@DA90027 Actually, it was a combination of on-set disputes with Bette Davis and an alleged illness that eventually forced her role to be recast with Olivia DeHaviliand. Trivia note: the scene that has Miriam arriving at the Hollis mansion in a taxi does actually contain Joan Crawford in it. Director Richard Aldrich used the shot because filming was already behind schedule and he felt that the audience wouldn't know it was her due to the camera's distance from the taxi. :)
Thanks for adding this! Just saw the film for the first time on TCM and now I always look up films like this on YouTube for old trailers or documentaries like this one.
William Castle was the king of "schlock horror" films. The film was really cheesy, but Joan rose above the awful plot and turned in a great performance.
Umm... Joan Crawford looked anything but "haggard" in Strait-Jacket, Don Glut. No more than Jimmy Stewart or any of the men. And the genre is officially called "The Grande Dame Guignol," not hag films. Jerk.
@SueSnell - Glut didn't say Crawford looked "haggard" in Strait-Jacket ... he was referring to the former leading ladies (like Crawford and Davis) who had gotten old and haggard. Before Crawford's character got her make-over ... she definitely looked haggard!
@mkrobinson95 - I still disagree. I don't think she looked haggard when she wasn't made up. Crawford kept her looks and body far longer than most with tireless effort. I'm not some big Crawford fan, but I take issue with this type of cliche, especially when a male acter her age would be called "distinguished." She was 59 and looks great.
Diane Baker looks breathtakingly beautifu in Strait-Jacket and still looks wonderful in this video. The public gets mad when stars age, but aging is natural. THANK YOU ANNAVISSIFAN FOR POSTING THIS GREAT VIDEO!
I love it...thanks for posting. Diane Baker said that Joan was always tanked up and wanted the set freezing due to her being hot from all the booze she put in her Pepsi bottles.

Yes I can't believe Joan went from great films like "Baby Jane" then ditched "Hush Hush Sweet CHarlotte" for this campfest.
