It's sad that some people think that Jaleel is "nothing special." You guys are listening for the wrong thing.... They're are only like two altoists I'm willing to listen to right now. Miguel Zenon and Jaleel Shaw.....
@coppens listen to his original compositions, better yet, get your hands and ears on that Perspective album. Hopefully that will get you hip to a new perspective.
@BrianMBrody-Oh jazz is definitely not dead, and it never will be. And you call Jaleel Shaw a young lion, call my high school jazz band cubs. Most of consist of juniors and seniors, there's only 5 sophomores, and 3 freshmen (I'm one of the fresmen). Well I'm just pointing out that there's a coming new age for jazz. 'cause about two weeks ago, my jazz band performed in Birdland in New York. We were guest conducted by Bobby Sanabria and we are the first high school to ever play there.
Simply brilliant...Jaleel has such a wonderful balance of tradition and creative modernism in his playing...Impeccable time feel, flexible rhythmic ideas..Plus he grooves his ASS off.

Well then its not jazz.

@Soppsau ...what is it? You know what "conducted" was a bad word to use, umm...Bobby Sanabria (look him up) was our jazz mentor. It's jazz.
