I had avoided using dried beans because I believed that the cost savings over buying canned literally went up in smoke (or steam) because of the long cooking time required. Now that my husband is out of work, I was looking at dried beans again and considered a pressure cooker. But, since I believe it is not healthy to cook in aluminum, I would have had to spend nearly $100 for a stainless one large enough to cook for our family with 4 teenagers . Thank you for sharing, and God bless you.
If you have the cash, you can buy a thermal pot which works on the same principle. Probably costs about $80-100 and you can leave it overnight to cook after boiling.
Thank you for your comment. You are right. I have seen those mentioned and looked at them on Amazon. What we have re-discovered, though, is that you don't need to spend that money for another appliance. You can boil food and then leave it in the well constructed cook box to cook overnight plus you can choose any size you want for the same price because you are making it yourself. After all, the idea for thermal pots came from time honored cook boxes! Leslie
That was really neat! I love to learn something new. I've recently begun grinding my own wheat and am looking for other ways to conserve money and resources. Thank you for this video!!!
Thank you fro your timely comment. My wife just finished an ebook today on the insulated box which we will be releasing soon so we were pleased for your timely comment.
Thank you for your question. This method is not acting like a pressure cooker and creating pressure in a different way. Rather it is acting like a crock pot and keeping food at a simmer for hours without additional energy input. Leslie
"Cheaper than dirt" sells big thick wool/felt disaster blankets. Wool is heat/fire resistant and would probably make a good liner. That way you don't have to worry about getting food all over your bedding.
Yes, we want to get one and be able to use it regularly. For now, though, we are just using what we have on hand. My wife has been talking about a solar cooker for some time now. It will be great to have a way to cook in the summer without using any heat in the house at all.
i would like to get one as well there are a few different ones. like a box one for like an oven and a parabolic dish one for pots. i found a good one online and they say it works better in winter. because of as they say the lower angle of incidence of the sun.
if you want the site i can send it to you. its in the USA.
i wounder if you could use an old small frigarator or ice chest to do the same thing with out the blankets

This is so smart. Why waste energy heating the kitchen? (Unless it's winter and you use electric heating anyway.) Thanks for posting.

I would think if it was pressurized, it would reduce cooking time using the hot box method.

This looks a little like it might be pressurized when wrapped up, quite like a pressure cooker?

Have you tried a solar cooker yet? This would be even more efficient in the spring/summer/fall.

i'm thinking of doing this but with styraphoam slabs wrappped in tin foil and a bunch of thick blankets as you've shown in this video.
very nice. Thanks
AnnieNM06 3 years ago
That will certainly work although you may find that you won't even need the Styrofoam or tin foil. Thanks for your comment.

Very cool. I have no doubt that would work with hay.

Yes, although I imagine I would use straw instead.
