  • the original might be "better" but this is done with respect and love.

  • @Instantextra it's not inferior Daryl & John are paying tribute to their roots they also covered the Stylistics You Are Everything which Daryl actually sings back up on the original record 33 years earlier

  • There really was no point in remaking a song that was already perfect. Do we really need an inferior version? I'm sure it feels good to cover such a great song, though. I don't blame 'em. Maybe this will lead more people to the Five Stairsteps.

  • I liked this song on Bridge To Terabithia it was good when the teacher sang it.

  • @controversyking WTF dude? It wasn't me who brought race into this, it was you. When I say "vanilla," I am referring to the rather bland, dumbed-down presentation of the song. In comparison to the emotionally-infused delivery by the Steps, H&O pale. And I am an H&O fan, but this isn't their best work. Leave your race sensitivity at home. I'm white and my band does this song, I don't think that has anything to do with race

  • @controversyking Dear God, It wasn't me who brought race into this, it was you. When I say "vanilla," I am referring to the rather bland, dumbed-down presentation of the song. • @controversyking

That's a good movie. I totally forgot about it I gotta buy it now. LOL

  • This is absolutely the better version ♥

  • Happy Friday All......!

  • Great version along with 5 stairstep

  • The drum part is much better in the Stairsteps recording. Love H & O, but very vanilla in comparison to the original...

  • Hall and Oates are too black for their own good.

  • @elementz1986 hilarious!

  • Hall and Oates has been one of my favorite groups. They have a way of giving you that "feel good" sensation. But i have never felt like telling mom anything like that.

You must have one hell of a stereo to pick up those vibes. Thanks for your input. I will never be able to listen to this song again in the same way! I love you man!

  • On the five stair steps version to me it sounds like a love song yet this version sounds to me like a father who hasn't seen his kid and is trying to make a connection again

  • I love this version best...healing, as well as amazing!

  • This song makes me smile....Love It...their version is simply amazing...no one sings it any better than this!!! :)

  • I like that they did a tribute, but Valerie Carter did a much better song, look her up on YT and listen for yourself:)

  • What a great version and who better to do it

  • I must say, having grown up with this song I must say that this version is nice and tasty. I like the new lyrics as well. I enjoyed it.

    Worf

  • I am a fan of Hall and Oats but I think that The Five Stairsteps version of this song is better. But I still love you guys :)

  • Wow, this is really nice!

  • good cover :-) strong & tender.

  • I love this song. It was the perfect song for my son when he was eight and a terrible thing happen to him. I told him thing would get better in life for him and boy am I proud of the man he became today, I LOVE YOU JOEY MOM XOXO ever time I hear this song I think of him.

  • The original is better

  • I like the original better, but these guys sound pretty dang good!!! I like this version also...

  • @Ron0968, I feel the same way. These fellows do it well, but how can anyone ever beat the original classic? It only makes sense that anyone would make the comparison.

  • Good cover of a great song.

  • not the version i'm looking for but still great. maybe it's in the song. love it.

  • @1965rapunzel You should check out Richie Havens version. search Richie Havens, Ooh child. Awesome version.

  • Check out Valerie Carter's version of this. I think it's the best of all!

  • I totally agree with you!! Valerie Carter's version is the best because she has a very beautiful gripping soulful voice. Her version always reminds me of the final scene of Over The Edge. One of my all time favourite movies.

    ~Mr. Make Believe

  • I'll stick to the Stair Steps. Hall and Oats made the song to busy.

  • Keep ya head up

  • Great song! This version is so intimate.

    Love it!!

  • nice version, not as good as the original but still, FLAMES SUCK!!!!

  • this is my all time fave song...has helped me through some rough times...

  • Love this Song...Classic! Brilliant Post Tauxedo...Yeah!

  • The Song was Written by Stan Vincent for the Five Stairsteps. An example of a Hall & Oates song that was popularized by another Musician would be Everytime you go Away. Which they originally wrote in 1980 for their album Voices, although the song did not reach prominence until Paul Young covered it in 1985.

  • This song was written by one of the members of the band BREAD. And the five stairsteps covered it. It was written in the mid 60s. Is there someone in that group with the last name GATES?

  • @Tauxedo Could you get a little more convoluted?

  • @Tauxedo Are you kidding, This song was already popular in the far east during the late 70's by the Five Stairsteps.

  • @Tauxedo Didn't come to prominence"? I guess you weren't around to know just how awesome this song was in 1972. One of the best to come out of that memorable year. Just sayin'.

  • Jenny, I think you need to research. Hall and Oates did NOT write this. They only covered it. Five Stairsteps wrote it and it's their signature song and many people have covered it including H&O. They were performing it in 1970.

  • The Five Stairsteps definitely wrote it and sing the best version of it, which usually happens when a band writes the song.

  • five stairsteps

  • yeah watch the vid on soul train awards just type ooh child five stair steps

  • who made the original i fucking forgot somebody help me with this

  • The Five Stairsteps!

  • the five stair steps

    they are bother and sister

that is where they got their name

    from their mother

  • five stair steps, best version

  • hall & oates are sum bad white cats..

  • i love this song it makes me feel better when im sad ^-^ and its sweet in the move Boys n the hood

  • this song always makes me feel better

  • This is the song that made me come out of the closet and tell my parents, "Mom, dad, I'm gay."

  • @BullnBearAnalytics hahaha..

  • @BullnBearAnalytics get the heck outta here

  • @BullnBearAnalytics great.im happy for u

  • @BullnBearAnalytics power to you. jah bless!

  • @BullnBearAnalytics really? not I'm Coming Out by Diana Ross?

  • is that oates singing like half the lead? never heard him sing before

  • @lazer59882 Yes, that iks John Oates singing lead, he takes the part at the beginning and they trade off all through the song. John sings lead on a lot of songs on their CDs just not on a lot of singles. Two that I am sure you have heard are She's Gone, one of their biggest hits, and the remake of You've Lost that Loving Feeling. I am surprised that you haven't heard those songs with John on lead or you didn't notice it was him.

  • @BullnBearAnalytics Right on.

  • @BullnBearAnalytics i think u misunderstood the song completely

  • @BullnBearAnalytics get back in. you just killed them inside

  • @kenndogg51 Hey everyone, thanks for all your support. It has been 2 years since I have officially come out of the closet and told my parents, "Mom, dad, I'm gay." and I haven't looked back since!

  • i love this song so much

  • AWESOME!

  • As an alumnus of VT and fan of Daryl Halll, I am touched that Hall and Oates provided comfort to students during the VT shooting, Especially with the upcoming anniversary. Keep rocking forever Daryl!

  • i totally agree, doesnt even touch the original. but i guess they used open up for the band that originally sang this, the five stairsteps, and they kinda sang it out of respect for the band they used to open for.

  • well yeah the original is always the best but this is the best cover

  • You should listen to Donnie McClurkin's cover of this song. I'm a rabid Daryl Hall fan, but I think Donnie does a better cover.

  • I've never really liked butter or margarine. I like gravy

  • LOL. nice

  • who sings the version from the persuit of happiness?

  • Hi!

I have a fondness for this song. The radio station I listen to played it seemingly over and over during the Virginia Tech shooting aftermath.

Was a comfort to me during that terrible time for the Hokie Nation!

Type to you later! God bless!

  • Hall and Oates can sing the alphabet....and still add that classic H&O flava! cool posting!

  • Maudlin crap version. Wankers.

  • i love this song !

when a was a little child my parents where listnen to daryl hall and john oats so this song bring memories comes live !

  • I think it is a ok version but it is abit to perfect, hard to explain. Abit like boys 2 men, to much butter on the bread.

  • For my dearest little friend "Lara-Violet"...

  • Valerie Carter has the best version,

  • I love this version the best.

  • siik song love it

  • really good version.....

  • *Wow* what a versatile song. I REALLY like the Five Starsteps, but I have to say Beth Orton and Hall & Oats both add a great deal to the song.. Thanks for posting!

  • A decent, simple, stripped-down version of an awesome classic.

  • Great song.... Great Version....

    period

  • i really like this one, i love the five stairsteps but this one the lyrics flow better, like how they switched them up a little.

  • Maybe Hall got bored with the fact that there are only 2 verses repeated over and decided to re-write this classic. Bad decision. This is one time when I liked Oats better.

  • this is pretty nice. i think ilike this better dan da original

  • Oh, boy....sigh.

  • hey mathew, blow it out of your crinkly rosee.

  • nice song..........

  • if you don't like a song, you don't have to listen to it.
