I don't know if "the French were a liability" in Verdun, but they stopped the Germans, then reconquered all the ground. That was 2 years before the US gave us a hand (thanks! sincerely). Two men of my family were killed there, leading their platoon or company. Thus, we looove being taught lessons of bravery by ex-neutrals.

that's true, the US helped at the end, just they didn't join till the end and they joined because a ship which was (most likely) smuggling supplies was destroyed when the Germans clearly stated that they would destroy ships in that area, I don't think the allies would have lost without the US but their wealth did help out at the end

the US university system is far from the envy of the world, it often restricts the poor from proper education, not all are welcome, for a long time the US was quite xenophobic as well, now the universities just discriminate against those who don't have money or aren't related to those who have power, but if you do have enough power and money you can get a free ride with most US universities

the US spent a small amount in WW1 compared to the other countries affected, they didn't do much at all until the end, and then they claimed the glory from victory, they waited so long that they had all the money to spend, they hesitated a lot to join WW2 as well, and even then Hitler was the one to declare war on the states, the US did not rebuild Europe, I'm sure they helped with fixing things up but I'm sure almost every major country in the war did also

Things change fast in time of war: Let's not confuse 1914 armies with what they became in 1915, etc. The French army in 1914 was in full transformation, from a XIXth century army (brillantly coloured uniforms, traditional cavalry, etc.) to a modern one (the most advanced field gun of the time, the 75 mm, a "horizon blue" uniform just voted by Parliament, a small air corps). The German army was, by far, the most powerful in the world. The British army was a small body of good professionals.
By the way, it is just undecent for people seated behind computers in 2008 to use expressions such as "The British (or the French, etc.) finally moved their asses in 19**". I don't think many of you would be able to endure what these men endured in WW1 - nor to fight like the British at Mons or the French at Guise or in the Ardennes, in August 1914.

You are forgetting the battle of Somme which the british started to draw the germans away from verdun. Without that battle, the french would have most likly fallen.

I don't know if "the French were a liability" in Verdun, but they stopped the Germans, then reconquered all the ground. That was 2 years before the US gave us a hand (thanks! sincerely). Two men of my family were killed there, leading their platoon or company. Thus, we looove being taught lessons of bravery by ex-neutrals.

that's true, the US helped at the end, just they didn't join till the end and they joined because a ship which was (most likely) smuggling supplies was destroyed when the Germans clearly stated that they would destroy ships in that area, I don't think the allies would have lost without the US but their wealth did help out at the end

the US university system is far from the envy of the world, it often restricts the poor from proper education, not all are welcome, for a long time the US was quite xenophobic as well, now the universities just discriminate against those who don't have money or aren't related to those who have power, but if you do have enough power and money you can get a free ride with most US universities

the US spent a small amount in WW1 compared to the other countries affected, they didn't do much at all until the end, and then they claimed the glory from victory, they waited so long that they had all the money to spend, they hesitated a lot to join WW2 as well, and even then Hitler was the one to declare war on the states, the US did not rebuild Europe, I'm sure they helped with fixing things up but I'm sure almost every major country in the war did also

Things change fast in time of war: Let's not confuse 1914 armies with what they became in 1915, etc. The French army in 1914 was in full transformation, from a XIXth century army (brillantly coloured uniforms, traditional cavalry, etc.) to a modern one (the most advanced field gun of the time, the 75 mm, a "horizon blue" uniform just voted by Parliament, a small air corps). The German army was, by far, the most powerful in the world. The British army was a small body of good professionals.

At lemberg the Austrians lost eastern Galicia and centre of all its rail and road networks. Then the Russians seiged the great fortress of Przemysl, that city fell on 22 march 1915, with the Austrians losing 120,000 men. The Austrians would later retreat to the River Dunajec 129km further west then Przemysl. Soon all of Galicia was abondoned. The Russians lost 250,000 men and 40,000 were prisoners. But out of 1 million Austrian soliders, 350,000 were lost as were 300 guns.

At the war broke out, the BEF was 70,000 and the germans were pushed back at the 1st Marne thanks to the action and counter attacks of the French
The Brits kept the left flank but made no attacks unlike the French. The first time they decided to move their ass was at the Somme where the half of the allied army was French
Marne casualties: 250,000 French and 13,000 british...

I also got my information from the show ''The Great War'' aired on the military channel which is also a book. In both accounts they have the BEF at 150,000 and the BEF recieving 95,000 casulties.

Actually,to be quite frankly, it was NOT, frenchlion; German troops were engaged at the Eastern Front, too at that specific time.Ever heard of Battle of Tannenberg where Paul von Hindenburg did receive plaudits so to speak.Besides, even more importantly keep in mind that the Britons did start offensive measures at the Somme in ( in spring of 1916 I guess ) so that the German Oberkommando was forced to regroup some forces at the Somme to contain that Brits offensive !!

On their own? 1914 1918 : Germany was allied with Bulgaria,, Turkey and Austria.And at Verdun ,sorry France was on its own.

Let's just say that without the British, Candians, ANZACs, French Colonials, and (eventually even) the Americans, indeed France "on their own." And would have been speaking German well before November of 1918.

Just a precision, French Colonials were...French;British fought in great number at the end of the year...1915, Canadians were less and the ANZAC fought in great number OUT of Europe(Egypt and Dardanelles); 1916 :at Verdun ,French were alone; at the Somme they represented half of the Allieds,until 1917 (without speaking German..)

On the western front there have been only Germans on their own against the troops of the British Empire and against the french troops including their colonies !!! Also on the eastern front Germany faught mainly alone against the Russian Empire at the same time! The Austrains were occupied with the Italiens...

the population of Germany today is 82 million. back in WWI it must have been roundabout 70 million. By the way Germany also had colonies (e.g. Cameroun) but we didn't abuse them to fight for us! Sorry for that little polemic.

Lol cameroun... germany was not a colonial empire...the only ones were Great BRitain folowed by France. Germany was ready to do this war not France, you didnt have a fight since 40 years.

don't be sorry ,there is no polemic! but in 1914 the Empire Austria-Germany had a population of 82 millions inhabitants and if we "abuse" of colonies ,on 1million 300 000 french soldiers killed , 198.000 were from colonies.How many French Alsaciens- Lorrains obliged to fight in the German army in 1914 1918?

You are forgetting the battle of Somme which the british started to draw the germans away from verdun. Without that battle, the french would have most likly fallen.
