  • For someone like me, just getting started, this is practical, usable and valuable information. Thank you for sharing!

  • Thank you very much. Learned more in the video than in a lot of the readings I've done.

  • very nice. thanks alot for this video. keep it up sir.

  • Great video. This is the best straight to the point, easy to understand video on using one flash, and taking a portrait. Just what I was searching for. Great tips on posing. Excellent video. Thank you

  • Great great tutorial. Now I can't wait to put my hands on the umbrella kit I ordered today.

  • Great tutorial Mark! The only thing you might want to let people know for these types of situations is they should always have their flash angling down on the subject to avoid background shadows. With the flash level with the subject a distinct shadow will be very pronounced. Great work and easily understandable!

  • Thank you for this!

  • Thank you!

  • Good explanation Mark.

  • Great video! Do you know how I can go about setting up a Canon 580EX-II for similar results?

  • reflector or difuser must be used

  • Simple and easy to understand and do. Thanks so much.

  • I appreciate this tip! Thanks Mark.

  • definitely more straighforward than many other flash tutorials I have seen

  • Great stuff...I love your results on this setup - super clean, really nice studio quality shot on-the-cheap. One thing I love is you show if you know how to use your equipment, you don't have to have the newest, techiest gadgetry.

I sure hope to see more tutorials in the future. Its inspiring to watch great photos come from great photographers - not great gear.

  • I've seen a few videos similar, but this was the most clear, concise, and easy to understand. Thanks for showing us.

  • Terrific job with every aspect of this tutorial!

  • thanks for this video Mark! Really well explained and straightforward. ; )

  • thnks for this video. it was simple and yet so much info. Finally, i figured out how to use that darn Vivitar 285hv i have. the instructions are just too complicated. typically i wing it and they come out.

  • great vid ,Mark !

  • Great tutorial. I like the way you explain things especially "head passed stomach" and "ear disappears". I hope you make more!

  • Great vid Mark. Thanks.

    More would be welcome !

  • perfect ....love the way you explain the flash ...now i finaly understand ...thanks

  • Video was not bad, but Mark forgot to tell us how to set the power on a Viv 285. Just fiddling around with the calculator dial doesn't *SET* the power. That is done separately, on the sensor cell housing.

Now, it is pretty easy to forget, that's true. But you shouldn't do it in a YouTube instructional!

[I've lost count of the times I worked everything out with the calculator, and then neglected to actually set the sensor control until I was six shots in.]

  • great video and explanation!

  • GREAT VIDEO

  • mark that was awesome

seeing the 2 different pictures after showing us the technique was cool...
