@Dementedfishie237 you should have more than one rat because they get lonely and really like company. My parents won't let me get one either so I am doing lots of research to show them I can look after them. But yah you do need more than one rat.
I have fell in love with Dumbo rats about 5 months ago, but my parents won't let me have one! :( I already have quite a lot of info on them, but can i just ask, is it best 2 have 2 rats becoz i could probs only have 1 if i was gonna get1! But i just would quite like some other ppl's advice! Plz reply, thanx! :D x
I'm thinking of adopting a baby and I'm a little nervous cause it's my first intro. I have 2 adult females. I've been reading articles and watching videos like crazy.
Ah, this makes me miss my ratty's even more! Poor boys all came down with the same problem - abcesses. :( Do you think it was a hormonal thing? Perhaps if I'd had them neutered, do you think that would have been better?
I have a adult female named Ollie and a baby dumbo (female) named Emma, i got Emma yesterday. And when i introduced Ollie to Emma, Ollie was the one squeeking, is it normal?
Im sad coz my rats doesnt get along. maybe because one is a 2 years old rat and one is a few mths rat. When they meet, my 2 year old rat will bite my few mths rat. Wht can I do? I want them to bond with each other. So they will be accompanying each other.
Omg I love baby rats! They have so much energy and I love watching them hop and run around, its too cute! My four rat girls still enjoy galloping around in my living room, and they all love each other.
I had a an elderly female rat whose companion died. So I got her two little baby rats (a brother and a sister) for friends. She genuinely thought they were her babies and would carry them in her mouth to the nest when it was time to sleep. When she died, and the babies grew up, I gave them a little one of their own and they did the same thing. Rats are very sweet and accepting of new comers.
Mo-mo looks a lot like my female Missy! Missy's "hood" is more of a light cream color though and her base color is more white! Very cute ratties, but I'm sure the baby is all grown up now!
Oh my gosh your hooded rat ( it looks like ) Looks EXACTLY like my hooded rat Phat Patti! i post a vid of my ratties and you can see that they look identical!!! <3
i have alot of questions about your rat. i am planning to get one and i want to know a few things on raising and the care of it. i've noticed how many videos you have of your rat, im coming to you with the questions, so please get back to me.
i have two grown up female rats and i was looking for another female however i can only find rat kittens. would it be safe for the baby to be kept in the same cage as the two adults and would they get along fine?
Its always best to place the baby and one of the alder rats in an unfamiliar territory such as a separate cage so that the older rat does not become territorial. Do this with both of the older rats individually and see how they bond with the little one, make sure to keep a close eye on them and keep a water spray bottle handy in case the baby get bullied, they will stop to clean themselves if they are sprayed (only use bottled water, not tap water). ...
... Once they have bonded then you can transfer the baby into the cage with the older ratties. Personally, I have never had a problem introducing newcomers and they tend to show the baby that the are the dominant one, but it passes within the day... all the best!
12 years experience with rattys; Proud owner of 3 adult rats and 3 ratty kittens :)
I say depends, some times pet store have them. I think breeder rats are too expensive and everyone wants one so most are reserved. I have a siamese baby dumbo, i bought her from a pet store :)
@refinnejnodrog1 no, dumbos and fancy's are pretty common. i have a fancy and she is the sweetest thing but it took me a long time to convince my parents. they are great pets! you should get two!
I was wondering how long you should leave a male dumbo rat in the same cage as a female dumbo rat when your trying to breed. I have them both in the same cage now. It is a very big ferret cage so my female can get away and go into her own bed. I was just wondering how long they need to be in the same area during the time I am breeding them.
I think finding good homes where they are such intelligent/needy animals and since can produce a dozen babies would be a lot of work and responsibility.
When breeding Rats you should only put the female in there for an hour and watch (sounds grows but you have to insure she is impregnated).if she starts to nest. If not, then keep trying. Also make sure they are not related this can cause malformations. I unknowingly had two Mice breed and they were siblings and one offspring was missing a foot. She lived to be 3 yrs old!) and another had a really long tail so be careful!
You are lucky-my one year old rat Lily is about the same size as MoMo and my baby rat Cordi is the same size as Muzzy-I have been introducing them for a few weeks now on nuetral ground and boy does Lily not like the new addition. It's natural for them to fight-but I am seriously afraid Lily is going to harm the little one because she is super aggressive towards her...so I have opted to keep them in seperate cages for good...well..hopefully one day Lily will come around.
omg please dont introduce them!! i made a huge mistake, my rat is about a year in a half and shes the sweetest but she was introduced to a baby rat and she killed her!! i will never ever forget that, the worst moment of my life! it was so sad, on my birthday this happend. i have one rat in this huge 5 level cage and i cant even bring another rat in the picture. its a shame
Well I actually have them cohabitating just fine now. The baby is now pretty good sized and able to defend herself when Lily gets nippy. I have a third female now and they are happy a ratty family. I am sorry about your baby rat-that is very sad. Rats are like people in that they all have different and distinct personalities and some just aren't social.
the big one looks exactly the same as my dominant one Benji, sounds like a similar personality too! we are trying to introduce him to his new adopted brother plop but plop is a drama queen n is petrified of him. i wish they would just get over themselves already n get along!! (p.s we r introducing them the proper way n we know all about how to do it n blah blah blah :)
males can live together but the best way for that is to buy two brothers as babies so they grow and get used to each to one and other but on the other hand if u have a single male rat and introduce another male rat to him when hes used to being alone they will probly fight
In general unfamiliar males can be aggressive. In this case the adult was a six month old male who had been kicked out of the pack by the alpha male. He was very gentle and nuturing to the baby. They are very sweet with each other, even though the baby is now bigger and the leader of the two rat pack
its okay to put males together, i have 2 male rats and they use to fight, but when crystal the female one died, they are together like bred and butter lol, the little ones so full of energy, cute!
Of course it's a good idea, in fact introducing two females is harder, rats avoid confrontation. An adult rat does not feel threatened by a baby and are naturally very sociable anyway. So long as he's non aggressive male and it's supervised then it's fine.
@Dementedfishie237 you should have more than one rat because they get lonely and really like company. My parents won't let me get one either so I am doing lots of research to show them I can look after them. But yah you do need more than one rat.
