Cobham was my second favorite jazz/rock fusion drummer behind Tony Williams. He also was killer on the skins. This is a tight cut and I got to give props to Randy Brecker's work on the trumpet.
Kudos to Sir Cobham for keeping the spirit alive after so many eons...Having met and seen him perform live, he remains a source of neverending inspiration to me and my fledgling drumming skills.. Jazz is Dead was an interesting venture. Saw them when they came to Atlanta, GA a few years ago.

good observation, i didn't notice that before, could be the sound guy tweaking on the fly, but it sounds intentional because the delay/reverb fades in, I think it's applied to the entire kit, you clearly echo on the bass drum also; effects could have been done post?
@Jadyellow8 I believe what you hear first is the "open air mic" recording the room, and the reason the sound of the drums change is because this recording crossfades between the room mic and the mixer.
As for Cobham being in the pocket..Yes and No.There's a certain pocket but also an obvious deviation from the tempo at times. Not exactly metronomic but still in the pocket if ya dig??
Thats sorta what being in the pocket is man, being able to say "Fuck you!" to the rythm and tempo with accents and fills but never sounding out of place. Gavin Harrison is a prime example as well.
Right, so you think he's not quite so good just because his solos doesn't match your amazingly-well-tuned ears? Or maybe because his solos won't last for forty-five-freaking-minutes, like some other guys do? Well, actualy, I don't give a shit for solos... If you think, a good soloist might not be a good drummer, or a good drummer might not be so good in solos, but that's beside the point. Can he hold a groove? HELL YEAH!
Hahhhaaaa, Carl Orr on geetar! I used to go see him play in Balmain, and at Strawberry Hills, and of course the Basement. Guess this clip is a few years old though now. Peter O'Meara (sp?) is another impressive Australian guitarist (as too is Steve McKenna.)
Jez2008UK - What a sad piece of comment here, huh... Chambers' quite amazing, that's for sure, but Cobham's a drum hero too. While Chambers' flashy, Cobham gets flashy (there's a difference here, huh?)... Just different styles and a sad comment of yours ;)
And the same goes for the guys talking about Peart... Genius, but different styles... Discussing it will take you nowhere near these giants, so stop complaining and start studying rudiments, you morons =D

And there lies the problem.....
"Study rudiments"
Billy Cobham is/was a rudiments technician on the drum kit.
He is not a musician first.
He is not 'tasteful'.
He is a 'oh I'll do this rudiment around the kit and grimace to make it look hard' - and suckers like you lap it up.
I too used to drool over BC's chops, his ability to switch grips, play ride with left one second, but his solos have always been very jerky stop/start because he simply does not have and never has had the stamina.
well said, Dr. Poon. drummers get all caught up on FLASHY SHIT and big hard rockin' bands... Billy plays with such grace and tastefulness... and he can do anything anyone else can do. He is beyond comparison. But can Neil Peart play like Billy? HELL NO. I'm sure Mr. Peart himself would acknowledge that...
What's b** shit is two people having a "my favourite drummer's better than your favourite drummer" style pissing match. I like both Chambers and Cobham...theyre both first class jazz percussionists...and there are others too.
I just think BC is hype. In fact the only reason a lot of you guys like him is maybe because you all are also not musician's, but are turned on by technique.
He may have technique, but all that grimacing doesn't hide from the fact that a) it does not fit the music he's trying to complement and b) it isn't really that hard what he's trying to do.
It doesn't work with me I'm afraid, works well on people who are easily fazed though (usually 10year olds).
Jez my friend, it's obvious that Billy Cobham doesn't "work for you"......why labour the point? If enjoying Cobhams music means being an easily fazed child then that's what I'll be.....better than being an up tight adult.
the cool thing if you have a good hearing, is that you can hear some strange sounds like monsters screams or laughs in all the piece. Probably the vibrations moved the e-pads, watta great billy- the best, my fav!
Cobham was my second favorite jazz/rock fusion drummer behind Tony Williams. He also was killer on the skins. This is a tight cut and I got to give props to Randy Brecker's work on the trumpet.

@Jadyellow8 i think its just an overall compressor that's still coping with the applause at the start

@Jadyellow8
What you're hearing is the soundboard operator running hi gain on the audience mic as the band starts and then slowly pulling it down.
