  • At what psi are you shooting that paint?

And is primer suppose to be sanded down after a few 2 good coats of primer before paint?

I am trying repaint my camaro quicksilver metallic and I'm currently replacing the rear quarter panels and well I had to sand down to metal on the edges like the flange where the spot welds are now how would I cover that up with primer and get it even with the paint on the panel already to get prep for paint ?

  • Hi Donnie - I plan on soda blasting old paint off a quarter panel, and then feathering into the sail panel to make the transition. I plan on using PPG Deltron primer/paint, which I understand is top of the line. I read that etch primer is a no-no when sandblasting (and I assume soda too). 1). what sequence would you use? epoxy, surfacer, sealer, BC/CC? 2). how do you ensure the new paints over the bare metal reach the same height (and not over) that you are feathering to on the sail panel?

  • @Amopower Epoxy primer is the superior primer for bare metal to produce adhesion. If no body work is needed, I would sand the metal with 320 grit to assure everything is ready and apply epoxy primer, base and clear. Thanks for watching!

  • In the video you said you DA sanded with 500-grit. I'm about to shoot primer but I sanded (wet) with P600 paper. Will my primer stick OK or should I go over the bodywork with P400?

    Thanks.

  • @ahawnt Anywhere from 400 to 600 will be fine. It just takes a little longer to sand with 600, but it will be fine adhesion. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for watching!

  • Hi Mr. Smith! Is diluted epoxy primer a substitute of primer sealer? all paint stores here don't have one.

  • @roldancbu Yes, epoxy can be used for sealer. It sprays on great and can be top coated with base coat. What brand of paint is available where you are at? Do they have PPG or Shopline?

  • Comment removed

  • @ButlerCollision I'm located in the Cebu Island, Philippines, no PPG or Shopline products here but I used ANZAHL because they're popular and very good product but they're quite pricey, sometimes I used reasonable priced ones(like hi-build primers 1st to 2nd coats then final coated with anzahl to max my budget). We have 3M safety equipment here, I bought 6200 respirator w/ 6006 cartridges. Sadly, in our country, car painting materials are limited.

  • Hi Mr Butler, I just have a quick question. i noticed that you use a 3M Half Mask respirator for your painting 2 pack paints. which filter combinations do you use and would suggest for home DIYers?

  • @HighPerformance7uner The 3M half mask will work fine for you. Make sure it is designed for paint. That is all we use at school. If I was painting all day every day, as a painter at a shop, an air supplied would be a better choice.

  • so all i need is a primer and the a sealer and final a base coat?

  • @angel159164 Do you have a new part you're painting?

  • @ButlerCollision yes its a front grill for my white honda civic 99 i wanna paint around it cuz its black

  • @angel159164 If the grill has paint on it, you can just sand with 400-500 grit, wash with soap and water, tack, shoot base coat, then clear coat. If the black is raw plastic, (no paint) you will need sand, wash, tack, then spray with plastic adhesion promoter, apply primer sealer, base coat, and clear coat.

  • Thanks for that i will blow over with primer and flatten then before top coat.....many thanks great videos and very helpfull to those who want to learn.

  • on old paint that is rubbed down would you prime then seal before top coat colour?

  • @neilnjack No, if the old paint is not peeling or anything, you can final sand and paint. I prefer to use sealer, but you do not have to. However, if you sand through and hit metal, you will need to primer that spot before painting.

  • Also what is your opinion of the Nason Dupont base coat paints? I used the color code PW7 on the door panel and the white doesnt match. Its a 98 Dodge Ram so maybe its faded??? Any advice on what company has quality paint that would match? Isnt there a scan tool that they use to "scan" the paint in order to mix a matching paint instead of just using color codes?

  • @theciskokidd DuPont is good paint. Nason is a cheaper paint, which works for complete paint jobs, but it is not going to match as well as the higher brands. You may also try buffing the adjacent panel to bring the gloss level up, which may help it match better.

  • @theciskokidd Yeah I ended up having to use a color gun on the panel and Ill try to blend it into the door as best I can. The paint guy did say Nason wasnt the best stuff. Thanks for the advice.

  • Im painting a fender this weekend off a dodge ram. Thats a cool frame you have that supports the fender. Any ideas what I could use at home to achieve the same idea? Thanks. Great videos!

  • @theciskokidd thanks for watching the video. We have some stands that we just built from 3/4 inch square tubing. I will try to create and post a video of some different stands we use when I get a chance. Thanks, Donnie

  • @theciskokidd I posted a video reply to this question. Check the messages to see video. Thanks for watching!

  • @ButlerCollision Thanks, I ended up just painting the fender after it was installed on the vehicle. Im glad I did too as putting the fender back on was not an easy task. I surely would have scratched the finish. =D Thanks for the videos!

  • Mr Smith, How do you handle door jams, hood and tailgate edges?

  • @smithjo4152 You can take them off and scuff them with a red scotch-bright scuff pad. 1st was and clean them with soap and water, wipe them with wax and grease remover, then scuff them. You can lay the panels on stands where the jamb is easy to get to. Then reinstall and mask the jambs off before painting the outside of the car. The only other option is to paint them while on the car, but it is hard to sand and spray around the hinges.

  • Thank you very much for your tips, they are very valuable for beginners like us.Also you are kind and very patient. thanks again. Shyaman from Australia.

  • @dadabaimusic Glad you found the video useful. Thanks for watching!

  • hey, i have a few questions that are urgent.

1-do i need to use epoxy primer if theres a few small half inch x 4 inch bare metal spots or should 2k high build primer be good for black paint

2-do i need to use a primer sealer

3-does base coat need activator(the guy at napa only recomended reducer)

remember that this car will be paint high gloss black, if that makes a difference

    thanks

  • @robertdeuce Epoxy primer is not needed for small metal spots as you described. I would use a light coat of etch primer from an aresol can before applying the surfacer though. 2) If the car is different colors (primer spots) I would recommend using sealer for color hiding. It is not required. If you have primed your entire car and blocked it out with 2k, there will not be a need to use it. Sealer is for achieving hiding (uses less paint to cover) faster and it provides adhesion.

  • @ButlerCollision hi . i want to ask you something . what is the use of primer and what is the effects . thanks

  • @StarMarvellionInSg Primer sealer is for hiding and adhesion. If you have a new fender that is black and your car is silver, it will take many coats of silver paint to prevent the fender from being darker than the car, due to the black underneath. However, by using a light grey sealer, which will cover the black, then you can spray your base, without the worry of the black showing through. Thanks for watching.

  • @robertdeuce 3) Many basecoats only use a reducer. The activator is used in the clear. I believe Martin Seniors is a 1:1 mixing ration if I remember right.

  • Thanx for the tips!!!!

  • @yahuh310 You're welcome. Thanks for watching!

  • How did you prime it and prep it, also why are the car parts off of the car? Is that a better way to paint? I dunno how to take my car parts off.

  • Hello I am new to the paint world,I am a first quarter student.Igot a question...Just for practice and paint gun manipulation.Instead of me buy expensive automotive paint to learn with.I got an old car door that i want to practice on.Can house paint be used and thinned down enough just to practice with only??????????

  • @MrQuentinalexander I don't think house paint would spray too good through a paint gun. If it is latex, you will have to reduce it with water, which may not be good for your gun if it is not set up for water. You may go in the hardware store and try some solvent paint and reduce that.

  • what is the difference in primer and sealer? what does sealer do

  • @Screammy89 Self Etching Primer and Epoxy primer is for corrosion protection and adhesion. Primer surfacer is used to fill small imperfection in body work. High build designed to be block sanded. Primer sealer is used for holler hiding. For example, if you are painting a dark color, you can use a dark sealer to help hide the primer or lighter areas. This will result in using less paint trying to achieve full hiding.

  • @ButlerCollision If i spray a car with Epoxy primer and block it. Should i spray over it with a 2k primer and block again or just go to sealer

  • @taylorb2053 You do not need to block the epoxy. You can spray your 2k primer surfacer over the epoxy, if sprayed within the window. The 2k preimer surfacer is what should be blocked.

  • @ButlerCollision Thank you. I will continue to learn more watching your videos

  • @ButlerCollision excuse me what paint to paint car?

  • @surikan1 We use PPG products. Thanks for watching!

  • hey, nice videos. one question about prepping. I was wondering how to prep primed surfaces? I go with 400-800 on the bare metal, but then after priming I only used synthetic polymer wool similar to steel wool. should it be the same as bare preping? maybe coarser or finer? thanks a lot

  • how can i purchase your instructional videos or takes some of your courses?

  • Excellent video. Thanks heaps. :-D

  • do u use your the same gun you spray surfacer with? and what is your psi

  • @WikidWDK No, primer surfacer is much thicker and requires a bigger fluid nozzle. I use a 1.3 for sealer, paint and clear. Some prefer a 1.4 with clear. Primer surfacer works best with a 1.6 to 1.8. We use about 18 to 22 psi at the gauge. BTY - If you are an collision repair students you can win a 3m Accuspray Primer Gun. Go to CollisionBlast . com to learn how. Thanks for watching!
