I was 13 years old when I bought this album in 1978 using money I earned from my paper route in suburban NYC. Listening again to these songs takes me right back to those beautiful days...just before Reagan and his corporate fascists came in and turned this country into a nightmare...which continues to this day with wars, hatred, greed, corporate theft, and the loss of freedom.
Cruzin around in my 1971 VW Bug, with my 8 track player and alpine speakers, I had to put a book of matches under the 8 track to keep it from draging, but I became a huge Styx Fan, even met my wife at a concert and I still love the band. lol. These were they days before big corportate shows like American Idol and the theroy of mass producing the next big act! We did not have the option of making play list on our IPOD, we listened to the album in it;s entirety. Great Albus art work as well!
Great song...I wish Styx would play this song using either the Wanamaker pipe organ in Philadelphia, PA or The Midmer-Losh Boardwalk Pipe organ in Atlantic City, NJ for their organ part of this song! That would be so powerful!
StyxFan93 you are awesome!!!!!!!! The organ part of this song was recorded in summer of 78 at St. James Episcopal Cathedral in Chicago. I know because my dad was the Dean of the Cathedral then. Can't tell you how exciting it was to have them use the organ at St. James right before my family and I moved to San Diego! I was 8 years old that summer and still remember seeing those guys at the Cathedral right before the move, happy memories!!
This song has great meaning to me now more than when I bought this when it came out. Going through a divorce of 25 years of marriage. Thought for the longest it was me now beginning to see I'M OK !
If you have a young son, daughter, nephew, niece, cousin or a friend has a kid, buy them this CD and other albums like it and reach them before they get sucked into the no-talent B.S. BoyBand/Disney/MTV/HipHop machine.
Yeah! Real pipe organ and killer old school rock music! That 70's "take no prisoners" approach to music. Man how I miss that! Love it to death! The 80s with "style over substance" killed the '70s for good. Today it's "models" singing and computer hackjob/patchwork as background noise. Guess I'm really getting old........
This was the last of the golden era of Styx before they changed their sound from a heavy rock band to a soft rock band and sadly Foreigner and Journey later went on the same road
@jityr2 Front left is James Young, Front right is Chuck Panozzo, behind him is Dennis DeYoung, then Tommy Shaw, then all the way in the back is John Panozzo
I was just curious to if anyone went to any of the recent Styx shows. Reason for asking is I know that their recent tour they played all the GI and POE songs, and undoubtingly this one. I was wondering how the pipeorgan sounded live. I wonder if Lawrenece and JY did like a 'duet" in that version of the song.
@vanhouten64 When I was a kid I used to sit up in the church choir loft since my mom was the organist. The organ was an electronic tracker pipe organ (desperately needed to be refurbished/replaced, but I didn't know). Listening to the organ in this song, especially the low pedal notes, I can just imagine the sound of the switches pop open and shut and the sound of the wind rushing through the pipework. Amazing instrument, amazing song here.
I believe I have discovered the reason, "Mr. Roboto," was penned. Although seemingly unbeknownst to Styx at the time, Roboto would go on to have significant impact on the moral landscape of society many years into the future.
Please see, "Domo Arigato Douchebag" here on YT for a clear understanding of what I'm talking about.
I LOVE the intro, the Panozzo brothers made such a great rythm section. Does anyone have a clue if Chuck uses a distortian pedal for the bass in this track?
There's been some questions about the opening of this song. Some people think the band is saying, "Sit on and rotate" or something like that. According to my sources, they actually say, " Eight, skate, seven on a rotate." There's also a question as to what this means. I'm not sure, but I believe it means a coordination in music, for example, "Give me a seven on the rotate." Something like that probably. If I can find out what it means, I'll post it for everyone. STYX RULES!!
I agree ,I saw Styx Monday Oct 25,2010. They were great ,it was the Grand illusion,Pieces of Eight tour.Gowan is a great musician and seeing Styx on tour with him is better than nothing but I wish DDY ans Styx were still creating music and not touring off the past.
@tjrtherocksponge Not if your like in your 50,s and I just firgured it out.Add the visuals and words like 'VARMIT" and now I get it , your Elmer Fudd. How did I miss that? Now say a prayer for your hair follicles or get a wig. Halloween suggestion: get a wig and go as a dude with hair, even go as Jesus
I used to spin "Pieces of Eight" until it was in pieces back in '79 and '80! I love this record, one of my all-time favorite songs and albums. Styx was at the top of their game with this release. Great and very important band in American rock history!
@tjrtherocksponge Again your language....tisk tisk tisk! Calm down and and take a deep breath. Oh and just because someone lives in Canada does not mean they exclusively listen to Canadian singers, even you should be smart enough to comprehend this, and really you should calm down!

This is one of the most unique songs in rock because of its best part, Dennis' pipe organ solo. You just don't hear instruments like the pipe organ in rock songs anymore, and I think that's a shame. It really adds musical flavor to the song. It's one of the things that made Styx such a unique and great band.
Pieces of Eight and Grand Illusion were the two albums which I think defined Styx at it's best time- Cornerstone was okay, and Paradise Theatre had some great songs, but looking back now I can see how they had already started to "lose themselves" and the style that made them unique. Love the collection you have put out here- thanks on behalf of Styx fans everywhere!
FYI: Dennis DeYoung recorded the organ solo in this song(as well as Bach's "Little Fugue In G" on "STYX II") on the massive pipe organ in Saint James Cathedral in Chicago, IL.
Thanks for posting. I used to listen to this song when I was a kid and I have been looking for this song for years, but could never remember who the group was. How could I have forgotten that it was Styx!
In my opinion, "Pieces of Eight", while not their highest acclaimed album, was the pinnacle of their achievements, the point where the band peaked artistically and commercially. While there was a multitude of great recordings both before and after, this album captured the perfect blend of raw art, edged guitar, keyboards, synthesizer, and yes, one massively impressive pipe organ.
@mommakat226: Me too...gave up my Styx loyalty when DDY wasn't part of it (but have seen his solo concerts 2x). Can't imagine anyone else singing his signature tunes (esp the vintage ones...)
I believe the organ solo was recorded at the St. James Cathedral in Chicago. They were making incredible music in those days. It just doesn't get any better!
The last of the really really good styx albums...They went downhill after they lost their prog-edge. They were good after this don't get me wrong, but I think they went too mainstream
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII'm alright, I'm feeling good about myself and that's for suuuure! EVERYBODY SING NOW....
Styx was the poster child for the cliche "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts".
Their best stuff was always a mix of keyboard + rock guitar, like this song, or the keyboard hook on guitar-driven "BCM" or the guitar riff on keyboard-driven "CSA".
For their solo efforts, you need to wipe the sap off listening to DDY and the blood from your ears listening to TS or JY.
Man I wish those three would re-light the creative fire. What music they created!
yeah, cool organ work. Reminds me of Rick Wakeman when he recorded "Going for the One". He came across a huge, beautifull church organ in Vevey, Switzerland and he recorded all the church organ tracks THROUGH THE PHONE!! with the rest of the guys in the studio. Swiss telephony is of such a great quality that he recorded that way with no loss in signal. Great keyboard work Dennis!
Very cool organ work on the solo. Unless my memory fails me, I think they recorded the solo in a famous church on a huge pipe organ. I really like the positive theme of this song.
Ah yes the 70's. Drugs, Sex and Rock n Roll. It's just one big blur...It'll all come back to me, anyway this is my favorite Styx album. They blew their wad on this one. Great keyboard, guitar, vocals....just a great production....and no ProTools or Cakewalk in sight. Just master musicains actually playing their instruments and making timeless sound waves.
It was pop and commercial all along... you, like me, only lament that you are no longer part of the targeted market. Hint... Blues never really changes.. lol..
But Dennis DeYoung went too pop-- starting with Mr. Roboto. I even liked Paradise Theatre, as commercial as it was... But not the Robot! "DANGER WILL ROBINSON!! DANGER!!
Absolutely, ol' Dennis DeYoung always had the "pop demon" lurking within his music. That's why James Young's influence was critical. Even though I liked most of it... I thought Tommy Shaw was a bit pop as well. Thanks for the comment and your opinion.
@recaulkulous After "Babe" they started to go downhill big time. Alot of infighting because Dennis wanted to keep going down that "Pop" road and James and Tommy wanted to have more of a heavy edge to their music. They wound up falling apart after the "Mr. Roboto" fiasco.
I have always loved this song but does it remind anyone, just a little, of Squonk by Genesis from around the same time ... I'm just sayin' ...
Still, I have loved the song since I was probably 11 when I first heard my older sister playing it. I didn't know who it was but figured it out around the age of 14 and was hence forth a big Styx fan.
truckinallday08 I was there at that concert!unless you are talking bout the last one with reo? I remember the fans busting down the fence and now they replaced it with a brick wall because of that styx concert.some dude also got thrown back by security for giving tommy shaw his beer
This is just raw song writing talent and instrument playing talent, how bout that organ solo it was recorded at a church in Chicago the bands hometown, except Mr Shaw he's from Alabama I think
I agree with you that Styx should have but DDY wanted to go Pop and that was the end. I think if they hired someone else instead of Tommy who was more of a Steve Howe Steve Hackett style guitar player Styx could have done more i think.
I agree. It seems like they just got the art of songwriting down when they started to go down. As soon as they started being great they stopped. I wish they could've gotten over their differences to continue writing together, because it is just not the same without them. And, not that I have anything against Gowan, but Styx is not anywhere near the real STYX without Dennis. Please don't be offended by this, because I don't dismiss Gowan as a musician, I just don't think Styx is Styx without DDY.
You are right SF93, they are not Styx with DDY. Let me also say, DDY's solo stuff is (sorry DDY fans) really awful. It's like he took "Babe" and "First Time" and made a career out of Barry Manilow type songs. Ugggghhh, I wish these guys would just get over their problems and do a real reunion. Styx without DDY and Styx without TS (Edge of the Century) really are just not that good. BTW, this song and Sing For the Day were the best 2 songs on Pieces of Eight (IMO).
@StyxFan93 I can't imagine anyone taking offense to that. Dennis DeYoung IS Styx much like Freddy Mercury IS Queen. Sometimes musicians take on the personality of both themselves and the whole without really recognizing or giving consent. It is simply who they are and what they're destined to be...and everyone had better hold on if they are to be a part. I think most are happy and grateful to have been a part...and others seem to think "this should have been me"...and so they try...and so they..
@StyxFan93 Here, here! Styx without Dennis is kind of like a Whopper without mayo on it. It is just not the same. Dennis was one of the original founding members. Without him, there probably wouldn't be a Styx at all!
@StyxFan93 when I saw them during the Grand Illusion/Peices of Eight tour, Gowan tried so hard to sound like DDY. His voice is just too different to do it, Gowan dosent have a bad voice, just a different one. And besides, he can really play some mean keyboards! Dennis will always be a key part in Styx, but styx today is not half bad!
This song really kicks ass, this is definitely Styx at their best, I wish Styx would've been able to focus more songs like this later in their career.
Does anyone know the name of the lady on the cover of pieces of eight album?,it always intrigued me...back in the 70's was impossible to get info, like now with the internet...i came up empty handed still...
God, this brought back a great memory. All my buddies and I were at the MN State Fair on the day that Styx was scheduled to perform that evening. About 2:30pm, as we walked past the Grandstand, the organ solo @ 3:12 starts to play. We and everyone around us, just froze in our tracks to listen. Of course, when the organ solo was over... Everyone, at the top of our lungs started singing, "I'M OK! I finally found the person I've been searching for!" It was like a choir of 1500 people! What fun!!
Definitely one of the better undiscovered Styx tracks. They should copy Rush and do their own "B-side" tour. They have the material and I would love to hear something like this live.

Dennis was a big element behind Styx.....just like other band.
IE: Jethro Tull: Ian Anderson, Genesis: Peter Gabriel, King Crimson: Robert Fripp,
Fleetwood Mac: Stevie Nicks etc....!!!!!

Thanks for posting. I used to listen to this song when I was a kid and I have been looking for this song for years, but could never remember who the group was. How could I have forgotten that it was Styx!

STYX....!!!! One of the fucking GREATEST bands EVER.....
bluebell2423 1 year ago
In my opinion, "Pieces of Eight", while not their highest acclaimed album, was the pinnacle of their achievements, the point where the band peaked artistically and commercially. While there was a multitude of great recordings both before and after, this album captured the perfect blend of raw art, edged guitar, keyboards, synthesizer, and yes, one massively impressive pipe organ.

I totally agree I walked out on a styx cause dennis was not a part of it
mommakat226 1 year ago
@mommakat226: Me too...gave up my Styx loyalty when DDY wasn't part of it (but have seen his solo concerts 2x). Can't imagine anyone else singing his signature tunes (esp the vintage ones...)

I believe the organ solo was recorded at the St. James Cathedral in Chicago. They were making incredible music in those days. It just doesn't get any better!

The last of the really really good styx albums...They went downhill after they lost their prog-edge. They were good after this don't get me wrong, but I think they went too mainstream

Great keyboard work Dennis!
alcatras4 2 years ago
They make it in a church near Chicago .
I mean the recording of the organ.......
pewploid 2 years ago
Very cool organ work on the solo. Unless my memory fails me, I think they recorded the solo in a famous church on a huge pipe organ. I really like the positive theme of this song.

Ah yes the 70's. Drugs, Sex and Rock n Roll. It's just one big blur...It'll all come back to me, anyway this is my favorite Styx album. They blew their wad on this one. Great keyboard, guitar, vocals....just a great production....and no ProTools or Cakewalk in sight. Just master musicains actually playing their instruments and making timeless sound waves.
alcatras4 2 years ago 2
hey hey hey hey
eight, skate, 7 on the rotate
yeah, but what does it mean? It couldn't have meant the group - there was only 5 in it, lol!!!
(maybe they were talking about their "roadies", lol!!!
anyway, again, thx for putting these old styx songs on!!!

They're talking about either drugs or music. What else would anyone be talking about in the 70s? Or in that case any decade?

It was pop and commercial all along... you, like me, only lament that you are no longer part of the targeted market. Hint... Blues never really changes.. lol..
FirstLandingOnMedusa 2 years ago
Then his solo stuff did nothing for me at all... Just my opinion, I'm sure others will diiffer. An amazing talent at any rate.
recaulkulous 2 years ago
But Dennis DeYoung went too pop-- starting with Mr. Roboto. I even liked Paradise Theatre, as commercial as it was... But not the Robot! "DANGER WILL ROBINSON!! DANGER!!
recaulkulous 2 years ago
I thought Dennis Deyoung went overly pop starting with "Babe", that was when Styx started to go overly commercial IMO
Doobie1975 2 years ago
Absolutely, ol' Dennis DeYoung always had the "pop demon" lurking within his music. That's why James Young's influence was critical. Even though I liked most of it... I thought Tommy Shaw was a bit pop as well. Thanks for the comment and your opinion.
recaulkulous 2 years ago
@recaulkulous After "Babe" they started to go downhill big time. Alot of infighting because Dennis wanted to keep going down that "Pop" road and James and Tommy wanted to have more of a heavy edge to their music. They wound up falling apart after the "Mr. Roboto" fiasco.

I have always loved this song but does it remind anyone, just a little, of Squonk by Genesis from around the same time ... I'm just sayin' ...
Still, I have loved the song since I was probably 11 when I first heard my older sister playing it. I didn't know who it was but figured it out around the age of 14 and was hence forth a big Styx fan.
piacerre888 2 years ago
truckinallday08 I was there at that concert!unless you are talking bout the last one with reo? I remember the fans busting down the fence and now they replaced it with a brick wall because of that styx concert.some dude also got thrown back by security for giving tommy shaw his beer
mommakat226 2 years ago
This is just raw song writing talent and instrument playing talent, how bout that organ solo it was recorded at a church in Chicago the bands hometown, except Mr Shaw he's from Alabama I think

This is definitely Styx at the top of their peak, wish they would've done more songs like this.
Doobie1975 2 years ago
I agree with you that Styx should have but DDY wanted to go Pop and that was the end. I think if they hired someone else instead of Tommy who was more of a Steve Howe Steve Hackett style guitar player Styx could have done more i think.

Dennis: Get your head outa your ass. I wanna see you guys again. Sux w/out you.
maxx0xxam 2 years ago
StyxFan93 2 years ago 9
You are right SF93, they are not Styx with DDY. Let me also say, DDY's solo stuff is (sorry DDY fans) really awful. It's like he took "Babe" and "First Time" and made a career out of Barry Manilow type songs. Ugggghhh, I wish these guys would just get over their problems and do a real reunion. Styx without DDY and Styx without TS (Edge of the Century) really are just not that good. BTW, this song and Sing For the Day were the best 2 songs on Pieces of Eight (IMO).
heymrbluesman 2 years ago

Without him, there probably wouldn't be a Styx at all!
smalltownman73 1 year ago
@StyxFan93 when I saw them during the Grand Illusion/Peices of Eight tour, Gowan tried so hard to sound like DDY. His voice is just too different to do it, Gowan dosent have a bad voice, just a different one. And besides, he can really play some mean keyboards! Dennis will always be a key part in Styx, but styx today is not half bad!
fraroc 1 year ago
This song really kicks ass, this is definitely Styx at their best, I wish Styx would've been able to focus more songs like this later in their career.
Doobie1975 2 years ago

What fun!!
truckinallday08 2 years ago
Definitely one of the better undiscovered Styx tracks. They should copy Rush and do their own "B-side" tour. They have the material and I would love to hear something like this live.
