  • This was really helpful, thanks! My Auntie jotted down a knitting pattern and didn't check if I knew how to double-knit, so I was stuck until I found this. Just out of interest, why do you call holding the wool in the right hand "American style"? It's how I and all my family do it, and we're all English. Just curious :)

  • @cg0841 Ah yes, I mean, "American, i.e., English style..." it's just a habit, as in the States we're used to calling it that. Hey, we co-opted French Fries, now English knitting too... :)

  • Thank you for providing this set of videos, I found them very helpful, and I think I will give this a go.

  • @Jabberdoggy You are so welcome! I hope you do give it a go. :) I'd love to hear how it turns out!

  • Liat, I love the casting on method you use for double knitting. Is there any way to bind off so that it looks like the method you use for casting on? For example could you do the Kitchener's stitch but only take off the front needle stitches and then bind off the back needle stitches separately? My head starts spinning when I try to think this through. Seems like it might work but am I forgetting something?

  • @ThisnThat54 Hey there! Yes, there is a special way that I use to bind off. I can't post the link in these comments, but you can search my channel for double knitting and you will see the bind off video. I hope this helps!

  • @LiatMGat Oh Liat, Sorry! Duh! :D There it is! I'm set. Just nineteen rows to go before binding off. Couldn't have done it without your videos! I've learned so much. I feel like I've just treated myself to some rich dessert. Next onto the socks on one needle. My hubby will be wanting some felted slippers. Can hardly wait! Thanks again. You've got loads of friends out here I'm sure!

  • @ThisnThat54 Aw, thank you so much!!

  • Do you have the polka dot chart somewhere to print and I just haven't found it yet? Sorry if this has been asked before and thank you for doing these video's. My forte is crocheting and while I know how to knit some you make me feel like I have even more experience under my belt! Kudos!

  • @ladymoonblossom84 Sure! Just email me at liat (at) knitfreedom (dot) com and I can email you the polka-dot chart. :)

  • @hotdog1997 Video coming soon! But here's how you do it: knit the edge stitch, then k2tog twice, *pass the second st over the first st (bind it off), k2tog, rep from * to end.

  • thank u so much i been wanttin 2 do double knittin

  • @rachel12348 You're so welcome! I'm coming out with a new Double Knitting video e-book in a couple weeks! You can sign up at knitfreedom (dot) com to get the announcement!

  • I just learned to knit this last week. Is there an easy way to start this pattern for a beginner from the very start of the project. I'm sure once I start I can figure it out.

  • @addyrain Fantastic! If you just learned to knit, you are certainly moving along fast! Most experienced knitters don't know this technique. This video is the third one in the tutorial. Search my channel for Double Knitting Part 1 of 3, and start there.

  • Yay! I love this tutorial. So clear and easy to understand! I'm going to make a double knit scarf for my sister for Christmas now. :D So excited!

  • @LickinFlames Thank you for your comment! Sorry the sound is all messed up on this one. Have a GREAT time making the scarf - your sister will love it. She is very lucky!

  • i'd love to hear your thoughts about double knitting the bottom of a sock foot.

  • @desikitteh Ooh, that would be cushy! Double knitting in the round is possible, but not on only one side of the foot. What would you do with the "inside" color when you got around to the top of the foot? The same problem exists with fair-isle knitting (when you use two colors to make a design) - if you do it in the round, it has to go all the way around. Here are my thoughts: you could either duplicate-stitch the entire foot bottom, or knit a bottom pad and sew it on. What do you think? L

  • @LiatMGat i'm a toe up magic loop knitter and i use short rows for heels, so i was thinking i'd start the double after my toe increases, use the short rows to cast it off... use a variation of a sewn bind off for the stitches in the middle.

    does that make sense?

  • @desikitteh I am so curious do know if that can be done. Why don't you try it on a little tiny sock, just to see if it would work? Please let me know. I can't picture how you would get the double-knitting on just one side (the sole) of the foot. Keep me posted!! -L

  • @LiatMGat okay, what i'm trying is i've started the double knit on the bottom half of the sock as one would DK usually. but this stops the sock being knitted in the round in the usual fashion, it now becomes three rows on back, three on front, repeat.

except on the back, you slip the inner stitches on row three, moving the outter yarn as though you were still double knitting.

this may result in some small holes along one side, but i'm hoping the yarn is fine enough to avoid them being noticable

  • @desikitteh Oh, I see! Oh my gosh, that is so cool! And you could always sew up any tiny holes at the end. I am so impressed!

  • @LiatMGat i found another way!!

i'm on ravelry as desikitteh. check my "who says they have to match? socks" no holes this way.

  • Bonjour

je suis en train de faire mon premier Double Knitting, au début c'est très dur, mais au 3ème rang ça commence à rentrer dans ma petite tête

    Merci

    bisous

  • thank you so much, now i can do it.

  • wonderful videos! I'm so excited....as an ex owner of a yarn shop, I always wondered how to double knit. Now I know how! I agree with the other comment that you have a wonderful voice for this...very soothing. I look forward to more videos from you. btw, would love to see Part 2 redone...the last minute is lost in static.

keep on teaching...great job! Thanks for your time and expertise

  • @edgeofyonderfarm Thank you so much! You have no idea how lovely it was to receive this note in my inbox yesterday. And I'm sorry that the sound is all messed up - I know it's frustrating (to me, too!). Thanks again for your comment - it really touched me and brightened my day yesterday. Hugs, Liat

  • This is incredibly helpful! Thank you so very much. Shame about the sound difference, but it's quite possible to follow anyway. Thanks again!

  • Wow, thank you! I know, it's so wierd about the sound - I've tried many ways to erase and move the audio track but it's... fused.

But thanks for your comments and happy double-knitting!

  • @LiatMGat Thanks, I'm going to buy wool today. If... when I finish it (in about a decade ^^), can I ask you how to end ... cast off? don't know the English term... finish. Do the last row?

    - BTW you've got a very pleasant voice, very nice to listen to to be taught knitting :)

  • Thank you! You are so sweet. Thanks for the compliment about my voice!

As far as the casting-off, see my comment below to Nephelle and see if that makes sense to you. If not - holler and I'll help you out! Good luck. :)

  • AHHHH! Yes, right. That does make sense. Thanks. I've started on my double knitting project, it's going very well. It's so much easier than I thought it would be - thanks to your explanations! I would have dispaired if you hadn't explained about the opposite colour and background colour and how to read the chart correctly. Well, got to go, continue knitting ^^

  • @LiatMGat

Well, I can only say I love this technique!

Have you ever thought about cabling plus dk? Any ideas? It must be posible, yet still reversible, don't you think?

  • @Branween Great question! It's definitely possible. There are two ways to make reversible cables. The first way is unrelated to double-knitting - you work in 1x1 rib, which scrunches up and looks like stockinette but is reversible. For a C4R, your would do it over 8 sts instead of 4. I also think you could cable double-knitting: you'd just have to remove the stitches and move them around. I'm so glad you thought of this! When I write my e-book on double-knitting, I'll include this as a bonus! L

  • @LiatMGat

How exciting! Are you on ravelry? Is there any way to get your eventual E-book? =)

  • @Branween Of course! I'm everywhere :)

Find me on Ravelry as "liatm" and on Ravelry groups as "KNITFreedom" -- the best way to keep abreast of the e-book developments would be to subscribe to my video newsletter. I can't post any links in this comment but look at my YouTube channel to find links to my blog and everything else. Thanks for asking, and I look forward to friending you on Ravelry! -Liat

  • I like your videos on dbl knitting better then some of the others on you tube. You obviously know about the sound difference :), but would you mind explaining the bind off once done? Is it a reg bind off or is there a preferred method you use since your cast on is a different?

  • Hi! Thanks for checking out my video! For the bind-off, what I would do is knit the knit and the purl st together as if they were one st. Continue like this and bind off like normal. Does that make sense?

  • i keep ending up with purls on both sides...

  • Hmmm, I think you have switched your knits and purls. Make sure you KNIT the first st of every pair, and PURL the second st of every pair (the other color). I hope this helps!

  • wow so did you ever fix this video? cus the sound is very confusing... im trying to do what ur doing, but i think u say the opposite of wat ur doing. soooo. lol. all good other than that! now i know how to double knit! thank you, ur a good teach!

  • Hi, I'm trying to fix the audio right now.

  • @itakejelloshots I'm so sorry, I don't know how to fix the audio. I spent a good while trying to remove the old audio and move it so that it matched up with the video, but to no avail. Sorry!

  • Sound is off. Good visual, good audio tutorial, but very confusing with the sound off. :o(

  • Your first two videos were helpful, but your sound doesn't match what you are doing on this one and it throws me off.

  • I"m not sure I got it right. When you do the motif, are you knitting and purling the reverse colors compared to the background? Also why did you start the series with a heart and then you switched to a spot?

  • Thank you! I've put your video on my blog as it was so helpful. My only question, after watching all three tutorials, is how to bind off so that the bind off row matches the cast on row in the number of stitches, and in color if that's possible.

  • Thanks for the tutorial! I am a visual learner and having a start to finish video was extremely helpful!
