  • This is a good video besides the fact that you dont really say what low medium or high would be when shimming. To someone who is watching this to do it themselves, saying shim the bevel gear about medium height helps very little. Ive searched relentlessly for a video explaining shim thickness and roughly the number used for each. I know it varies GB to GB but still, it would be much more helpful than the vague "shim it low"

  • Dose anyone know if there is a steel M249 gearbox shell out there?? I'm doing a massive durability overhaul on my A&K minimi and that would ice the cake!

  • @FactaNonVersa Go to evike.com and go to the internal parts section. in gearboxes, click on "M249 Gearbox" and then select the Wild Monkey gearbox shell. It's special order due to low demand, so don't be discouraged by the out of stock thing. Hope this helped.

  • i see you have a delayer clip, my man

  • saying "i shimmed this" helps no one!!! you need to indicate "what the hell shimming is" poor video for someone looking to shim a gear box... NEXT

  • some thing to do after is put about half the screws in and try spinnin it then....

  • Hello Sir, what gear grease do you recommend for maximum performance?

If you can reply, thanks. I have been customizing my guns lately and the only thing i haven't done is gearbox wise.

  • this may sound dumb but where exactly is the gear supposed to line up on the piston before you close up the gearbox, you turn it left until its at the first notch in the gear right?

  • Thanks to everyone who's watched and linked this video. Haven't been doing muchvwith airsoft except staffing Op Pine Lains at fort drum in ny. Google it and check it out..

  • can you upload more videos like this one? thats freakin awesome!!!

  • lol so funny video!? keep on uploading

  • How would i fix side to side movement?

  • @xx117711xx By putting shims between the gear.

  • xD

  • Amazing video, keep It up!

  • work ;]]

  • you should post a video on how to bevel your gears.

  • You are a wonderful person! My P90 now shoots much more accurately, much faster, and the motor sounds like it's just taking a pleasant stroll through the park. All in all, hell of a vid!

  • great video. helped immensely. subscribed!

  • Awesome video, im upgrading my ICS M4, and just recently bought all new internals for high speed gearbox and this video has helped tremendously. Thank you! and happy airsofting.

  • CA gearbox? i have one too :D

  • mm guys i need help i was thinking of buying a 60$ dboys m4 and customize it on airsoft gi and i saw dboys 190$ scar what is better ( i will upgrade dboys m4 internals gears pistons... etc) so please reply ;p thanks

  • What about grease? do you need any grease in there? (airsoft noob here)

  • @ostmash YES. or it will ruin it

  • is this the same with a v3 gear box?

  • I would recommend a different technique.....just search for the Video "Airsoft Minigun V2 V3 Gearbox Shimming Different Technique"...this is the best shimming possible, with every other technique, you run the risk of breaking the pinion, and breaking teeth, because they do not have perfect contact.

  • Added to my faves.

I've only had to be inside my gb a few times and its nice to know that I had the right idea. I'm gonna refur friends to this vid. Very well done.

  • hey guise i'm a airsoft newfag

My KA para-fal's had a bb stuck so I feel now like the gearbox is kind of loose. idk, but it's weird.

Because I fired a few times when it was stuck.. so..

    Wut do?

  • would it be possible for you to do a tutorial about installing a Extreme fire mosfet? or any mosfet? I haven't been able to find video of taking apart and AEG down to the gearbox ,wiring, and motor.

Great videos soldered my first dean's yesterday and came out great thanks.

  • i have a kart m14 i had problems with the semi auto it would only work on occasion, now when i pull the trigger either on semi or full auto it makes a little bit of noise as if the gears are slightly moving but no more just a small click. can you tell what is wrong with it? is it a shimming problem?

  • 1:11 THATS WHAT SHE SAID!!!

  • How do you know when your gears are "broken in"? I bought some new gears an they just wont spin freely. Could that be the problem?

  • will a bad shimming jog cause a gearbox to lock up?

  • it its pointless if there is no bad shiming in the video , just to know how a bad shim is and how to solve it , if every thing works fine on the first try i havent learned anything do i ?

  • hi guys

    nice vid lrasdeadman

me and some friends have been wondering

could it be possible to have the piston in the loaded position so when u pull the trigger the piston releases immediately instead of going back first?

  • @Cunelito

Some guns do have that firing mechanism, but most AEGS don't, as it's more complicated to assemble. I don't think you could get a trigger/electronics system to do that, but I may be wrong. highly unlikely, though.

  • getting a new shim set in two days =)

  • 2:28 thats what she said!

  • what type of gearbox is that?

  • and the antireversal where is?

  • So, I'm new to shimming. Do you only put one shim on each side of the gear? Or do you stack like 3 shims onto one side of a gear to really lift it up? And why are there different shim sizes? Are the little gear pieces you put the shims on different sizes?

  • @gamemaster905 Shimming is to make the gears mesh perfectly, as the gearbox shell and perhaps the and bearings gears themselves may have some small inaccuracies from the production.

  • for cleaning the gear i like to wipe it down with a rag and grease it up with some silicone is that good idea or should i polish it if so how to

  • After I shimmed my gearbox. my gun was makin that whinning noise and i didn't know it was the shimming until i saw this video. What height was your bevel gear shimmed to in this video?

  • @striker5570 Did you adjust the height of the motor? It's a small screw at the end of the motor.

  • @Laofse yeah i adjusted it all different heights and it wasn't working. but i opened my gearbox and just re-shimmed it and now it is fine.

  • @striker5570 Yeah, had the same problem with my CA Steyr AUG, i shimmed the gearbox to get the bevel gear as low as possible, to make sure it gripped well, and that did the trick.

  • After I shimmed my gearbox. my gun was makin that whinning noise and i didn't know it was the shimming until i saw this video. What height was yours shimmed to in this video?

  • @lrasdeadman am I supposed to remove the spring behind the cutoff lever when shimming. I notice youre cutoff lever is all the way down, but when the spring is on, my sector gear grabs it once per rotation, causing resistance

  • is it normal to have the sector gear elevated as much as 1 mm

  • @jessedc The sector gears teeth that interlock with the spur gear must have like a 1 or half mm gap inbetween them ;) Just use shims to get them as close together without them physicaly scratching against each other but just so the gears interlock nicely :)

  • wow almost every shimming guide on youtube is done with classic army gearboxes

  • im having trouble putting my anti reverse latch in right i cant seem to figure out how the springs go on to it

  • @CHECKMATE116 i had a similar problem but its hard to explain... but it should be springy against the bevel gear... so the bent end should hook around the curved end of the latch, and the straight end should push off the wall of the mechbox, infront of the 'plate' that holds the wires from touching the gears... the 'corner' of the anti reversal latch should make contact with the bevel gear... be warned, it takes some time to assemble it, cuz it will pop out... hope this helped

  • 3:49 that's what she said

  • is it normal that when I close the gearbox case and tighten in the screws, the gears don't spin anymore... but without screws, they spin flawlesly... what's up with that?

  • Hey, I have a V3 box, and I can completely remove all its contents apart from the cut off lever, so I shim whilst the cut off lever is in place, so is it normal for the sector gear to catch onto the cut off lever when i'm putting my finger into the hole and spinning the gears (without anything else in the box obviously). I'm referring about the little nub on the bottom of the sector gear, it makes a revolution then stops on the lever and dosnt continue to spin completely freely like in your vid

  • @ChrizFromUK did you find an answer to this question by any chance because I've been all over forums and youtube trying to find the same answer?

  • @jessedc Hey, yeh I worked my problem out, there were two things aparently what I did 'wrong'. 1) I added a spring guide with bearings and a new piston with bearings when I should only have ONE of the two with bearings. and 2) I recently upgraded nylon bushing to Metal bushings and because theyre a little bigger i had to remove a shim on two of the gears (just make sure I had at least one on each gear) That fixed the problem, chances are you have a shimming problem ;)

  • OMG an airsoft person that doesn't sound like Justin Bieber.

  • thanks dude!

  • I'm trying to fix a Both Elephant XM8. If your not familiar with one, good for you. That means you were smart enough to avoid this $50 wall hanger.

So far, these assholes over at Both Elephant have no idea how to make a proper gearbox. I'm actually baffled by how to put it back together. So, if you get the time to tinker around with one, let me know.

  • @DontFearTheReaper1 if its plastic, you might as well give up now..

  • From 1:11 to 1:23 sounds very sexual, lol

  • On my G&G m4 gearbox the gears seemed to rub until I put 0.65mm of shims underneath the sector gear, putting it fairly high up. Does it sound like I should just make a bit of a compromise and let the gears rub a little in favor of going lower?

  • So I have to have shims on both bottom and top of the gears? What about lubrication? Where exactly do I have to put the lubrication on the gears?

  • How are the stock standard ratio gears from CA? Im trying to run a M150 setup using standard ratio gears, mosfet, and a 11.1v 4000mah lipo.

  • Is it possible for the bevel gear to be shimmed to the highest level yet still not be high enough for the motor's pinion gear to mesh correctly?

  • hi just a question what does metal bearing bushing do asides making your gears rotate smoothly? and whats the difference with the 8mm,7mm and 6mm? does every aeg have different sizes of holes for the bushings?

  • So what is a good amount of times the sector gear should rotate when there properly shimmed.

  • I've opened my gearbox to install bushings and shims. But there is a problem. Everything rotates nice and smoothly until I install the bevel gear. When the bevel is installed, there is binding somewhere. I cannot smoothly rotate the gears with the bevel is in place. I've tried several combinations of shims, all with the same results.

Any ideas what could be happening. This is my first attempt at shimming. Working in a V2 gear box.

  • ok.... im totaly confused im trying to get into shimming but what exactly is shimming? could someone plz help me here cause i need to get my guns working better

  • Great job. I used this when starting on mechbox servicing, and havent had any issues with shimming :)

  • Great guide!

  • how do you install an anti reversal latch? ive been doing some upgrades lately and everything is pretty straight forward besides the latch. if you could do a video on this it would be very much appreciated

  • up and down movement is called, end float! just so you know

  • Why does a gearbox need shims? does it matter whether its shims/bearings? differences between the two? thanks!

  • Hey, nice vid :) My Sector gear stops spinning when the top lug is just about to go over the cut off latch.....is it not supposed to do that? I'm kinda new to gearboxes haha.

  • How do you know how much to shim the top of the gears? Otherwise great tutorial; I'll have to do this to my M249 when I upgrade the shit out of it.

  • u just wanna stop up and down motion as much as possible while still having a smooth run...if there are to many shims on top or bottom itll be to tight and will easily lock the gearbox up so then you have to reshim again

  • Hi i have a Classic Army M15 SPC, I have shimmed it as you say and it all seems neat, but when everything as assembled the it whines no matter what the shimming on the motor is like... Also singleshot only fires everyother shot... any ideas?

    Thanks

  • You may need to adjust the height of the motor.

  • If the motor whines no matter how you adjust it, you may need to shim the bevel gear higher. As far as the single shot issue we need a little more info. Does the gun sound like its cycling correctly ( ie: one shot or multiple)? If you look in the hop chamber from the magwell is the air nozzle moving correctly?

  • @lrasdeadman Do you know why my gun doesn't shoot bbs and why my gears seem to spin prematurely/freely when i pull the trigger. Pretty sure it has something to do with shims because i lost track of a few.

  • Hey, thanks for making that video. It was really helpful.

  • 1:12 thats what she said

  • @shadow165x

I'd say that's what he said..

  • @shadow165x lol

  • i still do not get it i do not think i will open up my gear box ever haha to much shit

  • Thanks bunches d-man, great help on my gb.

  • I just ordered the 2009 production jg m4a1 carbine with tightbore barrel. How is the shim job on this?

  • Honestly it doesnt matter what brand the gun is. I have found that aside from TMs every other gun out there could stand to be cracked open and a few things addressed including shimming.

  • @lrasdeadman normaly id agree but i think these new G&P's dont need any internal looking at. i took myne apart when i got it to drop in a m90 spring to make it field legal but the shimming was 100% immaculate. zero gear noise, totally quiet gearbox. all you heard was the piston smacking on the piston head.

  • thats my uncle!!!! he's awsome!

  • hi im making a airsoft ww2 1919a4 30.cal where can i get a good cheap fast shooting gearbox for the 30.cal

  • i actually make the brownings. I prefer a M14 box or a m249 box and hop works well its easy to mount and is uber reliable

  • @gentlemanghost117 If youare building brownings, please make em relatively slow, not those 25 rps high speed gun..

  • how is the shimming on a new cyma gearbox?

  • hi if my sector gear is like slightly or just barely touching the spur gear is that ok or do i have to put one more shim

  • What is the benefit of polishing your gears? It seems to me that after a good shimming, the polished parts are not touching anything...???

  • You should screw your gearbox back together when shimming.

  • @OSU5312 Agreed, then you'll test the friction under real conditions.

  • Thanks a lot! Awesome tutorial!

  • Great work... This is the best tutorial video I ever watched... Unlike some other tutorials who named the gears wrongly.

  • My Classic Army cant turn over a M110 spring and i was wondering if the shimming could affect it

  • It could if it sound like a screeaching sound.

It could be your battery or motor.

  • Yes it could be a cause of your problem because it is putting excess, unnecessary stress on the motor. It could also be a weak battery. If you haven't checked the shimming since you bought it, I recommend you take a look at that before you spend $30+ on a new battery.

  • Your gear box is orgasmic.

  • Question: What are some tall tale signs that your AEG has bad shimming without taking apart the gearbox?

  • Reaper, if you take your GB out, use an allen wrench to see if you can move your gears side to side by pushing the center of each bushing. They might not move if all the gears are in there, so I think you might have to take it apart to know if its properly shimmed or not.

  • yeah, but I've never handled a AEG before, so I'm kind of afraid of mucking it up without anyone showing me how to do that in person.

So, let me rephrase the question: What are some of the tall tale signs that your AEG has bad shimming without field stripping the AEG?

  • you really can't. the most closed indicator is to open it up, hold the mechbox and shake it. If you hear clicking sounds, it's likely the gears have room between them and the mechbox, which would mean bad shimming

The only other clear indicator is if its overshimmed. you can tell that because the gun won't fire cuz the gears are too tight.

  • If you are getting a very low rate of fire on a fully charged battery that dies quickly on a fairly weak spring, then you should probably get your gearbox reshimmed.

  • a little third strike in the background, NICE! Very informative too, now I won't be afraid to try to shim

  • Thanks! check out the tut link in the details for more info and my writeup

  • When shimming, is it ok for a "little" side to side play?

  • the goal is to get as little if any play
