I'm about to shear my new sheep for the first time.... I've seen shears with a bend in them, to keep them at a more comfortable angle for the shearer. Have you tried the angled ones? If so, do you like them? (I see you're using straight ones.)
@illustratz Hi .I'm so slow to reply - sorry. Guess your sheep are well sheared by now! Anyway, I've not use the bent shears - I'd have to send away for them as they are not available in my local ag. stores. Hope it all went well for you.
felterone, glad it was of some help. I still do it that way but now I cut off all the rough and dirty stuff first (and bag it for the garden) then keep the neck , back and sides in separate bags to make it easier to sort it for spinning later.
I really like your method. I'm a new owner of 2 lovely wethers and don't want to toss them around on their rump. (I also don't think my back would be able to take it.) I think its kinder and gentler on them as well. I think I"ll put them on a stand which might even be easier on the ole back as well. Thanks so much for showing us your method.
She's a mix - blackface mountain and Leicester and probably Galway. She's for crossing with a Texel or Suffolk ram to produce market lamb. Her wool is "incidental" - but I like it. Quite a few in lowland Ireland like her - said to be a plain, speckled face type .
You know what works great? -- big Fiskars Craft Scissors from Walmart. They don't seem to get dull.
I hope to join this select group of video hand shearers soon. But meantime, did you see the video from Moroco and especially the one from Kea Greece. All 3 of you seem to have something in common: take your time, and Get Comfortable!
Just got round to viewing the videos you mention thanks. Think I'd copy the guy sitting on the sac. Proud hand shearer ! - a German man asked if we had no electricity in Ireland yet :)
Hey, Catherine & Paul & Oisin & Hudson Rua & Divine the ewe (?), this's Wotgruf the Druid here! Great video feed! Almost unbelievable "Afro" on that girl. Whoa. Nice to see you all again. Keep on shearin'! And, best wishes, always! "Saoirse agus Anam!"

;) Actually, I haven't been able to get them sheared yet -- but it's also been QUITE chilly at night, so they've appreciated the extra warmth.
None of the local stores carry much of anything for sheep, so I'll have to order everything online anyway. Thanks for letting me know. :)

I wish everyone sheared their sheep like you!
So careful not to cut them, and the sheep looks very content.
Well done!!
