No it was a draft lottery that year because of the lockout. Record had nothing to do with it because the NHL wasn't active that year. And yes we are blessed to have the best. Where's Buffalo's 2 Stanley Cups?

As a Pens fan I should say you're both correct. The Pens had a greater chance because of their poor finish. It was a weighted lottery that did give everyone a chance, but it was based on your finish throughout the past five seasons and how many #1 picks you had. Really, not getting Ovechkin gave the Pens a chance to get Crosby.

No, he's not. It was weighted based on prior finishes and #1 picks. The lower you finished, the more balls you had. If you'd had a lot of #1 overall picks in that time, you lost lotto balls. Everyone did have a chance, but some had more than others. I love the Pens, I'm so glad Sid is here and was shaking when he was chosen but the fact remains it was a weighted draft based on previous 5 seasons finishes.
