  • It's 2012 now, so you should be 47 already and I must say you are STUNNING! Just absolutely gorgeous. You look like you're in your 20's...amazing!

  • @butterfly4698 Not just yet, I turned 46 on Sunday. I was born in 66. :-) Thanks so much for the compliment. Ignore any praise I had for the BKT in this video, as I have since talked about the very bad results. In fact, I am considering going natural. We shall see what happens! Take Care!

  • Leave the Creamy Crack aloooooone lol

  • @CherryAppetite I truly want to, but as I reach the one year mark in my relaxer next week, I have almost given up on trying to maintain my hair in its" relaxedtural" state. If I did not work out five mornings a week (I sweat like crazy), I might be able to hold out longer. Also, if I could find a believeable looking pony-tail to match my roots (the drawstrings haven't work for me so far), I might have something. I am tempted to make an appt this weekend! :-(

  • Black women never age when they take care of themselves you look great

  • @143me4eva Thanks so much! Some of my white/Chinese friends of a similar age were talking about my lack of wrinkles. I told them that everybody has wrinkles, but I said this pigment is a good thing!!!! Thanks!

  • 45? damn , I thought you were like in your 20s haha :)

  • @BabyMamaDukez Wow, thanks so much! Really appreciate that! Take Care, and thanks for stopping by.

  • wow i cannt believe your 45 you look great! i'll be 45 in a few hours dec29 i need to step up my gameeeee lol

  • @1985cheryl Hey, aren't you sweet! I will be 46 in February, and I must admit it is very exciting. However, I have been forced to accept the fact that working out and taking care of myself are things that I can't get around. It is a pain in the butt, but the rewards are great! Check out some of my more recent videos for additional tips! Again, thx so much, and Happy New Year!

  • Sorry for all the stupid mis-types! I need to proofread before sending...

    Hope some of this helps!

    -Carissa

  • @DimensionsHairDesign No worries! It helps, but I am too gun-shy to act on any of the advice for now. I pray that some of the people checking out this thread will benefit. Thanks so much though!

  • And I do the BKT treatments for WAY cheaper that you paid... For your hair length I would have charged about $130. All the time I even layer the BKT over a mild relaxer on the roots. The relaxer straightens, and then the BKT treatment repairs and adds shine. I would do both treatments for about $200. This would actually be a great option for your hair if you could find a stylist that knows what they are doing! Again, I am so sorry! On behalf of all money hungary idiot stylists out there. : )

  • @DimensionsHairDesign I believe my "old" stylist relaxed my front and back edges first, but not the roots. I wish I ran across someone who knew what they were doing. What hurt my feelings the most was that my "old" stylist never even offered any advice on how to fix the mess that was made - no treatments, just a suggestion that "I" write a letter to the manufacturer. This is a stylist I had for years, so who do I trust now? :-( Thanks though!

  • Japanese Straightening is a process that uses a cream form of a perm solution that is fairly gentle. It is applied like a relaxer, then the hair is shampooed, and then the hair is straightened with a flat iron. In that state, a neutralizer is applied to the hair to lock it in the straightened form. Then the hair is shampooed again and styled. I recommend Opti-Smooth by Matrix. The product is only like $50 so don't let a stylist rip you off! about $150 would be a good price. =)

  • @DimensionsHairDesign Thanks, it sounds wonderful, but I am too gun-shy at this point. :-)

  • ness would have been a clarifying shampoo- probably shampooing with it several times! And that would have pulled out most of the keratin bonded to your hair. I truly apologize for your experience, and hope that the products I suggested help! And I am SO glad that you use biotin! It is fabulous!

Lastly, have you ever tried Japanese straightening? It is pretty fabulous too! And much better for the hair than relaxers. Let me know how everything goes : )

  • @DimensionsHairDesign Thanks again. However, my follicles are so mad can you believe that the most concentrated form of biotin barely brought any results, which is why I added MSM to my regimine. I wish you were my stylist during this fiasco because that sounds like good advice, which I never got. :-( Anyway, I have never heard of the Jap. straightening, and at this point, girl, I am scared to try any unknown chemical. Will keep you posted as I try to make it to May 2012 w/out a touch-up.

  • Hey Carolyn! This is Carissa... the stylist that posted all of those comments ---->>>>>

I was under my husbands profile. Just to clarify, by "product build up" I was referring to the liquid keratin. Before it is melted into the hair, it feel VERY sticky! It sounds like she also put the keratin all the way to your scalp (you are supposed to only go to wear the flat iron can reach) and that definitely could have caused your roots to mat up! The only thing that could have removed the sticky-

  • @DimensionsHairDesign Oh.... That makes sense. My stylist said the same thing happened to a white customer, so I think you are right. The matted roots thing was so terrible. What should a stylist should have done to correct this? I ask for anyone else who might have this experience. Thanks so much in advance!

  • I would recommend to start using a protein based argan oil deep-conditioner, which you can purchase at sallys beauty supply, and taking biotin vitamins. That will help your hair growth and help keep it from breaking. Also, PLEASE make sure you are using a heat protectant (also can be purchased at sallys- I love beyond the zone spray) anytime you are using heat on your hair.

I honestly am sorry for your experience and would love to help you!

Feel free to email me carissaholdaway@gmail.com

  • @Fallen3748 Will keep you posted on my progress! Maybe you should do a video if you have not already. :-)

  • @Fallen3748 I actually went to Sally's yesterday and bought the argan shampoo, the moisturizing conditioner AND the deep conditioner! Thanks a lot, but u are contributing to my product junky ways. I have been taking biotin for months, and added MSM to my supplement-junky collection about a month ago. Hopefully it will help. Also, I do use heat protectors. So I will be trying the deep conditioner tomorrow, and I am looking forward to it!! Thanks so much for the comments and advice.

  • caused breakage at that point. But most likely, you expected the treatment to add your regular amount of oil, not just protein, and so it slowly depleted until it was so dry it caused breakage. The sulfate free shampoos and conditioners take out very little oil, but also add very little back in. So for ethnic hair, you still need to bee applying glossing oils, especially to the ends. But mainly I apologize that your stylist did not tell you all this. Especially for that price!

  • @Fallen3748 Actually my stylist told me to use less products after the BKT, but I found myself needing to moisturize more than normal. I assume the Marcia-recommended shampoo and conditioner is sulfate-free -- that was never mentioned or discussed, and I returned them, so I don't know. However, during the first two weeks after the BKT, even when I massaged oil into my scalp, the matted roots situation would not improve. This is what led the stylist to relax it! A lot of bad stuff happened!

  • However, Keratin treatments should NEVER cause breakage. They are essentially a deep conditioning protein treatment that hopefully lasts four months. The only things that I can think of that could have caused this is

    1) That you stopped using oily products to keep your hair moisturized

    2) Your protein intake/stress caused the hair to weaken and break more easily

And in the first few days, the added product buildup could have made your hair stick together, and just like brushing tangled hair,

  • @Fallen3748 Not so sure, as I kept the same moisturizing routine after the first 3 days (the no getting it wet period), my protein intake/stress levels remained the same, and during the first few days I don't know what prods could have built up. After shampooing/conditioning with the Marcia products, my hair was not silky like my stylist said it would be, she said i would need less leave-ins, but I needed the same just to comb it! I moisturized to get rid of the sticky-ness, but no luck. :-(

  • Hello! I am sorry about your bad experience! I just wanted to talk to you about a few things. First of all, that your stylist used way too much product! Your hair should not have felt sticky afterwards. I am also marcia (Mar-see-ah) certified, and all of the product should be melted into the hair- if there is residue, she used too much!

Additionally, these keratin treatments should be removing about 50-75% of frizz and curl, but not leaving it as straight as a relaxer.

  • @Fallen3748 What you say may make sense because my hair was an unnatural, chocolately-brown color for the first few days, and before and after shampooing with the Marcia shampoo/conditioner -- it was SOOOO sticky. Also, the roots were matted -- worse than before I came in in need of a touch-up. Not sure what went wrong, but something really did! Thanks for the comments/clarifications!

  • Here you like it and then in your other video you don't

  • @rpee7558 I liked it until my hair starting breaking (not shedding) like crazy. I lost at least 4-5 inches in some areas. So that is the reason for the flip-flop in my opinion.

  • Lol I'm really loving how she says, "make your new growth act right over the next 3 months", I don't know about you but this sounds pretty awkward to me. Haha.

  • @koolkatakari Are you talking about my stylist? It has been almost a year since I had the treatment done, so that does sound vaguely familiar. Only now, I just feel foolish. I wish I did more homework beforehand -- I was just so desperate to get away from relaxers. :-(

  • you have a unique nose ,.

  • @currinae321 Really... Not sure if that is good or bad. :-)

  • @eformationqueen its qood :)

  • @currinae321 Ok, then cool! :-) Thanks! Have a good one!

  • Hi

You should try Beaute Ultrasonic. Its a repair flat iron that does not use any heat at all

  • @keratin4u Thanks for the suggestion, I will look into it.

  • YOU wrote a book on "healthy hair" lol.......From watching this video it seems you're not too informed on the health of kinky/curly/coily hair. Keratin treatments and relaxers in no way contribute to healthy hair. I also don't understand your opposition to your natural hair??? *shoulder shrug*....to each is own. I just wish you didn't write a book claiming to know about the health of hair. Reminds me of the blind leading the blind. *sigh*

  • @najmaj Wow, a little harsh. First, I have no opposition to natural hair, but after relaxing for 35+ years, it is very hard to go back to that. Over the past 6+ months, it has been a challenge to get used to the real texture of my hair, but I am trying. In my book I offered a six-week regimen that focused on deep-conditioning, gentle handling, finding a good stylist, going easy on the chemicals and getting the right nutrients. Unfortunately, in later years I got lazy/took bad advice. :-(

  • 45 ???? U LOOK GREAT

  • @keeblerelves133 Thanks so much!!!!

  • Hi carolyn ,which do you prefer no-lye or lye relaxers? pretty respond.

  • @TheNeptunePisces83 At this juncture, my answer would be NEITHER! However, I have read that in some cases no-lye can be worse. However, as I look at the decline of my hair over the last four years -- it feels like it is all bad. :-( Sorry, but you caught me at a negative phase, and I haven't had a touch-up since February! I hope I can remain strong!

  • I have that blouse, you must have great taste in clothes! loved you video

  • @MsRai83 Thank you! This is actually a dress from Cache -- my husband bought it. :-)

  • Hi .

Nice video despite all the 'you know' s haha.

I'm 17 both of my parents are african. I have looots of hair and my hair is thick. My grandma relaxed my hair when I was 8 with an ADULT relaxer and it damaged my hair. I had dandruff problems and my hair was falling off (strangley enough i had no bald patches or anything). Anyways today I still have dandruff problems.

I desperatley want to straighten my hair but I'm scared. Should I do the Keratin Treatment ? Or will it ruin my hair ?

  • @shallaaa13 Thanks, you know... :-) I am the wrong person to ask about the Brazilian Keratin Treatment. Some people have had success, but doing it was the worst thing I could have ever done for my hair. In some sections I experienced at least 3+ inches of breakage, and more in others. It has been terrible! I also read in O Magazine that the products claiming to be formaldehyde free are actually not truthful in their claims -- they even mentioned Organix! So I am done with that!

  • did you get botox ?

  • Hey carolyn, I read your book, and really like it, glad I found your channel. you look great!

  • @4realrenee Hi Renee, which book did you read, "Secrets of a Skinny Jean Queen...?" Regardless, I am glad you liked it. Also, I am glad you found my channel as well, and you look great too! :-) Thanks for the compliment & thanks for stoppying by!

  • The Marcia BKT I had done at a PR@Partners in the DC metro area cost me $450, and it was the absolute worst hair decision I ever made. The results were so devastating that I still struggle not to cry when I look at the areas of breakage throughout my hair (I talk more about this in a video I made a few weeks ago). Just be careful, and do your research. Also, thanks for the age compliment. I am trying to hang in there!

  • how much does it cost to get yours done? and you don't a day over 40, you could pass for a 20 year old.

  • thanks for the video it was full of information i wanted to know...but.....try to not say "you know" so much....it was kinda annoying hahaha

  • @aaliyah2nd Ha! You are so right. I used to laugh at rappers when they kept saying, "You know what I'm saying?" Over, and over again, to the point, where I was like, "No, I don't know what you're saying!" Now, when I am sitting in front of a camera only talking to myself, I may as well be saying the same thing! I just posted a video tonight, and I intentionally tried not to say it so much. Now I am working on "Um"! Take Care!

  • Was your hair always long like that or did you manage your hair up to that length? My hair stops about 2 inches from the top of my back but I want it much longer than that! Kind of where yours is. Any suggestions?? :D

  • @1SexiNici Well, since the late 90's my hair has been this length or longer, except when trims turned into what I thought were hair cuts, or I do something dumb. So, deep conditioning, gentle handling, trying to go "easier" on the relaxers (no often than 8+ weeks -- relaxers are so damaging), no touch-ups and coloring at the same time, very little blow drying (I air dry at home) and heat, and I keep a close eye on trims, usually trimming MYSELF (got scissors from Sally's). :-) Hope it helps!

  • wait ,you have book about healthy hair in 6 weeks and yet you relax ...which has caused your hair damage as it wont grow on one side?

  • @ayieshastewart What can I say? I obviously don't have good sense. Bad habits are hard to break. :-(

  • Well you know what they say....... GOOD BLACK DON'T CRACK! You look great! I'm interested in getting this done to my hair (natural, no perm, mid back length) but doesn't the product contain formaldehyde?

  • ugly

  • 45!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I though you were 26 years old! Congrat!!! what is your secret??? You dont look any closer at all near 30!!! Bless you

  • i did some searching online for horror stories like yours (and worse) and eventually stumbled upon a thread discussing hair loss experienced during BKT and their advice from dermotologists. the final say was that hair loss is likely an allergic reaction.

there are women who experience this problem, but most do not. so i guess the best thing is to strand test the process first, and pray your genetics don't rebel against it. because when it works, it seems to be nothing short of a miracle.

  • @EbunnyEthereal Fortunately I did not suffer any hair loss, my problem was just the roots matting like crazy and the keratin residue on the strands of my hair -- both caused breakage as I tried to comb my hair, even after I shampooed and conditioned my hair. So hair breakage was my biggest side-effect. :-(

  • Thanks so much! Secrets of a Skinny Jean Queen tells most of my "secrets". :-)

  • WOWZA?! 45 in Feb?! I hope as good as you at 34 let alone 44!! Brava!!

  • Just lay with it smoothed flat on each side of your head. However... All of my efforts were so wasted. My hair is so much thinner after the breakage caused by this treatment. See my last two videos on it. :-(

  • How are you supposed to sleep then if you cannot manipulate the hair or put it in a ponytail etc? My hair curls up when I sleep even when I just perm it and my hair doesn't like wraps. Its very long and gets caught under my body when I sleep with it out, so what would I do?

  • My stylist touched up my edges first, but it is supposed to take the place of relaxers, so your hair does not have to be relaxed first.

  • do have to relex ur first or not

  • wow you look great 45 i could of sworn you was like 26 or something. its good it works for you the treatement.

  • Hi. This is very helpful. Would you mind posting an update on how your hair is after you wash it? Thanks!

  • wow u look amazing

  • Well actually I am 44. I won't be 45 until February, but thanks for the compliment. I am trying to hold things together and find a solution for myself and others as well in the quest to get/keep relaxed hair healthy and fully. It has been a tall order for me, but I am hopefully to see major improvements by my birthday. We shall see. :-)

  • 45 WOW! Can't believe that. You are an inspiration.
