  • They probably didn't know what good sknv was and they just needed to sing somthing.

  • LOL; this was funny. I love the Lord and all, but I was rollin' on this cause I can identify. Going to church (Baptist that is) with my grandparents (down in tha kuntry) and other relatives in the south they do this. Please Lord don't get me.

  • When one person says a line then the church sings it is called TRACKING. It was done for the other members of the congregration who can't read. As for the moaning and groaining is the STYLE of singing negro spirituals. This style is a indicate their out pouring of grief and burden. It is still done in churches today that are closer to their roots

  • i don't no what church you was at

  • There's a similarity with the responses on the prokeimenon and alleluia verses, but in the traditionalist churches its still practiced for the tropars and what I call processionals.

  • Photini, it's kind of what we do before the Epistle now days except we just sing back the first line. Don't you think?

  • the chants and tropars and canons were to be inscribed to the heart to keep the heart humble and tuned into the spiritual... watchoo think? (Sorry, going all GloZell on you -- she's funny, decent, sober, candid, and funny)

  • I believe she has the gist of it, for it was explained to me that since the congregation didn't all have books (in fact fuddling with books was frowned upon as bringing in distraction and judgment and self-consciousness and arrogance and officiousness to worship) or no one could read, the worshippers were lead by the psaltis or protopsaltis in the singing,

  • pt 3 (low and staccato line feed: Vasilisa tou kosmo ... (then we sing the line), Despina ... (etc.) Glozell wondered and asked for feedback if any churches still do this, but I didn't want to spam her with Orthodoxy rig...ht away without checking with my friends ;D -- and she speculated it came from slavery days.

  • pt 2 Ask Fr Moses Berry out of Kansas about it. Anyway, since I hate retyping here's the cut, copy and paste: "I'm a fan of Glozell (Is you okay?) But I wanted to share this one because it reminded me of chanter stand/congregational singing I heard in some Old Calendar churches in Greece ...

  • Is you okay, Glozell? Is you? Good. My name's Photini and I'm a fan ... I just heard this and thought I'd share my 'share video post' I put on my facebook status ... it's really old school church, I mean really old, like Ancient Christianity and the slaves may have kept that when they were imported from Africa ...

  • Haha

  • hhhhheeeeeyyyy we still do that lol

  • I kinda like the sound of it..haha

  • glorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry.meba mebal meatball

  • glorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry.meba mebal meatball

  • This is so funny and ironically, when I was a little girl I would ask my mom, are they going to sing the moaning and groaning song at church. I never got the concept I always thought it was the same song every time.

  • Yes churches stills do that. My church does it.

  • LOOOL

  • It sounds like cats with bagpipes....

  • omg i love this video almost as much as the cilantro video lol i love your videos so much.

  • Oh Lawd have mercy! LOL

  • You are the funniest person I Know! love all your videos!

  • Yeah they even teach about that in any ethnomusicology class ever.

  • we still do dat at y church lol

  • Yup we do it in d south in black churchez

  • Chile.... this is the worse shape singing I have ever heard. But I'm still laughing

  • I have! I'm not sure if they still do cause alot of those people have passed on or have left but maybe - its in a small town in North Cak ! ;)

  • wow...this was probably one of my favorite videos. I was crying I was laughing so hard. It is so true though.

  • (: this is sofunnyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you sound like an old contry singer. hahha.

  • I remember briefly studying this in a music class a while back! Thanks for reminding me of it...I think it's called "lining out" and it was prevelent in the baroque period (around the 17th century). :)

  • my church does that but lol we sound just a bit better lol!

  • My son and sister makes fun of a similar song that some churchs sing during funerals.....We are Christians..so this is not an anti christian or church thing...It is just that we don't know WHAT in the WORLD the words are to the song..In fact they are not words..its just a series of copperative groaning and humming........It is sort hillarious but most funerals are not the same without it..the really funny part of the whole thing is to watch people who actually pretend like they know the words

  • It was really popular in the 1930's .... To kill a mockingbird chapter 12 or 13 talks about it

  • There is a church I attended when I was little that did this during the time for people to bow their heads and pray and for ppl to come to the altar to beg forgiveness for their sins. I never knew what it was was called, but thanks to this vid, I do.

And yeah it does sound depressing. It had me crying even though I was too young to understand it.

  • Lol. I love all your videos Glozell. But that isn't the only church that still does it. my Godmother's church has been doing this for years and continue today with the same thing. It bores me out of my mind everytime I go there! Lol(:

  • @ glozell1 My church does this but I had no idea what it's called. It always starts like this "I love the Lord he heard my cry." And one of the deacons get down on one knee and prays. Then they ring a bell and we stand up.

  • @mykaiela YESSSSS.....It sounds like IIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNN ( The words EYE and IRON COMBINED) LOL

  • CRASH CUT!!!!! LMFAO!!!

  • sumtimes r chrch do dat it is sooo funni i dnt evn kno y doeLOL

  • Girl, the church I grew up in still does that to this day! it's a methodist church so they usually do stick with their traditions but my goodness, you trying to get uplifted in the church not depressed!

  • I'm not hating. I just cannot connect to the comic value of this vid. I'm young and I appreciate the lining of hymns as it is reflective of the enduring, against all obstacles, powerfully unique expression of worship that has emerged from the Black church. A little effort at research would have put u on to the origins of this style. What happens to us if laughter is always our bottom line. - but hey if this made some folks smile via con dios

  • I actually grew up with a church like this. The Old Regular Baptist Churches in Southern and Middle Appalachia still use this type of hymn. It started because they would only be able to afford one Hymnal per church. The Praying comes from days when everyone would pray at the same time.

  • I am from Mississippi and my church does devotion like this EVERY single Sunday!

  • I am from Mississippi and my church does devotion like this EVERY single Sunday!

  • OMG your so damn funny

    <3

  • I heard of it in To Kill A Mockingbird.

But your rendition is so much better!

  • u rock so funnie

  • haha they do this at my church and i HATE IT! i never understand wut theyre saying. theres this like 90 year old guy who always sings/moans and it looks like he fell asleep at the mic lol. i go to shiloh baptist church in mcdonough, GA...so yes they still do it...sadly

  • when my church goes to congress of christianworkers we do dis all de time its kinda annoyin

  • it's funny, but i just don't know if it's okay too laugh at how people worship God... but i love all ur other videos(:

  • The Do That Down South..... Like Mississippi! Most of the hymn they do are like that!

  • not very good sis...there are several ....alot of churches that still do this....but to all that have looked at this video...this is not a quite accurate impression...sounds much better lmbo...lol love u sis

  • HAHAH,

    you're amazing :)

  • Call and response!

  • it is called linin'...i kno that just because

  • Its because back in the slave days most blacks were illiterate so when they would go to church or have worship services those that could read would say the lines of the hymn and have the congregation repeat it. Idk why people still do it though...

  • HAHAHAH this is so hilarious!! LOVE YOU AND UR VIDEOS!! :)

  • Hey GloZell, the church I attend back home still lines hymns every first sunday at the early service. It cracks me up because I think to myself, "Sir ma'am, ma'am sir...we all can read...AND that song is in the hymnal on page 4XX...WHY are we still doing this?" It makes me sooooooooooo sleepy. But it's always the old deacons and deaconesses who lead the songs so I guess when they are no more then the tradition will end?..idk.

  • U R TOOOO FUNNY

  • i learned about this in college....it is very very strange..lol

  • My church does tht sometimes it's and old baptist church

  • some of the old traditional Babtist churches still do this, my mom's church is one...notice I said tradition.

  • it is churches still do tht....my g-ma's church does it!!! i dnt go with her..i go to another church!

  • dam yuur lips are soo sexy

  • they do that in my school but it's a mostly Caucasian catholic school

  • haha so true they still do that in my church XD

  • What kind of country western church did you go to? I was with you until started singing :)

  • @lakerfan41 Were you in a baptist church because I used to go to Baptist churches and they did that. Been a few years but I remember it.

  • Outlining was started because the whole congregation either didn't know the words, didn't have a hymnal to read them, or couldn't read the hymnal if they had one. As far as I know the practice originated in African-American churches, but you can find it from time to time in contemporary worship services (especially if the words on the projector fail) but the congregation continues in a normal singing style =)

    Brookie

  • @grenouille0419 Or if the pastor didn't have a sermon prepared. They were stalling lol! Song always ended up being 3 times as long when they do it this way.

  • lol lol lol!!!!! I'm a southern baptist lol

I'm glad we don't do that haha

    love all your vids...!!!!!!

btw I keep tryin to subscribe my iPod won't let me sorry :'(

  • hahaha. idk if they still do that in church but i read about it in to kill a mockingbird.

  • I'm sitting here eating soup, and just kinda enjoyin the video and all, and then you're like, "over and out" and the you outline the hymn and I freakin burst into laughter and bits of soup on my computer now LMAO

  • This kind of church reminds me of the ones where people fall on the ground shaking uncontrollably I feel the lord!

  • Omg!!!!

You are so funny!!!! I love your videos!!!!!

    Shame on all the haters

  • OH GIRL YES LORD YES they still do this OMG before you even said anything i knew what you were talking about. i went to a Baptist church and they did this for about 20 minutes i fell asleep...

  • mah hero

  • Wow.. My church used to just all pray out loud at the same time.. and the first time I took my friend there... He was like.. "Damn.. They're going to give God an aneurism ." LOL!!

  • cats&bagpipes ahaha. you're amazing(:

  • Hilarious!!!!!!!! :D :D

  • yeah it's from slave times. lmao nice hymn guh

  • you got it....you got it

  • Ahhhhahahahh the wig in the back!! thats my momma's room

  • lol it got started because one not everyone knew who to read and two they didn't have enough hymn books for everyone so one person who did know how to read would say the line and the church would sing it.

  • yes my old church that i went to was baptist and they still sing it they sung I heard the Lord and Heard my Cry

  • popped a vessel laughing! SMileyD

  • we shout in our church im pentecastal like if u dont know wat it is go to one and we believe in the holy ghost and its great i luv being pentecastal :)!!

  • i favorite all ur videos! xD

  • @nooberville9656 THANKS SO MUCH

  • Bahahahah, this is SO funny :D

  • Well not everybody could read so they had to have a reader. And they were sad and tired. Father I stretch my hands to thee is a better song to do that way and yes Ive seen it still done in traditional baptist churches still

  • @KENNYBOO504

  • My grandfather was a preacher, and his church used to do this.

  • I still find this scary

  • I don't go to church anymore.
