is there a difference between the combo and the head? cos ive seen a lot of vids of the combo and i keep getting amazed but i hvnt seen one of the head and im a little worried that its not good =/ what do u guys think?
@jamesbonello1 there should be no reason the head isn't as good as the combo. it is exactly the same thing, only with or without a speaker. you will find a difference in sound because the combo has an open back, while mosts cabs are closed on the back. how much it will sound like the combo has to do with what cab you choose, and how many speakers it has. I can tell you that it sounds monstrous through my mesa 4*12 cab. It doesn't sounds as aggressive as the dual rectifier however.
@ogardsveien hmm ic, i got a jackson guitar with emg HZ pickups.. now as you certainly know your pickups are active while mine are passive, i have a feeling that having the active pickups help a lot in creating that kinda "brutal" sound you know? and im scared that since i have the passives, it wouldnt be near to what you can have with the actives =/
@jamesbonello1 Well, there are passives that can have the same or more output compared to actives. I don't know that much about passives, but I think you should choose active or passive because of sound and not output. I would try the amp with a guitar equipped with same type of pickups as you have. You can definitely get a brutal metal tone with passive pickups, take a look at the guitarists in Lamb of God for example.
@KissMeImPunk not an easy question, i think the reason people chose the fireball over the screamer is that the fireball doesn't come in a combo format. so when people play the screamer, they often play the combo, but when playing a fireball it is often connected to a 4*12 cab. I bought a mesa boogie 4*12 cab because I'm getting a dual rectifier soon (maybe even today :D) and for now I'm playing the screamer with the cab. It sounds 10 times as heavier as it did beefore, and it packs enough gain!
@ogardsveien Why would people get the Fireball if it would just cost more though? It's not like we all have a gold brick somewhere deep in the basement or anything of that extent
@KissMeImPunk The fireball is voiced more for metal, but it has less options, no reverb, and only two channels. the screamer is on the brighter side (only a problem when using only the combo). I got the dual rec today, and looking forward to finding the tone! maybe I'll make a vid later on.
@deathblackthrashing Hi! If I were you, I would take a look at the Fireball's as well before you buy this amp. Judging by your vid's I'm guessing you want to use it for metal. I've had this amp for almost tow years now, and I'm maybe getting a Fireball because it sounds way more heavy and brutal. The screamer has also cost me a lot of trouble, but I guess that's 1 in a 1000.
@ogardsveien Cool I was thinking of the Fireball, and yes it sounds very brutal. Problem is I'll be using it in my house aswell as the occasional jam with friends, and I feel that having a half stack or even a 2 x 12 will be to space consuming, hard to transport and too loud, so that's why I was thinking of the Screamer.
@deathblackthrashing yeah, I see. I would still consider it though. the advantage of having a head instead of a combo is that it weighs a little less, and that you can just hook up it to another cab at the place you're playing (if there is a cab available). Both of the amps are loud, and the difference in volume is very little. A good thing about having a cabinet (closed) is also that the low end doesn't vanish out the back like it does with the Screamer, which hasn't got much bass. Good luck!
cobyt501st you just have to check ebay or something.
the prize depends on where you live and if your country will charge extra VAT and such. I am probably going to buy a Fireball soon, if you're buying the amp mainly for metal you should take a look at that one aswell.
Yeah, if you crank it, this will a whole other beast - especially with a well-set EQ and overdrive for boost. Sovereign is a hell of a lot more money for not much more in sound. Don't get me wrong - it's a great amp but the screamer can do everything it can do at a lower price.
@ogardsveien buying a hot plate will sort the problem, it allows you to play at low volume while pushing the tubes, it still won't push the speakers but you get more br00talz.
Yes, I've been thinking about it. I'm just busy buying some other gear at the moment, so don't know if I want to spend even more money. I bought some custom earplugs, so I can crank the amp without damaging my ears. then sound will be realistic, but with a lower volume=)
I normally use gain and bass on full (only when i'm playing at a low volume) Mid:4 Treble: 4 Lead presence: 6-7 Reverb: 0 on the fourth channel. and pretty low volume.
I really recommend the hotplate, it definitely does the br00tz very easily then.
Though the high 8hz-16hz range does really pierce your ears if you attenuate more than 16 decibels, so you'll need an EQ in the loop for cutting down those frequencies. Other than that, the power tube saturation is godlike.
Pretty cool dude.. I'm torn between this and the Sovereign, but I still need to try them both in the shop... the screamer can definitely do brutal, so I wonder if I even need to go to the Sovereign
The screamer is really all you need, I think the plot behind the price range in the amps isn't that they have better sound, cause there is no such thing as a low/average quality engl amp. they just want to make more money, but i'm sure you could get all the sounds you want from it. one thing is that on low volumes, the screamer. It hasn't got tons and tons of gain, but with an emg/SD u should be fine! when the tubes break up, that's when it gets BRUTAL=)
@ogardsveien u dont need to push the tubes too hard! try an overdrive in front of the distorted channel, with volume up but drive to zero/one. it tightens it up and it's even more brutal, i use a hotcake pedal-amazing-does not change the tone of the amp unlike a shitty tubescreamer.
@ogardsveien but is this amp good for hard rock and heavy metal (not heavy like death metal or black and that stuff) cos ive seen a bunch of reviews and they all say that its good for metal, while thats awesome i need to know if its good for more sortof "classic rock" type of sounds so to speak. what about the cleans, how do u find them? (btw im getting the head, so i hope its the same for it as well =/)
@jamesbonello1 the cleans are great, although I have to admit I use the high gain sounds most by far. It will do classic rock maybe even better than the heavy stuff. cheers
