One of my favorites of yours. And I laughed out loud no less than three times, haha. It's been a long time since I read Peter Pan, I should read it again.
Correction here: in the sentence "it's not just losing a fellow adventurer:" i forgot to put in the word "not." sorry for any cofusion i sometimes mentally skip words while writing. Anyways, love the videos you make, Your "Books vs. Movies" videos are very intelligent and engaging and provide great discussion about classic literature and the film adaptations based off of those works.
. . . As a result, all that jealousy towards Wendy now would be fruitless. I like this character growth of Tinkerbell, but you also see this sort of "broken heart" kind of feeling she gets when Peter leaves Neverland for good; to her it's just losing a fellow adventurer, but also a friend. it's one of the main reason why i like "Hook," it shows great characterization and growth amongst some of the main characters. Anyways that's my thought on your opinion of Julia Roberts as Tinkerbell.
@grmuir2007 That's a good point, and one I did actually consider, however, here's my conclusion. Neverland is a place where no one grows up, and nothing really changes. Peter never did, and neither did the lost boys. So why would Tinkerbell, of all entities, be the one being to exhibit growth? Yes, she was probably brokenhearted at Peter's leaving, but if she stayed in Neverland, she should have forgotten all about it. But after reading your comment, I can see it both ways.
. . . because of that she's "grown" out of that bitchy attitude. She's past that reason to act all mean and sometimes awful towards Wendy in the original story. Plus "Hook" takes place several years after the original adventure. When you see that Wendy's an old woman and that Peter is with someone else, logically it makes perfect sense for Tinkerbell now not to be jealous against Wendy for being affectionate with Peter afterwards; Wendy's grown out of that "love interest" with Peter . . .
This is my first time commentating on a youtube video (i'm not one who really engages in internet discussion); But here's my take on what you think of Julia Roberts as Tinkerbell in "Hook." I find her being nice and and not so jealous anymore about Wendy and Peter as a form character growth with age. this movie takes place about 30 years after the original story. As a result, many of the main characters like Peter, Wendy, Hook (maybe not much) have grown up; especially Tinkerbell . . .
Loved this review. You made me laugh over and over again.
Maybe it's primarily nostalgia, but I can't help loving Hook. When I read on iMDB that Spielberg was disappointed with the end result of this movie, it broke my heart a little.
@Luv2Dnce4 I love Hook as well. I imagine that Spielberg wanted something maybe a little grittier that explored Peter's psychological drama a little better, rather than typical kids movie at the end, but I still like it a lot.
i would argue against you with julia roberts in hook, remember its like 30 years later, she probably realised she had to change her ways, plus she is s till manipulative as she trys to get peter to forget about his wife and fall in love with her, so i would say julia roberts did a good job with a possible future version of tinlerbell
@Mrcool210 The only problem with that is that if Tinkerbell stayed in Neverland, where no one ever grows up and very little changes, she would have most likely forgotten about Peter, found someone else, and stayed exactly the same. (Like Peter did.) But I can kind of see it both ways.
Congratulations, Matt. You got me to sit through an over-30-minute video on YouTube, which is no small feat. Great review, and I love the interaction between all your personas. Such an odd couple...or trio, I guess...
The Scottish Reviewer is quite the fair-weather friend, isn't he?
In terms of Hook's Tinkerbell, I could not agree more, and it's kind of difficult for me to say that considering I'm a pretty big Julia Roberts fan. I think it was simply bad casting. Roberts is known for being America's sweetheart and as a result she didn't really gel with the bitchy, resentful aspects of the character. I LOVE Tinkerbell, and the Disney version's portrayal is far and away my favorite.
While the Disney version a childhood classic for me, I thought the 2003 version captured so much of the feeling that the play had and is probably my favourite adaptation. Please do a books Vs Movies of Stardust.
Another great review. I have always liked those Hooks better in the movies but maybe I was a sucker for the Actors who play them. In the movie Hook too it also felt like his kids were picking up on his forgetfull and low attention nature like that by having kids he gave his nature to the kids. In the end though I can see book winning cause it is fantastic.
@ThePlatypodes The Hook category was REALLY hard to decide, because I, too, like the movie Hooks quite a lot, especially how they're almost always played by the same person who plays Mr. Darling. And I really was impressed at how manipulative the movie Hooks could be comparison to the book character.
Interesting that you didn't mention Michael Jackson's obsession with Peter Pan and the idea of never growing up, because Michael was too busy working in the Jackson Five to actually be a child during his childhood!
Maybe it's not relevant, but did you catch Sci Fi's Neverland? It seems like since they did Tin Man, they're trying to do adult, sci fi versions of classic fairy tales o..o Not complaining, just observing.
Great review as always! ....kinda makes me wonder if Scottie will.. separate the way that Hatter has... then again, I'm still not sure how exactly that happened in the first place...
...I had no idea Captain Hook was a train ^..^ *shuffles back to cubby hole*
@MsMoonHere I didn't, though I have seen Tin Man, as well as their adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, and would be interested in completing the trilogy of famous children's stories from that time period.
I was thinking recently that books were the only medium that allows you to see, or at least glimpse, what it's like to be a different person (or at least inside their heads).
I then discussed this with my sister, and she raised some interesting points, so I was wondering what you'd say to this and whether you think any other medium can do this, or even tries to do this?
@SormaNo4 I don't think I agree with this, but I can understand the though process. I think it's easiest for books to do this, but movies and other forms of media can do it effectively as well. Actually, I might make a StoryTalk video about this topic. Stay tuned. =)
Ok I havent watched yet, but I think movie should win mainly because all 3 of the adaptations (Hook, Cartoon Peter Pan, 2003 Peter Pan) are all freaking fantastic and I love them all lol 3 against 1 :P

I'm not going to lie, I think this is one of my favorites yet. Aside from the fact that Peter Pan is one of my favorite plays/books the entire portion about Peter Pan as a character is almost word for word a discussion I once had with a co-worker while working at Epcot in Disneyworld, brought on by a pirate ship topiary being right outside my post and Peter Pan's music playing non-stop. ...this might make me a little biased about this episode being my favorite but, meh, thats ok. :)
