I had a porcupine come into a Appalachian Trail shelter with me at night. I scared it away but it came back. Me and 2 ladies were trying to sleep. The 1 lady was totally scared. Porcupine was eating the salty wood where sweaty hikers rested. No one got quiled.

On the contrary. Dogs and cats will learn not to attack something that kicked their asses. Cats are a bit better at it as they have about twice as many neurons as dogs, but none the less they will.

Think of it this way, Humans have 100,000,000 neurons and 10,000,000 are located in our cerebral cortex, hence if you lose your finger over something you will remember and not do that action again. Even with less then 3% of what a human has for cats and 1.5% for dogs, they will remember.

The porcupine actually wont attack the dog, they're more defensive animals, so porcupine injuries are to be blamed on the pup. Dogs will obviously smell the animal and chase it down, then when they try to sniff it or bite it, they get a nasty surprise. A lot of people assume the porcupine jumps backwards or summersalts and attacks their pet, lol.
