I also worked with a 10W CO2 laser with dirty line jumps (it was meant for welding, not lab use for my undergrad thesis to strategically heat an optic made of fused silica and one of sapphire. My setup is now being used to correct wavefront distortions on LIGO 2. Working with IR was more dangerous than the Yag I used. It sucked; often you'd miss a little and get the sharp "pinch" of the beam. IR will go straight to your retina

@AnselmoFanZero Ever thought about getting an optics table, even a cheap one? And buy optics like mirrors with Gimble Mounts, half and quarter wave plates to control polarization? Laser light is always linearly polarized, so shooting straight on is not the best way to minimize reflection. You want to find out whether the polarization is vertical or horizontal. If it is horizontal, it is much safer to hit the surface from some side angle, as the reflection is reduced. not so for vertical.

A Watt is such overkill. Do you have any idea what kind of lab precautions you need to take with a class IV laser? I've worked with several Class IV's in different wavelengths, some visible, some not, and I'd never do this. It would be seriously easy to blind yourself just from the backscatter radiation without any proper precautions, not to mention any dangers to the skin of you and others, from scarring and potentially cancer.

Either way, I still think a Watt is a lot of power; you can achieve these results with less power, and hence it costs less to operate.

What are the laser specs? Is it a real laser (pretty clean spectral line, linearly polarized, etc.?

@AnselmoFanZero: right on, living by yourself solves the person wandering in problem - unless you get in an accident; I once accidentally lifted my googles using a 1 W frequency doubled Yag 532 nm (green) laser. All I saw was a flash of green before I got them back down. For OSHA reasons I had to repeat the optical test I took before using it, in order to document any injuries - sonogram your eye for retna detachment, tested eyeball pressure. I was fine but it scared the shit out of me.
