such a beautiful house! but the view sucks! 100,000 ?? that's such a deal for a house like that!!! well the repairs will cost just as much as the house but 200,000 is still cheap, where I'm from that house even WITH damage will come to about 800,000 or more and then the repairs... about a million in total, yikes my area is such a ***** rip off!!! :/
The contrast of beauty and excellence that mansion provides versus the Home Cheapo that now occupies its back yard is striking. With proper maintenance, that home could stand for centuries. The fact that more and more people fail to recognize the difference in substance between a marble-limestone facade, and the simulated brick and flimsy vinyl siding sold inside the Wall Street junk shop next door assures our decline. That home would cost more to re-create than that entire shopping center.
John, thank you so much for the histoy, taking the tour and posting the video. I also grew up in the area and drive by the property daily. I long to own that property & restore it.......if only the millions were in the bank account. Seeing what this property was in it's younger years, and knowing what it could become at the hands of someone who does not have it's best intentions at hand brought tears to my eyes. Again, many thanks for the tour!
I have to agree with you, the Home Depot is the real travisty. Utterly disrespectful to build it next to this historical, masterpiece. I would hope the local people would find aa use for this wonderful treasure and restore it.
The newel post most likely did not have a light. The piece of ivory was put there when the house was paid for. Lot of houses in the south were done that way. On tours of mansions or even more modest houses, it is always mention that the ivory was put in the newel post when the house was paid for. Anyone who entered the house would know without being told that the house was paid for.
Wow...beautiful home. That's so sad about the Home Depot next door, but if you have to turn lemons into lemonade, at least when someone goes to fix this up, it will be very convenient to get supplies, paint, etc.
@serendipity71109 good points there. will be done. whether youd form the missing plaster yourself or hire someone. hte supplies are not even a quarter mile away
I've been restoring my old victorian house for four years and it, too, was robbed of all the original light fixtures, but the beautiful woodwork and pocket doors are still here. Anyone who takes something away from these beautiful American treasures before they sell them is in my mind a criminal and a thief! Our original stained glass was removed three owners ago and put in the wall of their GARAGE on their new build! I would plant a long rown of evergreens to try to block the view of HomeDepot
This video was rather interesting. Toward the end of the video, I could even "feel" this house "speaking" to me, much like some Christians speaking in tongues. It's certainly much more exciting than Jeopardy, or, your "money" back! Of course, I had full screen capability enabled.
6:39 ...wow... haha... just before you said someone put in egg cartons, i thought they looked like egg cartons but of course didn't suppose they actually were that!!! crazy!
I did enjoy this video but the house is rather disappointing for something that is so amazingly intriguing from the outside. Are there laws in the US to protect these types of properties from being subdivided? ...there should be because this mansion lost so much when it lost its gracious grounds and lake. It is a shame you couldn't buy it because you seem to have the respect for history that this old house deserved.
Thank you so much for this tour. My husband, son and I have been admiring this gorgeous home since I started working for QVC and staying at the Sheraton. We have longed to see the inside and to walk around the property. You have fulfilled our desire (partially). We have been fixing up a Victorian with similar plaster work in Baltimore. Thanks so much.
omg how could the put a home depo right next to it i mean in my town we lived in one of the firt houses and we got a historicle monument award dipped in gold with a law that stated we could not change any of the physical features of the house paint it repair it but no remodeling
what a bad location for would not wnat to live there at all not with that Home Depot (eyesore) right outside my window. Not good for property value, how sad. All that white paint is ugly, like somekinda padded room ..... Once again ruining the bueaty and history of our nation.
It looks like a historic house like this would be on the way to complete restoration, and under protection by the historic society. I wonder what happened to the original chandeliers. It would be nice if they could be found and put back in the house.
I lived in this house for a few years with my uncle until I graduated High School. The house and estate are/were gorgeous. very little land remains of the original estate (600+ acres?) ; more or less just what the house sits on.
I grew up not too far from here (in a 1720's farmhouse) and was always fascinated with the house and property. I remember when it was rented to a motorcycle gang and assume that is when a lot of the damage was done to it.

It just shows that we Americans only care about our pockets - we couldn't give a hoot about the history of our country. So much has been lost to our wallets!!
Great video, beautiful home. The staircase is incredible. The newel post at 5:17 appears complete. In the 1800s, when a builder completed a grand home such as this and got approval from the owner that everything was to his satisfaction, the last thing the builder would do is tap a porcelain cap on the top of the newel post. It was kind of his mark and a stamp of approval from the owner. It may even contain some markings or a year of completion, Shame on Home Depot and the county zoning board.
Thank you for doing this. The information you shared is very interesting. When going through the rooms and the grounds you wonder what life must have been like back then. Well Done!
Nice video. Lovely shots of the details of the house. Good script and made one want to know more. Inspiring for anyone interested in preservation of old beauties.

I like to see rooms and visualize the memories that took place there, not stare at the corner woodwork for 8 minutes

Sad to see it in such disrepair, also, anyone that paints over woodwork like that should be taken out and shot.
