i think the importance of iris..is not that she was ugly...Ruth was ugly...Iris was just plain...not ugly ..so was regular ...not beautiful not ugly ...just the medium For example Clara was strikingly beautiful and Ruth was strikingly ugly...iris didnt get those reaction..people looked over her

Margarethe was more so like any other mother for that time period. She cared for her daughters but brought them up in a very strict style, I felt, to protect them later on--to keep them strong so as they can look after themselves when she passes away. Iris, it seems, was more so plain--as was Ruth, whom was just clumsy and mentally disabled in some way--neither one confirms to the ideals of "beauty" back than, whereas Clara is just so perfect that its an affliction

In the classic fairytale, Cinderella is born to a rich man. I think a merchant? She only becomes her Stepmother's maid because she and the stepsisters force her to do so with the excuse that she should work for her keep.

I don't remember much because it's been forever since I've read this, but the part where they demand she earn her keep has always stuck in my mind because the father was present at that time and I was thinking "Does this guy not have the balls to stand up for his daughter?'

I thought at first that Casper was going to be Iris' love interest, but now I'm beginning to think that maybe Casper and the Master have a "special" relationship going on. I really can't wait to keep reading and find out :)

This is really interesting. I keep trying to make the Cinderella story fit too, and I think this book is so clever because for instance I never really thought about the mother in the fairytale, other than 'she's mean'. But when you look at Maragethe it's like... well *why* is she so mean, what's wrong with her, and I think you're right, she's going to make Clara's life horrible. But Clara's a jerk. So do we feel bad for her? I don't know. fun though :)

I agree, I think Henrinka will die and Maragethe will marry Van Den Meer.

And I think maybe Iris and Clara will both fall in love with Casper.

Hey girly, loved your review of part 1 and 2 :)

I first thought Iris was the cinderella of the book - plain and un noticable then when Casper appeared I was like oooh he is gonna awaken her inner beauty and she will be painted stunningly and he will fall for her and she will blossom like the most beautiful girl in the town!

But now Im thinking he is just a stupid man. lol

That at the point when she felt interesting and unique enough to be a subject to be painted and maybe even hoped to have been painted beautifully even though deep down she was thinking she was just another grotesque freek - that he crushed her , without thinking.

So now I dont know who will the cinderella of the story be!

! If Iris's mum marries Claras father then that would make her the step daughter

I feel like Ruth has some kind of mental disability too. That's why everyone is like 'she's hideous' but really they just don't understand. I think it is going to try and turn the Cinderella story on it's head a bit and I feel like alot of it is about perception, but your right, I can't imagine having a daughter and saying 'your ugly' because anyone can be beautiful, at least to me! I feel like maybe she likes controlling them!

I agree that the book starts off slow. I read the first couple chapters and was like: "OMG THIS SUCKS" but then it got really good lol
