@Instantextra it's not inferior Daryl & John are paying tribute to their roots they also covered the Stylistics You Are Everything which Daryl actually sings back up on the original record 33 years earlier
There really was no point in remaking a song that was already perfect. Do we really need an inferior version? I'm sure it feels good to cover such a great song, though. I don't blame 'em. Maybe this will lead more people to the Five Stairsteps.
WTF dude? It wasn't me who brought race into this, it was you. When I say "vanilla," I am referring to the rather bland, dumbed-down presentation of the song. In comparison to the emotionally-infused delivery by the Steps, H&O pale. And I am an H&O fan, but this isn't their best work. Leave your race sensitivity at home. I'm white and my band does this song, I don't think that has anything to do with race

Hall and Oates has been one of my favorite groups. They have a way of giving you that "feel good" sensation. But i have never felt like telling mom anything like that.
You must have one hell of a stereo to pick up those vibes. Thanks for your input. I will never be able to listen to this song again in the same way! I love you man!
On the five stair steps version to me it sounds like a love song yet this version sounds to me like a father who hasn't seen his kid and is trying to make a connection again
I love this song. It was the perfect song for my son when he was eight and a terrible thing happen to him. I told him thing would get better in life for him and boy am I proud of the man he became today, I LOVE YOU JOEY MOM XOXO ever time I hear this song I think of him.
@Ron0968, I feel the same way. These fellows do it well, but how can anyone ever beat the original classic? It only makes sense that anyone would make the comparison.
I totally agree with you!! Valerie Carter's version is the best because she has a very beautiful gripping soulful voice. Her version always reminds me of the final scene of Over The Edge. One of my all time favourite movies.
The Song was Written by Stan Vincent for the Five Stairsteps. An example of a Hall & Oates song that was popularized by another Musician would be Everytime you go Away. Which they originally wrote in 1980 for their album Voices, although the song did not reach prominence until Paul Young covered it in 1985.
This song was written by one of the members of the band BREAD. And the five stairsteps covered it. It was written in the mid 60s. Is there someone in that group with the last name GATES?
@Tauxedo Didn't come to prominence"? I guess you weren't around to know just how awesome this song was in 1972. One of the best to come out of that memorable year. Just sayin'.
Jenny, I think you need to research. Hall and Oates did NOT write this. They only covered it. Five Stairsteps wrote it and it's their signature song and many people have covered it including H&O. They were performing it in 1970.
@lazer59882 Yes, that iks John Oates singing lead, he takes the part at the beginning and they trade off all through the song. John sings lead on a lot of songs on their CDs just not on a lot of singles. Two that I am sure you have heard are She's Gone, one of their biggest hits, and the remake of You've Lost that Loving Feeling. I am surprised that you haven't heard those songs with John on lead or you didn't notice it was him.
@kenndogg51 Hey everyone, thanks for all your support. It has been 2 years since I have officially come out of the closet and told my parents, "Mom, dad, I'm gay." and I haven't looked back since!

i totally agree, doesnt even touch the original. but i guess they used open up for the band that originally sang this, the five stairsteps, and they kinda sang it out of respect for the band they used to open for.
*Wow* what a versatile song. I REALLY like the Five Starsteps, but I have to say Beth Orton and Hall & Oats both add a great deal to the song.. Thanks for posting!
Maybe Hall got bored with the fact that there are only 2 verses repeated over and decided to re-write this classic. Bad decision. This is one time when I liked Oats better.
