Ideal thing for making open wire feeders is on a fine day, use a 20 ft plank laid out in the garden. Use strong nails as pegs to hold one end of the wires fixed. Then stretch the wire flat out onto the plank and fit insulators on. peg wire to the far end. The plank makes a great flat surface to work on, adjusting the space of each insulator and fixing them in place. One every 10" should be fine, depending on the spacing of the cable. If I remember about 6" for SWG 14 is about 600 Ohms.
