  • hah nick jonas is shorter than colm wilkinson, that is embarrassing, anyone else notice earl carpenter sounds exactly like philip quast, would of thought it was him if i didn't know better.

  • Comment removed

  • My god! that is one of the most beautiful things i have ever hear! them singing all together is just AMAZING! <3

  • Nick Jonas was 17 when he did this, yes he's not Michael Ball but it was still an amazing effort from an untrained 17 year old you cannot compare the two because they are completely different artists.

  • @mckcworld Thank you for keeping the camera on the entire stage and all three screens. Finally got a chance to see everyone's reactions to the other Valjeans during "Bring Him Home." John-Owens little head tilt at Colm, Alfie's smile at Simon, Colm throwing his head back at Alfie, and Alfie's genuflection to Colm at the end. Hugs and kisses all around -- there and here. Thanks.

  • Think this version was the first show I guess. The PBS version is much different for both encores. This must have been the "rehearsal" show.

  • the current london cast of les miserables are taking part in west end eurovision on 21st april at the piccadilly theatre, tickets are almost sold out, last few remaining, its a truly faulous night, lots of clips of previous west end eurovisions on youtube, tickets can be booet at ambassadors tickets website or by calling 0844 871 7630

  • This was incredible and thanks for posting. Something special about a live recording in the theatre.

A hundred years from now, when historians look back on these days, Les Miserables will be one of the truly shining moments. The posers and the tryants who have littered the pages of history are soon forgotten, but great art lives on. Long live Les Mis and the triumph of the human spirit it celebrates.

  • Was this the matinee?

  • @kryptokyrie yes this was the matinee. Alfie did not get down on his knees before Colm Wilkinson in the evening performance.

  • I get chills everytime I listen to these songs

  • i love lea..they always ask her to be one of the members again and again because she is THE BEST...

  • This was my first time to ever see Les Mis. I was just blown away by everybody, especially Lea Salonga and Alfie Boe! Somebody asked if Nick Jonas has asthma; I don't think so, but he does have Type I diabetes and wears an insulin pump. I'm going around the house singing, "Bring him Home"!!! Loved it, loved it, loved it!!!

  • Of all the musicals that I have seen, Les Mis is and always has been my favorite. It brings out such emotion of love, devotion, and faith. I think Victor Frankl would be so honored if he were to be in the audience. Loved all the artists of this, and of the 10th reunion,

  • nick is only 18 and can sing like that i would love to see you guys go up there and sing the way that he dose leave him alone no one can ever bet the 1985 cast of les miserables they are amazing and always will be the new cast are good its hard to sing these songs and hard to fill those shoes i think they all did an amazing job

  • i think the orchestra was drowned by the large theater. the "enthralling" part wasnt even really that convincing.

  • I almost cried at this bit ;_;

  • i love the play

  • All of them blow Nick Jonas out of the water. He was horrible in this.

  • Who was the second person singing after Colm on "Bring him Home". I recognise him, but I don't know why.

  • @lucywills1

    John Owen Jones

:) He's now the Phantom (and was before) in London's production of POTO!

  • I like how the other Jean Valjean's step back to let Colm finish the note. It's beautiful.

  • Michael Ball 5.06... quality has walked on stage! Actually all of them!

  • Michael Ball is just so amazing! I wish he could stay young and play Marius forever! Especially if they're going to make it into a movie. Sigh. Jonas was just... weak. He did okay, though.

I love how Michael Ball's face lights up when the crowd started cheering for him. A real entertainer. He clearly loves the stage.

  • @ilovejosephriviera I cheered when I saw Michael come on stage at the end. I knew they were going to have him sing if they put him there!!!!

  • To brwngator who asked if i had any proof ?? My full name is Oliver Spencer, if you google the Les Miz original from the Barbican and the west end cast you will see Gavroche was played by myself, Ian Tucker and Lisa Hayden ( we had to share the role as child performers are only licensed to do a certain amount of shows in one week ). I have the origanal scripts for Gavroche still im my possesion too !

  • @oliverspen I am a devoted fan of Les Mis and am very happy to confirm this to anyone who dares to contest it. Is there always a girl Gavroche to cover as well as two boys? I wish they had never removed Little People from the show, it was such an upbeat and jolly song, and I love to listen to the old vinyl version of the Original London Cast Recording. To my mind, no other recording made since then can match it.

  • Thanks to Chrislef for your kind comments and lovely to hear from such a fan. Have a lovely christmas and glad you enjoyed the show!

  • earl carpenter i think ...

  • Who plays Javert in this performance of One Day More? It doesn't sound like Norm Lewis

  • @mfiorell It's Earl Carpenter from the touring production of Les Mis.

This is from the afternoon performance, where Roger Allam and Alun Armstrong unfortunately couldn't attend - so Earl Carpenter and Matt Lucas sang their parts in the encore.

Both Roger Allam and Alun Armstrong were there for the evening performance though.

  • Michael Ball needs to lose weight

  • I wouldn't have known about the movie event if I hadn't been in a restaurant & heard on the radio they were showing a 1 night movie event of Bon Jovi's Circle tour. So while there I saw the movie ads for Les Mis on the 17th & decided to go. They should really advertise those things better! I knew Les Mis was doing a US tour but didn't even know about the movie event until I was there watching the other concert!

  • Thx 4 posting! It's great 2 see live video from the audience & hear the natural sound! Saw this at the movies in the US on Nov 17 & it was MUCH better than an old concert version I have on VHS. Didn't care 2 much 4 Nick Jonas as Marius, he wasn't BAD but his voice wasn't as strong as others I've heard. Plus he looked a little young/scrawny compared to others around him! LOL Can't wait to see it on the 2011 US tour, already got my tix for Nashville! I just hope Jonas isn't playing Marius.

  • Here's the thing. I saw this at the cinema last night and those I watched with agreed that Nick Jonas was out of his depth. BUT, that's not necessarily the worst thing in the world. He did fine, was on key and sung just fine. And he has certainly earned his stripes playing Gavroche. Having said that, compared to the other full-throated belters he was paired with in this concert (Alfie, Colm, Lea and the original 85 cast) he just sounded...shallow. It's not a dis...he's brave to do it.

  • Thank you for posting this. I saw this in the movie theatre tonight and this particular moment moved me so deeply.

  • It just pisses me off that everyone one is criticizing this boy for doing something he dreamt of doing for several years just because he's "not good enough" according to them! I'm an aspiring writer and I know I'm never gonna be as good as the writers I look up to like Julio Cortazar and Edgar Allan Poe. But that doesn't mean I have to give up my dream! especially if some asshole said so! Good for Nick Jonas for doing something no one thought he could do! Even if it isn't perfect!

  • However, Nick it's young and he still has a lot of things to learn. If he applies himself I think he could be doing more musicals in the future. I saw him at Queen's theatre and I was pleasantly surprised! He did a very good job. Maybe he's not Placido Domingo, but give the kid a break!!! He's just getting started! Stop being so darn judgemental!!

  • For me saying that Michael Ball is a better Marius than Nick Jonas is like saying that Laurence Olivier was a better Hamlet than Jude Law. Kind of obvious yet a little unfair for Nick and Jude. I mean, duh! Michael Ball is a musicals' veteran, he obviously has more experience than Nick, a larger career in musicals, and to top it all....He was the FIRST Marius!!! OF COURSE HE'S GOING TO BE BETTER THAN NICK JONAS!!!

  • @Nati82 Good point, but if you listen to the original london cast recording of Les Mis where Michael Ball was 23 and didn't have so much experience, he is still significantly better than Nick Jonas

  • @costerluver You have a point, however, Michael Ball worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company and graduated at the Guilford School of acting, famous for having a VERY INTENSIVE Musical theater program, that's a training that Nick Jonas didn't had! And I have the original London cast recording on my Ipod , I know that he's better (But Nick is not hopeless!) . And no, I don't think a 23 year old has the same voice maturity as a 18 years old. there's a 5 year old difference there!

  • @Nati82 Yes, Guilford School of Acting has a great musical theater program. BUT Michael Ball didn't study that - he studied acting. He has never had musical theater training or even vocal training.

AND he didn't work with the RSC untill he was cast as Marius back in 1985, and he hasn't worked with them since.

  • oh michael ball, colm wilkinson. just incredible. <3

i agree that nick jonas wasn't the best casting for marius.

but to be fair, it's been a lifelong dream of his to play marius in les mis. and he didn't do an awful job. i thought he sounded better here than he did when he was at queens.

    but thats my opinion ;)

  • Colm Wilkinson your simply the best!

  • It would be great if they could make a DVD where they combined all the various performances of Les Miserables over the 25 years.

When they had the 10th anniversary concert, I thought the finale was amazing and didnt think they coudl top that, they have.

  • At the intermission, I was talking to someone and we both commented that Jonas was "the weakest link" in the show and that so many former Marius's would have been much better. Low and behold at the end Michael Ball walks onto the stage and I nearly jumped up in my seat to tell other people in the theatre "THIS is how these songs SHOULD be sung". To hear Micheal singing those songs at the end made the movie for me.

  • I saw this on the big screen here in Aussie and while a love the originals of Valjon (sp?) i adore thi snew one!!!! his voie is so strong and beautiful and his eyes are so expressive :D xx thank you soo much for posting this :) xx

  • Brought back some lovely memories. Thank you so much for posting this vid!

I agree that Nick Jonas was a really weak Marius. Didnt like him at all. They could have got Martin Crewes!!! Haha!!!

All in all a great concert.

  • @LizSaill Nick Jonas sounds wheezy... does he have asthma?

  • @bretthemora dont think so. Not too keen on him though!

  • Alun Armstong was there on the evening performance along with Roger Allam too...

  • Colm Wilkinson will always own Jean Valjean for me (:

  • @Stact001 me too, Colm is and always will be Valjean but Alfie Bow is so good I love them both

  • i love it but it would be so much better if whoever it is who is talking nearby would save their conversation, i want to hear colm wilkinson better lol.

I was in cinema watching this and loved it, was like having the best seats in the house but i wished the cast could hear my claps and screams.

  • So beautiful... sounded like Jean Valean was praying in an echo chamber...

I miss not seeing Ruthie and Alun and Philip and M. Maguire in there.. oh, well. Great performance all the same!

  • @nightswimmer99 Oh me too! I grew up on the 10th Anniversary Concert and as much as I love Lea, I really missed Ruthie! And Krimloo was amazing but Michael Mcguire played the part so well I can't imagine anyone else in the role of Enjolras.I don't believe the 25th anniv cast holds up to the 10th one, but still, what an amazing production.

  • Colm Wilkinson-- one of the best Jean Valjean I have ever heard...

  • Wow! Goosebumps!

  • I do agree that Nick Jonas was a business decision to cast as Marius, and I think he could have done a whole lot more acting-wise with the character. However, I believe he did an excellent job singing this beautiful music. And I'm not just saying this because I'm a big Jonas Brothers fan.

  • frances rufelle <3

  • God on high..oh Colm you did to me again and that last note too i'm weepy shambles...just awesome this

  • Thank you so much for posting this, it's amazing, and I can't wait for the DVD now! Wish I could have been there, it must have been an incredible show. Like everyone else, I got goosebumps watching the original cast sing, but nobody yet seems to have mentioned Alun Armstrong who is an amazing actor and incredible asThenardier, so well done Alun as well as Colm and Michael!

@FazerWiz Nice to know Phil Cavill was there somewhere, I saw him as Valjean in 1996 and he was brilliant.

  • Where abouts is Philip Quast?

  • thank you so much for posting this! Colm Wilkinson and Michael ball!

  • Comment removed

  • Jonas was by far the weakest link but what would you expect? The techniques of singing and filling a large area, whilst acting and having to move your head, which all affect the sound, and projecting etc. it takes time to learn these things. Even the 'new' stars found by the television reality shows all have training behind them. I think CamMac asked too much of Jonas, IMHO. It was just amazing to see the original cast, still incredible. Colm and Michael are absolute musical theatre GODS!!

  • @poppet59 Dont forget Lea Salonga, although she did Fantine this time. But her version of Eponine back then was a lot lot better than whoever did it this anniversary.

  • @bretthemora Agree. But I think the Fantine on the 10th Anniversary was the best ever. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan, BIG fan of Lea but it seems Lea couldn't own Fantine as she does with Eponine and Kim. Ruthie owns Fantine.

  • @bretthemora agree. Lea was so much better than her. Lea is so amazing in playing both roles. her Fantine is just equally brilliant as well.

  • @bretthemora ITA. And Salonga was so much better singing- acting- and especially presence-wise than whoever did it in the 10th anniversary.

  • Stunning

  • My opinion is that casting Jonas was a purely business decision. There are a lot of DVD's of Les Miz. The devoted fans will always buy another. However, putting this out on DVD with Nick Jonas as Marius promises to deliver a massive amount of sales. AND a whole new audience.

It's a brilliant marketing decision - if not the best from an auditory perspective from devoted Les Mis fans.

  • @lrjolson I agree with you on this. But I still think it was wrong to cast him. The 25th anniversary shouldn't be about publicity and DVD sales. It should be about celebrating the musical and those who have made it what it is. That's why I prefer the 10th anniversary - the Dreamcast.

I'm not saying that they should have cast Michael Ball as Marius(allthough I personally think he's the best for the part) but what about Gareth Gates from the touring version? He's so much better than Nick Jonas.

  • @06s091 yeah. Gareth GAtes was AMAZING and nick jonas wasnt quite what i expected///

  • He was soooo weak compared to the rest of the cast. They must have be p*ssed off!!!! When Michael Ball came on to sing the encore, it was like someone switched on the lights!! Naughty Cameron Mackintosh!!

  • ie Nick Jonas was weak

  • @lrjolson I didn't like Jonas, didn't like the idea of picking him. I agre, it was a buisness decision.

  • @lrjolson yes.... purely business... but it would be like something you cant be proud of, knowing you were cast only for marketing purposes... no offense to the Guy and his followers... sorry...

  • @lrjolson

The sad thing about this marketing decision is that watching this DVD 10 years from now, we won't remember who Jonas are, we will only be left with an "unsuitable" Marius destroying an overall amaaaazing show! And that hurts a lot the devoted Les Mis fans!

  • i was on the stage at this time as a member of the original cast, i played Gavroche in the oringal production back in 85, bought back so many memories, many thanks for posting this video and thanks to everyone who came, was an amazing day..( and your right about micheal MegaKaren :)

  • @oliverspen so glad someone in the know has said that about Nick Jonas too. It was such a negative aspect of an otherwise outstanding concert. Anyway, this must have been such an amazing and emotional experience for you! It was great! Congratulations and bravo!!

    Kx

  • @oliverspen Wow!

  • @oliverspen on a list of things I genuinely loved... the 25th anniversary concert was one of them... thank you....

  • @oliverspen have any proof of that?

  • @oliverspen What a wonderful job you all did and what a wonderful musical.

  • oh and I have to agree that Jonas was the weakest link. Micahel Ball showed him how it should be done at the end.

  • @MegaKarenG cant agree more! and the original Gavroche said so, so we must be right!!

  • thank you so much for posting this. I was there and this was just spine tingling. A magical night and worth EVERY penny x

  • I love the conductor's jump at the end of One Day More :)

  • can't wait to see this part on the DVD. What legends!!

  • oh i'm not just saying that because i'm a nick jonas fan. that wasn't very long time frame to train.

  • i think nick was an amazing marius do you know the kid only had two weeks to train his voice classically for this event. just because he hasn't been singing opera as long as everyone else doesn't mean he wasn't right for the part. marius was nicks favorite role and carmen promised him this role six years ago before he became a pop star. people need to cut him some slack.

  • @nickyjfan455 I don't mean to be horrible to the guy, but he was a let down. This was a momentus occasion and fans were paying on average over £100 per ticket. They didn't deserve excuses that one of the lead characters was young and inexperienced, they deserved a spine-tingling performance. All the cast delivered that except for Jonas, it wasn't his fault, it was bad casting to give him Marius, especially when there was so much other talent on the stage... all in my humble opinion...:)

  • @FazerWiz it wasn't bad casting. it was who carmen wanted. it's not about the fans of the play it's about the people who made the musical possible and they wanted nick. they all thought he did an amazing job. and if that was you up there and it was your first big musical wouldn't you be nervous. the nerves got to him. and it seems that none of the people who have been trained for years had a problem with him. alfie said he enjoyed working with him. isn't it about people having fun? they had it.

  • @nickyjfan455 I'm sorry, but at over £300 ($500) for a pair of tickets, I don't care how hard someone tried and that he was nervous, it's not about the trying, this isn't a school production where it's all about the effort, he has to deliver and he has to be fantastic like the rest of the cast were, but he wasn't. And it's not about HIM or any of the cast having fun, it's about the audiance having fun, they're the ones paying the money and you can tell by the muted applause they weren't happy.

  • @FazerWiz Just out of interest, who are you talking about?

  • @tombaker1222 Sorry the order is a bit messed up here I know, I was talking about Nick Jonus, the 18 year old Disney pop star who played Marius.

  • @FazerWiz Oh right. Yeah completely agree, Mackintosh and the team had some odd ideas for casting this time around. We've had a run of bad Marius' actually - Gareth Gates is awful too.

  • @tombaker1222 Yeah agreed, I think he cast it like that because Marius is supposed to be a student, so he wanted someone young, but rather than give a chance to a relative unknown with amazing voice (which is what he should have done, there are plenty out there) he went for a teen pop-idol - or in the case of Gates, an ex teen pop-idol, and they just don't have the goods to deliver. Other surprise casting was great though. Alfie made a fab JVJ and Matt Lucas was hilarious as Thenardier.

  • @FazerWiz totally agree. I'M mad, I can't imagine someone who paid big bucks to see it live.

  • @FazerWiz this my first time seeing it and i thought it was great. carmen just show everyone that if you put you mind to something you can reach any dream. and he was making a point when he casted someone so young. you should place your self in nicks shoes. you know how hard he worked on this just so he could try to impress you? harder then you think he dosen't like to disapoint. i can't imagine how upset he was.

  • @FazerWiz i'm sorry i'm not mad at you for your opinion. i just think you should see it form someone elses to.

  • i am so jealous of anyone standing next to colm wilkinson and michael ball. i am in awe

  • It killed me that I couldn't be there. Thanks for taking the effort to bring it back for us.

  • The best night ever!!! i feel so priviledged to have been there, and to share it with so many true fans.

  • Sir Colm Wilkinson is the best!!!

  • @jaytagle LOL!! I'm sure Colm will be delighted to learn that he's now a knight!!!! :o)

  • Alfie Boe was absolutely amazing at this concert! From beginning to end - he was flawless!

  • WOW. Thats really amazing!

  • Colm sounds exactly the same as he did 25 years ago. What does that fella put in his tea? He's amazing.

  • @casper50 I couldn't have said that better myself!!!! :o)

  • This was fab but such a shame they didn't have Phil Cavill in it, he was one of the very best JVJs. He, along with several other major stars, were in the choir!

  • @FazerWiz My opinion, Jeff Leyton (Ireland in the 17 JVJ's on 10th anniversary) was the best for me. After Colm that is. I saw this at the O2 and loved it. I saw Jeff Leyton at the Palace Theatre and loved that as well. So much so I met him afterwards. :)

  • @KingMingus Yeah Jeff was fab too, but I guess I'm biased as Phil is a friend of mine and got me my tickets for the show :) I still think he was too good to be in the choir. Just as a reminder for you, I've attached a video clip I took of him doing a sound check:

You'll find some other songs of his on my channel, including one of him singing "Bring him home" in my lounge :D

  • @FazerWiz Saw the videos. Bloody Hell he is good. Were you friends with him before or after he was in Les Miserables?

  • @KingMingus Oh before, we were school friends. By his own admission it was lucky he could sing because he was terrible at everything else lol.Phil was the longest running JVJ and was in the !0th DVD as England and at Wembely. He said the choir at the o2 was packed full of serious talent, quite a few other lead players but they went with the Barbican/Queens/Original cast theme so there was just no place for all the other talent. Shame, I think they could have found a better Marius for the show.

  • @KingMingus Sorry, they've disabled posting links but the vid of his I was referring to you can find by seaching for the video number: 5BLerL0YVxs

  • annie4will - I know just what you mean - it was pointless trying to pretend there was just something in my eye - spellbinding - what a complete privilege to be part of this audience

  • This was amazing ..omg i'm in tears again !!! the best night of my life !!

  • I love seeing stuff like this... look at all the members of over the 25 years performing this show? WOW!

  • Thank you for sharing what an amazing night and such a privilege to hear all of these wonderful musicians on one stage

  • @tatr123 Simon Bowman from the Queens Company

  • Amazing seeing this live, the most moving, amazing vocal performance ever.

  • Saw it in Limerick at the Omniplex... magnificent!

  • Went to the cinema to see it, the show was sold out! It was amazing, I'm still buzzing today after it and will be for days to come... Colm Wilkinson still has it!!!

  • I saw people coming out through the tunnel. Because I was so far back, I didn't see who they were. When I heard Colm singing, my instant reaction was 'Fucking Hell that's Colm Wilkinson. The show was epic. I'm surprised there was no standing ovation for Alfie Boe after Bring Him Home. We were clapping for long enough.

  • watched it at work on my cinema screen, i take my hat off to the entire cast job well done.

  • Great video! I was also there. Absolutely incredible!

  • That was fabulous. I wanted to give a standing ovation while watching it on my computer. :)

The 4 Valjeans bring tears to my eyes and listening to Michael Ball is always a treat.

What happened to the Enjolras from OLC? Looks like Ramin replaced him at the very last minute.
