this may be a very stupid question but i have a 2002 polaris sportsman 700 and i had the whole atv jacked up in my garage off the ground and no matter when the yellow AWD switch is all the tires still spin. is this a problem or is it becuase the atv wasnt on the ground? thank youu.!
@skidoodoo800 Thanks.....these are 14" ITP SS108 rims, they bolt right up without spacers. However, the offset is different and the ATV has a wider stance than stock.
the input speed to the front and rear diff is the same. So when the rear tires start to spin and the front tires do not spin, the speed of the rear diff starts to turn faster then the speed of the front diff. This is the one way bearing coming into effect. As soon as the rear wheels regain traction and all 4 wheels are spinning the same speed the front end is freewheeling again, and not connected, because the higher geared differential is turning at a higher speed, being driven by the tires...
the real reason for the different ratios front rear is because of the hilliard clutch system.
The front end is geared lower (spins slower). The rear is geared higher(faster). What this means is when the atv is in motion the front differential is spinning faster then the rear differential. This is not a problem because the hilliard is basically a fancy one way clutch. Basically the front end is free wheeling and not "connected" to the rest of the drivetrain.
the sales rep in my area explains that the 5:4 ratio is for control. The front tires can roll and grip while the back maintains speed. A slow spped for maximum control. Works great I just got an 08 500 and I LOVE it! Great working machine and will always get you home.
it eliminats understeer, if front and back spun at the same rpm when u turn the front wll slide more becuase it is being pushed by the rear and still spinning. having the front spin slower you are able to steer without as much loss of traction while still being pushed by the rear and a slight pull from the front.
I seem to notice that the Sportsman doesn't seem to be the best for real steep hill climbs, maybe the longer wheelbase, I like polaris, the soft suspension, seems to bounce the atv, resulting in it flipping back on steeps, you may be able to take it up slow,or weigh the front down.
Nice demonstration.... For me the popo AWD with the hilliard differentials work lots better than say the Visco-lok.. Which to some may not be the case. But for MY RIDING style it is by far the BEST!!!
Man I just got the 08 800 touring and with the longer wheel base it is AWESOME on hills and seems to pull through the mud quite a bit better, but for hill climbs it is a BEAST!!!!
ha the polaris couldnt move

nice rims, did you have to get spacers so the rims would fit over the hubs or did they bolt right on

so does it help get better traction since the front spin slower?

why diferrent gear ratio? for different tire size back and front? and at high speed, shouldn't go good...

what are theese baggies tied on the wheels?
couz650 2 years ago
it is on the wheels to show how much the tire moved compared to the other ones

i liked the part when the wheels spun

how much did you pay for your wheels

Nice demonstration of the AWD though...

The rear spin almost 2 times quicker than the front, I wonder why

gear ratio is different in the diffs
brutebog650 3 years ago
For every 5 turns of the rear, the front turns only 4.
