I love Duke Special - a lot, but I have to say I think I like Neil's version of No Cover Up better that the original. Both fantastic covers, both fantastic musicians. Thank you so much for uploading.
The very beginning seems a bit high for Neil but he pulls it off <3 That version of "No Cover Up" is so haunting and deep- not to say Duke Special's isn't, but this just has such a different quality.
I wasent familar with Duke Special before this vid, but that song is wonderful, and it sounds beautiful coming out of Neil hannons mouth. I could listen to it forever. Same goes for the version of Tonight We Fly he did on this show
I Think that Neil Hannon is a better lyricist but I think that the Duke has a greater range as a singer (but this is all I have heard Neil sing in)...
Love both of them, but Neil's rendition of Duke's song is definitely the best of the two covers. He just knows how to convey the emotion in his voice better- something that comes from 20 years' experience, Duke's just not quite there yet. I also love the one note he changes in the bridge to make the second piano phrase into a diminished chord as opposed to Duke's original normal chord. Simple, but ingenious. Much more effective.
I agree completely, I love Duke's music and all, and he's a great performer but Neil's songwriting craft is much better and his cover here has the same sort of desperate, wallowing ache, slowly rising into cathartic climax, that's present in his original version of Mastermind, and, for me, really makes the song.

Both are stunning. Neil doing No Cover Up is amazing, but the Duke's rendition of Mastermind is equally haunting.

Both are fantastic in different ways.
Duke is my personal preference though. I met him before.

To my mind, Peter sounds more emotional but Neil still sounds awesome and very refined.
