Hi Clarebannerman, This is great craic! I met you at O'Donoghue's last week at the Wednesday night session. You asked me to comment so here I am. You do have a lot of videos!
It brings out the Irish banshee and druid in me, elemental rhythms, earthy, tribal. Fabulous musicians playing with great spirit. And then theres the beer.
The best Irish Group in the world. I have been privileged enough to see them in concert twice. The first time the flutist played masons apron and only the flute. There was a drum beat, but no one was playing the bodhran so what was it. A few seconds later I discovered it was 3800 people tapping there foot in unison, To this day I get chills just thinking about it. Long live the Chieftains and the wonderful land there from!
I love listening to The Chieftains! Absolutely fantastic music! Look at Paddy's wonderful smile! Don't they all look fine! What joy! Thanks, Michael. Earlier comments say the first reel is "Fred Finn's;" the second, "Castle Kelly;" and the third, "The Red-Haired Lass." Is that right?
I saw online at the pub website that there was free admission to the Saint Patrick's Day festivities. Made me GREEN with envy of those able to attend.
Thanks for this. In my opinion, the beauty of most of this videos is seeing how the players smile and joy with the music. That´s the real spirit of this music in the first place.
I have the cd water from the well and this is one of favorites from it. the Chieftains are coming to my town next year, I hope to get tickets to see them. thanks for posting this
Paddy, Matt, Sean and some others look like they are enjoying themselves but some look like they are at work... The Chieftains best album ever and I have them all (I think...)
I have had the pleasure of seeing them live and drinking pints with them all after a concert back stage here in CA. Great evening, great music and genuine good lads. Sadly, Derek Bell has passed.
'The authorities should play this music in morgues to determine whether 'the stiff' is really a goner.' SO SO VERY TRUE...lol. how can ye NOT tap and clap? well if you were tied up i suppose, otherwise...THANKS to DR.
The authorities should play this music in morgues to determine whether 'the stiff' is really a goner. If the feet don't start tapping and the fingers don't start popping then the stiff is definitely brain dead and cerainly deceased. That's my contribution to medical science, folks.
"Amongst the musicians is the Rev.Gary Hastings from Belfast".
... And lets not forget Cora Smyth, (from Co. Mayo) there in the corner. She's won All Ireland Fiddle Champion quite a few times!
I love playing this music, I love listening to this music and I love seeing the these masters draw such magic from wood, metal and a bit of horse hair.
This is my poob in Ireland. My mother live in Westport and it's a great treat every year or so to have some great craic in this very room. Make me smile and very happy.
why? just because you are a typical yankee loser who has no life and hopefully will find your ancestors are from ireland which would make you a human being and not a yankee piece of shit
Typical american fucking moron. Your country is full of spineless fat wankers, im proud to be irish like every man woman and child in this great land, a country stepped in tradition, culture and charm! America is full of mcdonalds and fucking muppets like you. Now go back to your bucket of chicken, you un-educated dickhead!!
Sad how one rotten person gives the USA a bad name. I've been to no less than 3 Chieftains concerts here in the States and every time they have been filled above capacity. There are many here who remember and honor their ancestry.
I just don't want one internet troll to make it sound like the US in ungrateful.
WTF is *your* problem. As a second-generation Swedish-American, I know enough about the history of the US that the Irish have largely made this country what it is today, perhaps more than any other ethnic group. You are, sir, a maroon!
I'm from France and I went to Ireland last summer. I spent a night in this pub and that was absolutely wonderful. Thx for sharing it brings me back really good memories of pints and music. I can't wait to see this country again !!!
absolutly agree, i'm from spain and i miss this kind of music, so natural with feeling passion and good taste today's musician's are so fake... and those guys here you have, 40 years and still in a very good shape, (except derek bell....)
This is a fantastic pub - Matt Molloy's (he is playing the flute, seated beside Paddy Moloney). If you are anywhere Westport its well worth the visit. He does a great pint of plain.....
A lot of top class musicians here; from Kevin Coneff with bodhran to the right; Gary Hastings, flute; Matt Molloy, flute; Paddy Moloney, pipes; Cora Smyth, fiddle; Sean Keane, fiddle; John McHugh, fiddle; Peter Molloy (Matts son), flute; Martin Fay, fiddle. The flute player next to Derek Bell on harp is indeed Peter Horan. Don't recognise the female harpist neither the guitaris or the fiddler at the end.
you're absolutely right! I was probably still under the effect of last night guinness ;-) and they absolutely don't look like each other at all, i was really out of my mind :-p thanks for the video by the way clarebannerman!
Haha check it out there's a priest playing flute next to Matt
