It's random. If you wait a while, the game glitches eventually and Yoshi leaves his normal walking pattern and walks off the castle. Sometimes it takes several minutes though, have to be patient with it.

I would say a freeze is when the games stops working, and does not let you progress any further...a freeze is just a name, doesn't physically mean that the games freezes...

Sounds like good reasoning to me. I use the term freeze when I'm no longer able to play and I have to reset the game to continue playing again, which is pretty much the same thing you just said :-)

As for what causes Yoshi to fall off, there are things that disrupt his walking pattern. There's one part of his pattern where he walks into a wall on top of the castle, which will either speed him up or warp him a little bit to his left. I'm pretty sure this has something to do with him falling off. And then at the end, he walks onto the slanted part of the castle and that's when you know he's going to fall.

As I said it's an evolution of the "Yoshi suicide glitch." That's when Yoshi falls off the castle and when he hits the ground, respawns on the roof.

Right here, Myles speaks to Yoshi right when Yoshi steps off the castle roof. This triggers Yoshi to bring up his dialog. After the speech and life handout, gravity kicks into Yoshi and he falls to the ground below. But since "Yoshi's events" are met now, he's in walking position as he hits the ground. Now he's stuck in an infinite loop of his walking animation due to the wall in his way.

Nice new take on your behalf of getting him to talk to you right before he falls "fully" off the castle. It's an evolution of Yoshi's well known glitch.

Originally, he'd walk off the castle and jump into the waterfall. But since the wall's in front of him, he's blindly walking to nowhere. I can see how SM64pro says this isn't a real freeze. But yes, I understand how the game is frozen to a degree since Yoshi walks that way until you turn off/reset the game.
