Phaneuf is unquestionably better. If you understand hockey, and you watch a game live, in the arena, there's no comparison. Phaneuf does everything better than Schenn. He's better with the puck, he's stronger, a better hitter, has a better shot, and is a much smarter defenceman. Schenn is a solid defenceman, Phaneuf is one of the best in the NHL.

Don't give me that "if you understand hockey" crap. Schenn is, without question, the better player. Phaneuf is way too error prone for a guy with more experience, and on too many nights looks like a big stiff. The hockey fans with a keen eye know that Schenn is the better player hands down.

Phaneuf is a better puck handler, smarter with the puck in his own zone, sees the ice better, hits better, is better in one-on-ones defensively, is stronger, and is better away from the puck. Watch a game live, in the arena, with 'a keen eye' and this is obvious. Obviously Phaneuf gets worse press. He's a much more well known, popular player. More is expected of him, so his failures are more magnified. Doesn't change that he's the best defenceman the Leafs have right now

Well he has the benefit of more experience since Schenn is like 21. But as a Leaf fan, I must say I've been very disappointed in Phaneuf. He's had some good games and gets lots of ice time, don't get me wrong. But he is very unspectacular and a very average defenceman. I now understand why Flames management and fans weren't happy.
