My wife loves this song so when i asked her to marry me I sang her this song and lets say I do not think that we will cut loose like most younger couples do.
This iconic song set the pace and tone for all of what was to come in the 60's. It employed a kind of electric tension that fit more with the end of the decade than the beginning; In it you can hear the Kinks, the Doors, even the Beatles, Telstar... didn't just capture the moment, but a snapshot of the future.
Is anyone else depressed that this 50 year old song is every bit as good as it ever was and is twice as good as most things being made now? It's like we've learned nothing musically in 50 years. There was a brief up-tick in the 70s and 80s and then things took a nosedive since then.
@sunnchilde obviously your one of those old people born in the 50s and being exposed to this music when you were a lil kid.people always think the music that was around when theyre young is THE best.why dont you just move on and live in the current world, and stop living in the past.
@dirtytalk16 im 17, and i love the oldies, i would choose oldies anytime of day to the stuff they make now, it's alot better and more fun to listen to.
@dirtytalk16 And obviously, you are completely WRONG; cause it's really NOT a matter of living in the past, but HIGH QUALITY MUSIC, not Justin Bieber's crap! Just because we're living in the current world, it doesn't necessary mean we should listen to today's crap! BTW, OLD PEOPLE means, the ones who did not die at a young age, cause, (in case you are not aware of it), sooner or later, everyone is going to die anyway! Greetings from Brazil!
@pauleka1 I am not completely wrong. But I do find it irritating that people keep labelling todays music as 'Justin Bieber crap', and that we have learned nothing musically in 50 years (to quote sunnchilde) etc. There is a lot of good music being made today, it is just the fact that you prefer that particular genre/period or the old memories connected with them, that you say it is high quality music, and better than todays 'crap'.
@dirtytalk16 Dude I'm 18 and I've been listening to 1950s and 1960s music since I was a little kid back in the 90s. I can attest that even the music in the 90s sucked, and now its just horrible. I have no memories of this period, I just know good music when i hear it. Music today IS all electronically enhanced, lady Gaga, Bieber crap.
@classiccarguy93 yeah so what, and im 17. So why did the music suck? because you didnt really like the style! same with music today. I dont have anything against people not liking old music, just dont say that todays music is crap when its not.and btw,i like old music too.
@sunnchilde There's nothing like the misunderstandings related to cyber-chat. It happens to me all the time. I didn't take offense, at all. Bye the by, I'm in my sixties. Happy New Year 2012 to you.
I have been a child caretaker for about 12 years and I am proud to say that all the kids I have watched grew up listening to all my oldies! They are now teenagers and love a variety of music.
Young children who listen early to well written music tend to make better choices in music/imo.
I was born 1960 and growing up with these songs was special. They don't make songs and music like this anymore. Not that today's music has no merit it's just different. Happy Days
@cocomurray1 It's always nice to see other "young" people that appreciate the oldies that people born in the 40s listened to when they were teenagers.
@70kattan Clearly your music is superior to everything being made now and nothing made now will ever be looked back upon and considered classic. You are so smart and educated in music.
The theme to Crime Story. Anyone remember that short-lived TV series with Dennis Farina? This tune was period-perfect for that series. Viva, Del Shannon!
great song great artist but from what was said by his friends is that he became a recluse when the fame died out and he could not deal with it so shot himself in the head awesome artist
@babyimawantyou I'm sick and tired of hearing people say Del commited suicide. Accidents can appear to be suicides. Beside this, those who knew him said he was in good spirits the day he died. The doctor who ruled his death a suicide could have been a nitwit. Some of them are ya know.
Sorry to put a damper on things for this great song and singer but Del Shannon committed suicide in 1990 while suffering from depression. Real sad he had some great songs. 'Runaway' was a really great one.
chose this at a Christmas dirge of a party last year and it's amazing how many people got up to play it again and change the previous dirge. Song just has a magical beat! Fab posting.
@sergen292 You were born in a different time. We were the fortunate ones; we danced to this at all the Friday night dances... and, I can remember riding in cars with our "group," of best friends, around the SF Bay Area, after school, on rainy afternoons, and this would be playing. Good days, all of them...
in the summer of l961, I was l4 and got a summer job in a shoe factory (before all the OSHA laws prohibiting underage employment in hazardous occupations). whenever 'Runaway' came on someone's radio, you could hear that organ solo over all the noise and racket of the machines.
Okay like this is one of the best song that ever made.... don't wont to be disrespectful but today music suck so much compare of this music like around the 60's-90's are probably best years of music.. now is all about money sex drug booz... like some of music our good this time of years but oldie's where the best. Wish in few years the new bands who will come will play those kinda of music instead the 2000-2011 music..
The 60s through the 70s would have to be the best Era.. I wish I would have lived it.. My dad was so lucky.. Just so glad that he passed on this wonderful music to me.

I was a kid in the 80's and teenager/college student by the late 90's, despite all the new changes in music everyone I knew then loved oldies and they even dressed up in 50's fashions
This was a very commonly played oldie on K Earth 101 back in the 90's, when it was good. I loved the oldies then despite the bombardment of modern pop music at the time. For some reason, it was popular to dress up in rockabilly 50's greaser clothes in my high school. This song reminds me of driving at night to the beach as I went to my job - baby sitting a little girl! Long live the oldies
As they say the last GOOD music that was POPULAR music was the music from the late 50's to the early 70's, particularly the "Love Songs" of the late 50's early 60's, then the protest music (really all the folk music).
I like low tech rock n roll/Pop, not the stuff RyZombie mentions, even though it's better than music of the last 20 years. I hate that sterile New Garbage of the 1980's done by those English queer bands....Heavy Metal geeks who look like women. Overproduced stuff. You want real sounding music, listen to this stuff, Rockabilly and the 60's Garage scene plus others genres.
@Calaffe1987 that's a load of crap. Music from the 80's, 90's and 00's is still great, just got to find it. 80's: Van Halen, The Police, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Guns N Roses, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Depeche Mode, Tears for Fears, Kate Bush, Def Leppard, AC/DC, U2, Ozzy, Dio. 90's: Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Rage Against the Machine, Marilyn Manson, Radiohead, etc 00's: White Stripes, Eisley, Dimmu Borgir, etc. Tons of stuff
Went to Washington D.C. in 1961 with the annual elementary school patrol trip of the old days. On the big boat they took us kids on down the Potomac, everybody kept playing Runaway on the jukebox, over and over and over again. Of all the things that happened there, that's the most exciting thing I recall about the trip, the only thing worth remembering about D.C.
One of my favorites from that era ! I still remember when little Connie ran away cause I would not give her my heart ! I had to go find her and bring her back home, She didn't understand ! Ha ha ha She was only 13 years old and I was 18 . This song had just come out and I just had to give in, She was underage and overdeveloped and she lived right next door , The Kid was a Goddess so what could I do ?! She Won !! But we kept it secret .
@Calaffe1987 Not all music is horrible now-a-days,,, But I have to agree its horrible in the sense in 30/40 years time no one is gonna look back at this music and say "thats a classic" ,,, All the classics are 50's - 80's ... Just shows i've been brought up well, 17 years old and prefer the 50's - 80's :)
My wife loves this song so when i asked her to marry me I sang her this song and lets say I do not think that we will cut loose like most younger couples do.

It should be required listening. I love this song. So much so that I foist my love of Del Shannon on my friends who are also in their twenties.
