I'd say peds give stability, and pegless gives maneuverability. Which one you go for depends on the roads you'll be riding, and the speeds you'll be going.
Absolutely awesome, I love the winter or early spring setting. I watch this video everytime I'm feeling down and it picks me back up. This vid captures the nature of what can be done when humans put their minds to it. I mean this is cool because there is no rocket science behind it, just simple engineering yet imagine if ancient people had smooth downhill roads and a STREET LUGE!!
I know there was a race in Anstead, WV awhile back and there are lugers that make runs in WV, but I haven't personally had the chance to. If the Oklahoma border isn't too far for you, we'll all be riding the Talimena scenic drive near Mena, AR this weekend. Now those are some good roads!
a new design in luge boards is soon going to be available from a company called Nuclear Street Luge, the web address should be up soon, so Google it sometime soon.
This is the best street luge video ive seen online all up so far....The smooth, great speed this guys traveling at throughtout the whole video.....its very extreem but also relaxing. It's just like the music film clip (Forever Young- by the band Youth Group) The music this guys chosen is perfect to relate to, maken me feel like im there myself, flying through the air with him.
I bet this song "Superman" or what ever it is would have been even more popular if this was the video they used for it
was the road closed? looks like winter and no cars so I'm guessing yes. I've driven there and rode my motorcycle and its very pretty, though not so much whenever you rode it. speed limit is only 35.. I'd be afriad to hit a deer or something there going 60 mph. doesn't look like youre going too fast anyway.
And what kind of board is that cause it looks SWEET but i cant find it anywhere (at least with prices) and where do you get the leather suits like that?
It's a pegless alumninum board made of 1/4" T6aluminum. You can make one for about 200 bucks with a jigsaw, drillpress and pressbrake, or you can build a high quality "woodie". Ebay has some leathers for cheap. Buy a DOT-approved helmet. It will save your noggin.
I was doing somewhere between 55 and 65 MPH most of the run... I don't know for sure because I don't have a GPS. Some riders have gotten to 80+ on suitable roads.
I built one for about 300 bucks. You can buy better-built (e.g., Rogers Bros.) for about 800-900 without trucks and wheels. Memorial Day fun run in Talimena, OK if you want to check it out.
this is my favourite luge video ive seen so far. the music you've chosen brings my feelings into the video, just making me want to be there myself.
I've heared this song dozens of times but just like the Youth Group song(Forever Young)once i see the video i just love the song a hell of a lot more. lets see if you can come up with another one as good as the first :)
I noticed you said in the video you borrowed the board. Is it just guts that's needed to take on speedeedy turns like this, you just borrtow the board every now and again for fun? or is luging at this speed something that requieres a great deal of practice and time and you only needed to borrow the board after fucking your own board up in recent practice.
With the music you've chosen im guessing you went out on that run for more of a feeling of escape. Youre not just some plain adrenalin junkie but someone that come up with this idear to express themselves and feel free.
Very nice video! Nice run too! I would like to luge that if I make my way near there. Having to much fun taking the luge down mountain passes. Check it out sometime! Nice work....
Dude, I grew up in Colorado...my fam just moved back to the Springs. Maybe I'll hit you up next time I'm out there visiting. Absolutely SICK roads out there with CRAZY grades for miles!!!!!
I would love to ride with someone new. You really need to checkout Loveland Pass along with many of the other Passes out there. Never been ridding near the springs so if you head back hit me up! Found a new one in August, hit 82MPH on the GPS, SugarLoaf road in Boulder County
Yeah this was (is) the north front royal run. We started from the visitors center to just before the gate. You can probably bomb it once, maybe twice without running into trouble, but don't press your luck like we did. The guy said a gravity bike would be fine as long as it had working brakes. I live in Memphis now, but next time I'm out near Roanoke or WV I'll give you a hollar.
The Human spirit!! How it attains such aspirations! A guy took a pair of special ski's with th eedges sharpened to razor thin and he was dropped off on top of the Alps and skied down what normally would have been impossible. An army struggled to cross the Alps but a single guy with no rrom for the word CAN'T....did.
wow, that's AWSOME!!!!!! Greatest run i've seen on youtube, lol. I live by skyline drive, I am planning on speedboarding down there. The section you went on seemed to be fairly straight, last time i was up there it was really curvy, but it's a long road, lol. What part were you on, near the entrance or up top by where the campgrounds are? And you said if you got caught, it's a 75$ fine, but, how can you get caught? theres not much patrol there or anyway of enforcing their rules.
this shit kicks ass. I did this when i was 13 with a friend on an old school style skate board. damn it was fast lol.. we melted the front left wheel becuase this corner we went around was really tight and we had been at it for a few hours and the damn thing was so hot it started to mealt it then it locked up and flat spotted it.
thanks for making this. I haven't streetluged in like four years. It's an unbelievable sport. There's nothing like going 65 mph 2 inches off the ground, using nothing but gravity. Ever luged Dinosaur Pt. Road in California?
Nice riding. Great road! I used to do this a few years back, never had a road that long to really cruise for that long. I did get up to 50-55 mph, I really miss that rush being so close to the ground. Nice vid!
i love street luge, i just need a stupid place to do it! i live in florida and i got my first ride visiting family in another state.i got to do it about 5 times going about 30+. i was too scared to go faster :). but now i want to go faster but cant do it.
WOW! very nice run. very very nice! What state is this? And did you use a regular video camera as your headcam? Because the quility is great.(and it looked like one in your shadow at the end)
Thanks...Glad you enjoyed it. It's a nice cruising road in Front Royal, VA (not very technical), but really pretty in the fall. If you get caught luging in this national forest, it's a 75 dollar fine, so don't get caught. The camcorder is a 1080i high def camcorder with wide angle lens attached to my helmet using simple attachment means.
Man... I did'nt think you would ever pass a car for a while there. Nice traffic for a good luge road... looks like a fun run too, 55mph+ in the lower sections, yeah?

Luges are lean-steer. You just shift your body weight. It's basically a long aluminum and steel skateboard.

Hi,
I am in Danville Va it is just 80 miles from me to the blue ridge parkway lots of hills.
Great video, do you get speed wobble and at what speed.
I was told as long as you use different trucks you will not get speed wobble.
As like one truck tracker and one truck gullwing.
Is this true at all.
I bet your wheels got warm on this run, 60 mph is pretty fast lol.

this must be at the north end.
check it:
13 mile descent off apple orchard mtn at
parkway milepost 78 a bit curvy but 90% doable - also good from mp 105ish to route 460 toward roanoke.
4 mile 9% straightaway in the middle of scenic 150 in pocahontas co WV.
And a 85 mph screaming chute on route 803 in rockbridge county, VA.
that'll get you started - many more secrets :)
