There was an similar occasion with Contra series.

There was Contra, then Contra II, and suddenly, an uber-crappy Contra Force (which was actually a game rejected in Japan) appeared. But some time after, there was Contra 3, which wiped out Contra Force out of the scene.

Something similar might probably happen with C&C.

I remember when C&C 4 was first announced, they said that there would be customizable armies. I thought they were making a "Create Your Subfaction" type thing, which would have been cool. But then they made those lame Crawler Classes. I saw all the cutscenes and some gameplay footage on Youtube and was not impressed. C&C 4 has Half Assed written all over it.
