@gratefultiger I remember reading an interview with Zappa where he said he was trapped in the front of a very cramped crowd when Hendrix played the Whisky, "trapped" because Hendrix was so loud! He said "I couldn't see how somebody could subject himself [meaning Hendrix] to that high of a volume". Guess that guitar wasn't too loud, it was WAY too loud!
Fans of this might like "Underground" by Rosetta West, which I just posted on my channel. It's not the same sunny good-time vibe, but it's really raw slide guitar blues. Check it out if you have the time.
I love how he is truly enjoying himself...though the film is over 35 years old, you can still feel his energy, and joy through the screen. A legend in his own right!
This is like a shot of pure endorphins in my brains. What joy Hound Dog Taylor could wring of those simple blues riffs!! And dig -- no bass player, just two guitars and drums -- making such a joyful racket!! I'm lucky to have seen him live. And always give thanks to Bruce Iglauer (Alligator) Records) who's responsible for putting Hound Dog on the map!!!
@osamasho1 many artists of every form of art from the visual to sound have been long dead before their genius was truly appreciated. The graveyards are filled with the remains of starved artists.
Got to see the Hound and his band a year or so before he died and he still had it.Whole place was up for grabs the last set. He had not an enemy in the world and more fans than sand on Oak St Beach. Who are the 3 knotheads who could dislike this?
hound dog taylor, from the minute i heard him on beware of the dog he was my favorite bluesman. the most authentic player since robert johnson in my humble opinion.
I was blessed to hang with these cats and have a drink with them before a gig in Chicago Heights around 1972. I was 15, and I'm still trying to get over it!
had to work a saturday in 74 or 5 and missed him playing up at Central Mi. 25 years later I have a sidekick kid working for me many years my junior starting to talk about some old dude that played the slide like hell yada yada, so I quiz him further and it ends up being the Dog! dammit
"Everybody know the hound" and ifthey dont they should!!! I learned of the Hound thanks to George Thorogood, one one song Lonesome Jorge says 'dedicated to the late Great Houndog Taylor" so I researched the Hound and have been stuck on him since. RIP Hound and rock them angels to sleep every nite!!!!!!!!!!!
Sweet !.... ....Seen him a few times. At the El Mocombo, in Toronto, and Toronto Folk Festivals, too ! ...Love that distinctive slide sound, and nobody else has that voice !....Nice Post !,,,thanks
Somebody asked about the tuning. I think it's Open D - D-A-D-F#-A-D...Does anybody know what kind of distortion pedals and amp he's using to get that nasty raw sound? it's so bad ass!! i hear he's playing a Teisco guitar and that's part of it. thanks for any info.
@hybridd I think those cheap japanese guitars are an important part of his dirty tone. and I'm pretty sure he doesn't use any kind of pedals, he might be a straight guitar-into-amp player.
thanks. at the beginning of a video it looks like he's pushing a button on something that's on top of his amp. but it looks like a button type switch that's on a pedal and not on an amp.
If anybody has a video or mp3 of Hound Dog (with or without the HouseRockers) playing Hideaway (the youtube video with Hound Dog labeled "Hideaway" is actually him performing "Wild About You" with Little Walter), THEN FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST LET ME KNOW.
I think that Jimi might not even know about him. Although Hound Dog started his career earlier than Hendrix, he became popular after Jimi's death. Taylor's first album was released in 1971, Jimi died in 1970.
But for sure Hound and Jimi were inspired by the same musicians, like Robert Johnson, Little Richard, Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Ray Charles. It's easy to hear it in the music.
WOW! Just look at this dude rock out!!! No one could hide that kind of genuine passion! Great slide player...funny about the tuning... Bet he was an interesting character
Wow! This is absolutely amazing! Today I've heard Taylor for the 1st time and he became one of my favorite artists. He was really great and extremely charismatic guitarist! I love the way he played. It's so wild and looks like he was born to do that. He was very similar to the true king of rock&roll - Chuck Berry. I thought I'd never say sth like that, but for me the show created by Dog seems to be even better than Berry's.
Other band members also do a very good job. Thank you for this vid!
It's like JabberOff says: This blues don't give u the BLUES. OK, it's not technically perfect like Clapton, but Hound Dog had more feeling to what he was doing under his six'th fingernail than Clapton ever has. It's a shame he was discovered so late in his life.
it is totally unnecessary and petty to insult and attempt to diminish clapton while praising taylor. they both did their thing. to try to quantify the amount of feeling they applied while doing it is absurd.
Nah Man, If Clapton Didn't Like Black People, He'd Be Playin' Death Metal Or Somethin' Not Blues, C'mon His Idol Is Robert Johnson, & He Performs Alot With Buddy Guy & BB King, Etc.
Hound Dog Taylor was THE reason Bruce Iglauer quit Delmark and started Alligator Records. Such a man would be hard to find in the music industry nowadays, and a genuine bluesman like HDT would be impossible to find.
Well, let's be grateful that we at least have the precious recordings.
Every time I listen to Hound Dog and the HouseRockers, it puts a big, goofy grin on my face. They simply exude such an energetic, happy vibe, even when they play more conventional blues numbers. Music to dance to, drink to, and live to.
