it anyway.

Message to everyone (including Kate Bush):

Isn't making an effort with people who can respond directly to you more sustainable? A more enriching and life-reinforcing action?

Thanks for the song, the clip and this interview.

    Replies welcome.

  • I'm up all night listening to 'Cloudbusting' on repeat, wanted to know more about it and then found this video. What a great interview! Both of them speak in such a pleasant way.

Kate Bush. Beautiful music, beautiful vocalist, and so much class. Thanks for having this video up!

  • Wow such a great interview. Really a shame what became of "that channel".

  • Wow even her speaking voice is fantastically beautiful.

  • It's very soothing and she is so charming.

  • Well guys! You Know what?

    Kate is just FANTASTIC.

  • I love the way she smiles when he says about the Twix advert.

  • kate always seems so humble... really appreciate that!

  • "right after this word from TWIX." Lolz!

  • she is a south coast girl.

  • It's great to hear an interviewer and an artist like this- well spoken and honest yet keeping their egos in check before they say anything unnecessary or unreasonably ignorant.

  • You are so right!

  • I love you, Please come to America!

  • God what a lovely lady! I'd marry her in a heartbeat!

  • really lovely interview, find it hard to believe it was mtv.

does mtv have anything to do with music now?

  • As far as many efforts on the English spoken word goes i think she has a nice (speaking) voice and either way what does it matter, i like her voice, spoken or singing, she will always be someone i admire regardless of how she is percieved by others.. :)

  • she has a very posh accent

  • Really? We've been told by fellow Kate fans in England that her accent is actually considered a fairly common one. The actual words they used were "the same accent as all the used car dealers".

  • no she has a classy accent, im english so i know, she's lovely!

  • She's from Welling, Kent and went to an all-girl Convent school. But if you watch earlier interviews, in some she had a bit of an affected accent for some of her very first ones.

  • Classy is the word :-)

  • its not posh in the slightest.

  • haha "im english, so i know"

her accent isnt posh, exactly like koncorde says, "well pronounced" but its not posh.

IM ENGLISH SO I KNOW FUCK

  • my reply was to the american guy that isnt familiar with the different styles of english accents, and yes i know the difference between posh and classy, you however dont appear to know enough to be able to make a valid comment without using filth to get your point across, how sad for you and how sad for the english language.

  • you were told that fuck is filthy by society..

if fuck means sex....then are you calling sex filthy?

i was simply taking the mick out of your comment "im english, so i know". x

  • It's "well pronounced" rather than posh. If anything it's a perfect unaffected neutral English. However compared to the vast majority of the UK (where everyone has affected accents of some variety) it's common to mistake "clear pronunciation and diction" for being posh.

I live up north, and despite having a "northern" accent I'm considered well spoken and "posh" because I use the occasional long word and am (relatively speaking) well spoken and clear.

You can tell she's a southerner though :D

  • Nice, i like the interviewer, he's respectful and asks slightly more interesting questions than other people i've seen interviewing kate. nice voice too.

  • mtv was so much better then than the shite it is now

  • it has just become really badly dumbed down, as though it had been made for hyper-active (badly behaved) children!

  • Holy Smokes! VJ's used to speak in complete sentences????

Kate is awesome by the way.

  • Comment removed

  • Thank-you for posting - a good and respectful interview.

  • She's beautiful. I love that little dimple high on her left cheek.

  • k8fan: thanks for posting the video. Cloudbusting is the Kate Bush video which I love the most. I know it is all personal preference but I really feel the will behind lyrics like "just saying it could even make it happen". That energy is what empowers me. Its what I think her work is all about but I personally had to wait until Cloudbusting came out before I felt it. I'm glad it happened. Your editing was great by the way. I also liked this, the first interview of hers which I have seen.

  • Of course she knows what the book is, she pulls it out of Donald Sutherlands pocket in the video !

  • Wow! MTV used to be about music, didn't it?

    Hehe, miss those days.

  • now i understand the phrase ...DROP DEAD GORGEOUS!!!

  • An interviewer who does no research, shows no understanding, and stumbles along with simplistic questions yet despite this Kate's rare talent shines through, what her delight was her thought provoking style breaking music and what her charm she is to listen to.

  • If you see the other interviews on you tube.....(live at 5)Yikes!!!! This guy did alright. Respectful and gracious. She seemed at ease.

There is one where they really rub her the wrong way...Constant subtle insults by the interviewer.. But I cant't find it anymore.

They keep stopping and starting, cut her off and never take the camera off her, showing her discomfort.

Refer me if you know the one

  • That would be the "Unedited Night Flight" interview.

  • That is it.

I found on your page after posting.

    Great stuff, well done.

  • I don't have the unedited Night Flight interview on my collection here. It's too painful. I do have the unedited MTV interview, and I love it. A lot of the viewers complain that the interviewer sounds bored in that one, but he comes up with great questions and gets excellent responses from Kate. The Night Flight one the questions are from this bimbo without a single fraction of a clue.

  • Kate is the most fabulous being in the universe.

  • samgub, i hear you but what about a peasant farmer in Indo-China 3,687 years ago who sustainably worked the land so that he could feed his/her family, children, ancestors and other members of the community. I'm not saying that I have heard of such a person or know that s/he exists but raise it to address what I consider to be an important point: we are all the most fabulous beings in the universe. Kate has her limits as she said with touring. All the best.

  • The moderator mentioned her older videos using "wild choreography," while this particular video doesn't feature it.

This may possibly be why I prefer this video to her other ones. Not only was this mix of the song wonderful, but the accompanying video was so perfect for the story being told.

She's an excellent singer, but I'd prefer she not try to dance much. hehe

  • aaaaaaaaaaw thats so sweet she doesnt know the book if you see her reactions and avoiding to answer what the name of the book is!

  • It's CloudBUSTING - check the CD

  • wow MTV was a lot better in those days, much more relaxed, less dumbed down and consumer orientated. It wasn't even focused on the lowest common denominator- it was just more intellectual, more interesting all round. Of course Kate was fabulous but that stands to reason

  • there is gentle quality to her that very much reminds of women i used to know when i lived in ireland, which isn't surprising as her mother was irish.

  • when a man looks at a woman his brain compares her face to a template of beauty (golden mean).i believe kate is closest to that template .her face is geometrically perfect.its like god put together all the things that turn men to jelly.

  • Watch the opening of the video to "Army Dreamers" - it makes her bottom lip look dead weird.

    Not that I'm quibbling...

  • Oh please... Not only is that nauseatingly brown nosing, but rather shallow, something that I doubt your idol would appreciate.

  • JJ was a professional - that means making the interview subject feel at ease, and hopefully eliciting interesting responses. And Kate is a difficult interview subject. She can be evasive and prickly when asked about things she doesn't want to talk about. She'll remain unfailingly polite, but you can see the point in many interviews where she shuts down.

If an interviewer being polite and friendly is defined as "brown nosing" in your personal lexicon, I'm afraid I can't help.

  • No you dumbarse. I was replying to a comment, not to the video.

The one that goes like this: "when a man looks at a woman his brain compares her face to a template of beauty (golden mean).i believe kate is closest to that template .her face is geometrically perfect.its like god put together all the things that turn men to jelly."

    What a load of vomit.

Someone needs to learn how to use YouTube comments properly.

  • Grossly underrated. A phenomenal songwriter.

  • cool yet i wouldnt of liked to of sat on kate bushs chair it looked like it had been mauled by a dog i bet she was glad to get out of it

  • Absolutely splendid interview of such a wonderfully talented artist.

  • Goddess.

  • and then she did the the line the curve and the cross later on in her film days

  • She doesn't seem to want to talk about the subject of the clip. lol

Anyway the guy was lucky to be interviewing her. I don't think I would have been able to countain myself though!

  • i hate that americans think that "success" is defined by how successful you are in america...theyre so ignorant! kate bush is the best thing since sliced bread - americans are fools sometimes!

  • She is incredible!

  • Coming from one of her male fans!! We love this lady oooh soo much!! Keep it up Kate! :)

  • Amazing content-filled and intelligent interview. ADHD has caused havac for modern TV viewers.

  • Great interview. I think Kate Bush is tied with Prince for best artist of the 80s. And she seems so down-to-earth, intelligent, and sensuous. She's 1000x sexier than the lascivious, talentless female artists that MTV pushes these days.

  • @OutisPan MTV pushes Musical artists?! In what time slot do they do that?? I must see.

  • Is she well known in America now? She's a national treasure!

  • No, she is pretty much a "cult" artist in the US these days. Not really the fault of the record company, as she's not done any promotion for the last album, and very little for "The Red Shoes".

  • she is wonderful

  • favourite interview by her that i've seen so far, the rest were british-robotic

  • To call Kate bush an air head is like calling George BUSH A LEADER !

  • The bloke interviewing her is way more clued up than other Americans.

  • that means nothing....lol.

  • It just appears that way because M*V used to hire people who actually knew something about music, not just image-conscious fashion douchebags like they do now. Anybody who cares about music is a million miles away from the home of Jackass and The "Real" World.

  • preeettttyy muchhhh!!

  • Kate Bush always seems like a very pleasant person when being interviewed. Not only is she an incredible artist, but apparently also a genuinely kind and intelligent human being. That's unfortunately rather rare these days.

  • I love kate, she is amazingly unique, NO ONE ELSE LIKE HER ANYWARE, she has pure talent unlike todays music!

I prefer her look in the 80s, she has lovely hair! Cloudbusting is an amazing song, it always makes me cry...It will always be in my heart!

  • Accidentally deleted a comment when attempting to reply:

    mediawardotcom asked:

why did you cut the Word Of Twix out? If they're willing to send me a case of them, I'd be willing to put it back. :-)

  • Please do. I'm interested to see how complimentary (or not) Twix was about Kate Bush's music.

  • she aint an air head she is just a little bit crazy in a good way

  • Airhead?? She actually sounds very articulate and intelligent. She answers JJ Jacksons questions directly and succinctly. I know Kate Bush is intellectually stunted when compared to the likes of Lil Kim, Britney Spears and Pink, but airhead? Really?

  • I can't believe that anyone could seriously consider Kate an "airhead". She's frighteningly intelligent and a legendarily tough interview subject.

  • Yeah, Britney is an intellectual giant AND

    supports Bush, GEORGE that is.....

  • Amen!

  • "I much prefer Cribs, Pimp My Ride and Punk'd"??

    That's worrying dude..

This is what MTV SHOULD be like! Good questions, no bullshit, real musicians and artists!

    J

  • Oh gosh indeed if they continue to ruin peoples minds with television bullshit of all eras

  • That was MTV back then!

Wow... it really did go down the toilet in the 90's.

Kate Bush is still great though

  • Oh gosh, the music of 2008 (and the 90s) is the worst c(rap) ever devised by the human race. It will go down as the emptiest garbage ever.

  • I have to generally agree. Any of the good music (there has been some) gets buried beneath mounds of general crap. It's really very sad.

  • im 12 and im always just thinking about kates songs!!i just wish that i was born when she was around first!!!...xx

  • im 12 and im always just thinking about kates songs!!i just wish that i was born when she was around first!!!...xx

  • Never seen these interviews before. Thanks very much.

  • amazing interview. amazing person

  • amazing interview. amazing person

  • Fantastic interview. What a lovely, soothing, ultra-feminine voice she has. Note the vast difference between 80's MTV versus that of today: now it's an endless stream of (c)rap and idiotic "reality" bullshit.... You can't even see real musicians like Kate on VH1 anymore.

  • Excellent interview! She come over really well! They don't interview people like this anymore.

  • Great posting, i have never seen her interviewed before.

  • Kate should have got involved in some serious acting after the Hounds of Love album.

  • She only acted in her videos and two other things - "The Comic Strip: Les Dogs" and her own "The Line, The Cross & The Curve". She was OK in Les Dogs, which didn't really require her to be much other than stunningly beautiful, but some of her work in TLTC&TC was...painful. I love her, but it was true. I don't know if she would have become a better than average actor.

  • man interviews were so much longer back then

  • i want her if you know what i mean REALLY want her

  • I just love the way that guy laughs at the end after he asks her to tour, he goes "haha" like he knows that's never gonna happen lol

  • never seen it before. good and interseting interview except for the mtv adverts.

    Q. Kate did an interveiw around the same time for the BBC old grey whistle test, has anyone got it to post up. thanks

  • Ah, the one we know as "The Twit Twins". Two pinheads who couldn't get over their idiotic amusement at the presence on the album of Rolf Harris and Percy Edwards. I've got a good quality copy back home and will put it up when I get a chance.

  • looks like there both having fun , interesting questions

  • Great interview.R.I.P JJ

  • I like her voice <)

  • Great interviewer too - rare nowadays that someone lets the the person being interviewed speak at length without interrupting.

  • I simply cannot believe that MTV could have been like this once. My generation's MTV seems to have forgotten that the "M" is supposed to stand for "Music" - you certainly wouldn't know it after sitting through any of the slew of reality shows they constantly dish out.

    Great interview.

  • True that MrSis89. For all I care MTV should be called RTV. Reality TV.

  • Or maybe just "STD"? It would definitely be closer to the truth... ;p

  • Funny to see the videos he intros, Arcadia & Billy Joel, that's how you know it's the 80's. MTV when it was really something, Great clip!

  • This was definitely one of the best KB interviews I've seen. Wished it was longer, the intellectual depth between these two...

  • dear Robbin Williams, take note, the americans never accepted your music because they couldn't stand your pompus 'oh look i'm famous' (and niether could I) Kate Bush is the down to earth who knows that you can only speak with your music and not by fame or ego.

  • Thank you for posting this most exellent clip

  • Never seen this interview before: Thank you so much for uploading it!:-)

  • I am not familiar with the interviewer as I am a Canadian. I did have some chance back in 1984-5 to watch some MTV. Today in Canada our music interviewers are real light weights. This interview harkens back to a better time in music. When was the last that an artist like Kate Bush has been produced?

  • I miss it when she actually promoted her albums.

  • Kate looks soooooo great! Ever she does! Thank you for this video!

  • I have intelligent ears then

  • Its amazing how rich a subject becomes with a great interviewer. Can you imagine KB being interviewed by Dick Clark? Thanks for posting this!

  • Kate Bush is so smart. Her music is only meant for intelligent ears.

  • This was the golden age of MTV!

  • I loved Nightflight(well not so much towards the end of its run) and deeply miss that kind of programing

  • J.J was a old pro by the time he got on MTV.

He's long been known on radio.I wrote Martha Quin once in the 80s and she actually wrote me back handwritten and a autograph photo as well...i have that packed away someplace though i havent seen it in ages. I was an Alan Hunter fan myself as well.

  • No, the late J.J. Jackson was a skilled professional, and I believe he genuinely liked Kate's music.

  • this wasnt a train wreck like nightflight

  • thanks for sharing, very interesting

  • thanks again k8fan!!!!

  • J.J will be missed.

  • No, still only the one tour back in 1979.

  • J.J. Jackson was a great VJ, second only to Martha Quinn. :) I don't think she toured after this, did she?
