This was an amazing example of the complex relationships between man and his desire for money and fame. The movie version reveals how Van Doren so desperately needed or wanted, his father's approval and love. Great clip.
I wish YouTube was available in the late 80's. I would have appreciated my weekends at the Van Doren home more had I known what had really happened. Although I greatly appreciated the wonderful writings and all I learned about them while there.
Judge Joseph Stone did most of the investigative work and many years later wrote a book about the quiz scandal. Richard Goodwin stole the credit and engaged in no small amount of historical revisionism (in my opinion).
Now that I've thoroughly read what both Herb Stempel and Charles Van Doren have said about the "fixed" aspects of the show, watching this video (and Parts 2 and 3) make it more than obvious that the "fix" was in and the contestants' mannerisms were dictated by the producers (as the contestants have both alleged).
The prize winnings seem very complicated on the show yet during the investigation Mr. Stempel explained that the most they were ever paid on the show was $60,000.
It's so funny. I was reading something about this and how Van Doren was the better looking one. The real Van Doren is creepy looking IMO and Stemple is better looking and have nice voice/mannerisms.
@giles422 Didn't you see the movie "Quiz Show" by Robert Redford? Stempel was told to act stressed. The entire thing is rigged, and if you saw the PBS special, the scandal involved more than just this show. The show's producers got thousands of people to lie before Congress. Patty Duke, a child, broke down and told the truth.
After seeing the film "Quiz Show", and after having researched the quiz show scandals of the 50s for college, I was ecstatic to finally see the real Van Doren and Stemple. I find it most interesting that Jack Barry constantly refers to Mr. Van Doren as "Mr. Van Doren", but calls Mr. Stemple "Herb".
@garytvfan "Jack Barry constantly refers to Mr. Van Doren as "Mr. Van Doren", but calls Mr. Stemple "Herb"."
I think that's to subtly communicate that Herb's been around for a while and Jack is familiar with him. I don't know, but I imagine as episodes went by, he probably got around to calling "Mr. Van Doren", "Charles". :)
I have this episode from a Shokus video purchase, and it seems as if the guys at Shokus resized the picture a bit because i couldn't see the tv buttons like I can here.
they both look like weasels

That was wrong.
Think over about continuing first and then go to commercial?
He should have let them think it over during the commercial.

It seems like it was in the scene in Quiz Show that they made him throw it.

You are right! Maybe Charlie is not as "elegant" as Mr. Van Doren jejeje!

@garytvfan -- I think this was Van Doren's
first episode where as Herb Stimple had been on the show for weeks, so maybe
Jack Barry felt more familiar with him &
called him Herb.
TIPTON340 2 years ago
Herb was the incumbent, Van Doren was the challenger. Thats why.
