@DonnieGQ The 3 piano version also costs 3 times as much as Alicias keys. Alicias keys should really be put against the Italian grand from synthogy. Similar price.
Pop music is not the best for testing piano sound. Jazz or classic music, where a large variety of velocities from pianissimo to fortissimo are required, are highly suggested. Doing so would have evidentiate a huge gap between the multi velocity sampling from Ivory and the Alicia's Keys stuff. Anyway, even so, no comparison whatsoever.
@chuckdamailman I agree that they're pretty cheap, but I feel where the niggas coming from. Some people have the musical talent but just don't have the money.
Would you advize alicias keys over the three pianos that kontakt comes with when you buy komplete 7? they are New York Concert Grand, Vienna concert grand & berlin concert grand.
@MajorVision The New York Grand in Komplete 7 is horrid. It's supposed to be a NY Steinway. Unfair to compare but I have a NY Steinway downstairs that is only medium sized yet sounds 100 times bigger and better than the samples. I swear that NI went down to the local pub and found a NY Steinway and just had it tuned. The voicing is horrible. I have Alicia's Keys, too, and it's far better than the NY Grand despite the fact that the C3 Neo is only a 6 ft piano. AK need ASIO Drivers.
I would suggest playing the performance on a different piano and then use midi to map to the A.K and the Ivory so we hear them in the same manner to compare.
I've a question about ivory... it's needed a foot peadal in order to have the sustain for every note or there is an option with the software or something? Because I'm thinking of buying it but I don't have a pedal, just my old keyboard...
True comparison is difficult since they are played in different keys ? - having said that, the Ivory for me has the most natural sound, but what is that underlying "buzzy" sound, like some sort of audio aliasing or such - does that always come through on all Ivory samples ? - thanks for the post & debate.
I have both. I can honestly say Ivory is better, not only in sound, but in key touch response. It is so realistic. Alicia's Keys sound is more realistic compared to some of the other players in the field, but a huge turnoff was latency as well as the bass notes sounding horrible. You press hard and they are still so mellow while the mid notes are brighter if you press hard. And when you use the sustain pedal, the notes get mellow and quiet. After trying both, Ivory FTW.
This is a great comparison video, great audio quality! Nice job!
I personally own Alica's Keys. I think it is a fantastic piano. It does sound quite rich, but you can soften that with the right reverb. I personally use Arts Acoustic Reverb. It is fantastic!
ivory can go to fucking hell for not providing people with a free update from version 1...I havent been able to use my ivory since I switch to snow leopard.. and I had the italian grand add-on... I just got alicias keys and its my new go to piano sampler.. FUCK YOU SYNTHOGY
based on this video i would use the alicia keys for producing a modern day hit to place vocals over but i would definitely use the Ivory for live performances because it has a fuller sound...
If you want to compare Native Instruments pianos with Ivory a more accurate comparison would be with Native Instruments Classic Piano Collection which includes a Steinway D concert grand. The C3 Neo in Alicia's Keys is a 6'1" conservatory piano while the Steinway is a 9' concert grand. This is more an "apples vs oranges" comparison. The piece of music is beautiful but the C3 comes into it's own on hard driving music that can show off it's powerful bass and midranges.
It depends a lot of the user. :) It's like photography saying Nikon is better than Canon and vice versa.
For this particular interpretation I prefered the sound of Alicia's Yamaha sound. The dynamics are clearly superior on the Ivory, but it all depends of the particular setup. Also consider you can mix these tracks to optimize the desired frequencies. In the end the real battle is on the field. So technically Steinway will be the winner, unless Fazioli joins in,but not too passionate about it
Yeah, I have to call bullsh@t on this comparison: The AK example was played in a higher key, making the tone seem more unfairly more pinched/choked, whereas the Synthology example is played in a lower key, making it unfairly sound much warmer. Plus the performance for Synthology was way more expressive, again deceptively swaying people's opinions. Not cool.
@yanrad You are correct about the misleading playing. I do have to say though.. i have tried almost every piano vst out there(with the exception of "the grand 3") And Ivory is hands down the best. Of course thats just my opinion. With the right eqs and mastering they will all sound amazing in the end.
@yanrad I don't think it would have mattered...I can tell within three measures that AK lacks the velocity depth of Ivory, which may account for why it sounds less expressive. Not that I own either. Been using PMI D for years.
i have both and think ivory is better overall though this comparison is a bit misleading. the ivory sample has more bottom end going on in the EQ. AK does sound good though. it just all depends on what you're going for. i would have liked to seen a comparison between the italian grand expansion and AK. i think the difference would be very apparent.
The Ivory sounds a bit choppy to me. I don't think it was sampled as meticulously as the Alicia's Keys. Plus You need to listen to both of them with instruments. When you add drums and bass and do a full mix the Alicia's Keys stomps the Ivory out. No question.
I feel that the A.K. samples sound more realistic and warm...the ivory ones seem a tad bolder but something about them does not seem to hit my ear just right. IMO Alicias Keys wins :D
i hear the double note problem with the alicia's key that the galaxy vintage d has. could this actually be a kontakt player issue? when the same note is played twice at a different volume sometimes the second note replaces the first completely causing an abrupt jump in volume.
@Amphousepro Ivory ships with 3 pianos while Alicia Keys only has one. Ivory is around 300$, AK is like less than a 100$. I would say Alicia Keys would be a better buy than Ivory 1.64(version in this video), but the Ivory II has addressed things not addressed before like sympathetic resonance, half-pedalling etc. I haven't tested Ivory II the current version out, you may like Ivory more.
both good, but i like the synthology better for this piece, sounds like it has better articulation and the natural harmonics of the piano sound real to me. That said it is mostly a case of what suits what you want for the project. i am getting them both. i think that for solo piano id go with the synthology but for supporting harmony's and cords to sit down in the mix i would probably go with Alicia's keys.
Good sound ,will my intel windows 7 dual core 2.2 ghz 5400 rpm laptop run Synthogy Ivory II and im using a external M audio fast track pro.Or do i need a powerful desk top Pc.
Ivory sounds richer and warmer. Will Ivory use too much RAM? I've owned Ivory but use up all my computer resource and require too much programming on it. I finally switched to Alicia's Keys, and I think I don't need program a lot but still sounds fantastic. Even I play Alicia's Keys with my LASS together, still smooth.

@bpanmusic001 Ivory uses more RAM in my case, but I get better latency than with Alicia's Keys. Still I love both and use them both depending on the song I play.
@mavs972 also whats the song. thats real nice.. I got this program yesterday.. but i lost my damn pedal.. on true pianos i could just set the release high. do you know how to make it sound always pedaled
Alicia's Keys is clearly better for the king of music played in this demo because of its delicate sound. But if you were demoing a piece of music from the "1812 Overture" then Ivory would suit that type of music .
alicia's keys are more suited for this style of music. Why? Because it has just the right amount of lightness and nuances for the song, while being deep and beautiful. Listening to this software's playing this particular song is like listening to a lullaby. The steinberg D is also great for this song. However it would be better for a song that needs more power and needs to be more majestic. For this song, it makes it sound beautiful and enchanting. However it does not have the delicacy needed.
I used Ivory for a year... But since i'm not playing classical music, i changed to alicia's keys, which is nearly perfect for my needs! I still miss the perfect synth options in Ivory!
I have been using akoustik piano and im loving it. I would imagine any of the high-end piano plugins are good depending on your preference. I really want to try the grand 3 though
my immediate impression listening from Alicia's Keys to Ivory was that Ivory was dull and does not work as well.. then as i listened further to Ivory i realized it sounded more like a live recording of a a piano than Alicia's Keys.. that's when i felt a little confused.. now- several days later- i understand it.. Alicia's Keys plays and sounds more like a musical instrument that you are connected with.. i suspect Alicia's Keys will work best for me..
appart from being pink plugins.....i must say that im impress with alicia keys....somewhow it come more in the sound capture that in the piano character i find the sound capture of the alicia keys superior to the one of synthogy.....it is more a finished product i guess they use compression en eq on it so when you played it it sound like being on a record to me...synthogy sound more live.
i'm just installing the new Ivory Grand 2.0 now and its 77gigs (11 DVD's) If you don't have the resources or space, i'd go for Native Instruments Alicia Key's
@mavs972 hows the weight on it.. i was at the store and hated every weighted one i could find.. m audio was terrible.. need a good feel not something cheap
I recently tried the "Italian Grand" add-on for Ivory, which I believe is based on a beautiful Fazioli. Overall, I would say that this is technically the best capture of all four major pianos I have tried (all three in ivory, and Alicia's keys), and there are very few faults (although the high end rings a little). The piano is a little bottom heavy and dark, for my tastes, but in my opinion obsoletes Alicia's Keys almost entirely. I prefer the Bosendorfer with +4.00 key noise tonally.
I'm thinking about grabbing Alicia's Keys. I have Ivory 1.5... Can't wait for the demos of Ivory 2.0. Ivory 2.0 will have 18 velocity layers (up from 10) and Alicia's Keys has 14... I also like some things about Akoustik Piano (love that old upright... lots of character) With me, it depends on the track I'm working on... software prices are so low that I wnanna grab em all for their individual strengths.. Great video!!!! love the warmth of Alicia's Keys can't beat it for 100 bucks
I'm thinking of grabbing Alicia's Keys... already have Ivory 1.5... can't wait to here the demos of Ivory 2.0 I also have Akoustik Piano. I really like the old upright preset on Akoustik Piano. I like the warmth of Alicia's Keys. Also can't wait to see Alicia's keys vs Ivory 2.0 being that the new Ivory will have 18 velocity layers... Technology has progressed quite a bit since the first Ivory came out. I'm wondering what the new Scarbee piano updates from Akoustik Piano sound like
i think in this example here the alicia keys piano sounds better, the highs are more defined, but thatsjust my opinion..btw i got the ivory and its really hard to tweak a great sounds out of it,but i have to take more time to figure it out i guess..kinda undecided now if i shall also go for the alicia keys one...
Also, if you'll forgive me making a large number of comments, there's like a delay in string damping for the entire lower octave in Alicia's keys which makes it very unpleasant to listen to. They all do it to, which is really odd..
@ihasmario I never noticed that, do you own any other piano library to compare it too. I really enjoy Alicia's Keys, (used in my latest video, Ivory's Steinwey D is very nice, the Italian Grand sounds awesome as well. I used to use Reason Pianos but I can't make it too work on my new computer which uses Windows 7. Sounds good too. I've tried the Akoustik Piano(doesn't sound good to my ears), and The Grand 2 (decent).
@mavs972 Not of this quality. I'll compare it to Ivory 2 when I have it (should be about a week). The problem with staccato in the lower octaves is probably not audible on most setups or in a mix so its not really much of a problem unless you plan to do solo pieces, but I personally find it an issue when using better speakers or even headphones. I personally expect Ivory 2 to be more of a professional job given the price, but I think that it certainly wont replace the darkness of alicia's.
@ihasmario Hopefully you could post a demo, it was supposed to be released spring and it's been delayed, I would like to hear your thoughts to see if it's worth the upgrade.
@mavs972 My copy of ivory has been delayed, unfortunately. I've actually spent a good few days with my friends copy of ivory 1.5 and can say that its a whole lot more playable IMO than alicia's keys. It adds a weight behind the keyboard and makes it feel much closer to the real thing. I'd say 1.5 is almost perfect other than the harmonics dont ring (which is going to be addressed in 2) and the E above high C's keynoise cant be cancelled and is louder than the rest of the board.
@ihasmario There's also a fault with the Ivory VSTi down the low end as well, but it's far less annoying and obvious than that on Alicia's Keys. There's a slight "clip" sound as the keys are pushed (eg C two octaves below middle C), and a slight buzz as the key is released (suggesting the hammer isnt damping the string perfectly straight away).
Still, they're both very good, but I think overall the ivory definitely has it for me
The ivory has more body overall while in its current setting (it looks like you have reverb on for the Ivory and not Alicia's Keys), while Alicia's keys is more crisp.
One sounds like a studio job and the other in an auditorium. Ivory sounds more "pure"
@ihasmario I also find that C5 (I think or it might be C6) has a piercing quality that... doesnt suit the rest of the keybed (it actually can be played agressively and is quite bright. The keynoise (a sort of deep "clank") is too loud up the upper register and sounds too much like you're inside the piano, rather than in the audience or even at the piano.
@ihasmario To be fair you can adjust the key noise in both programs but the actual Yamaha C3 Neo (Which Alicia's Keys is based off) does actually have a unique sound especially up in the high notes. Keep in mind it's only 1 preset of each.
@mavs972 Yeah definitely. Overall I find the piano far too dark, though but Alicia mentions that in the promo for the soundset. It suits some tracks brilliantly, but it's almost like a one trick pony for me unfortunately. Still, it's a good buy for 100USD
The Alcia's Keys is by far the better of the two in my opinion. I will order it tomorrow. I have never heard software nail an acoustic piano in such an organic natural way. I am thrilled that this technology is possible.
@patrox247 They both sound great in their own way, and I use them depending on the style. I practice on Ivory tho, Alicia's Keys is a bigger resource hog.
NVM, i go with ivory, sounds full. and although AK is cleaner, you can tweak ivory to sound like that, and you have 3 pianos to do it with.

Alicia's Keys plays and sounds more like a musical instrument that you are connected with.. i suspect Alicia's Keys will work best for me..

appart from being pink plugins.....i must say that im impress with alicia keys....somewhow it come more in the sound capture that in the piano character i find the sound capture of the alicia keys superior to the one of synthogy.....it is more a finished product i guess they use compression en eq on it so when you played it it sound like being on a record to me...synthogy sound more live.

this might be a dumb question but do you get some of your influence from Nobuo Uematsu? He is a real genius and you really have that style I love

i'm just installing the new Ivory Grand 2.0 now and its 77gigs (11 DVD's) If you don't have the resources or space, i'd go for Native Instruments Alicia Key's

scrawfrd02 1 year ago
@scrawfrd02 They're good , full weighted keys, Im no expert but have compared it to the 88es(199$) M audio and also hated the semi weighted keys.

I'm wondering what the new Scarbee piano updates from Akoustik Piano sound like

both are too perfect. they probably autotune every single sample. use something that sounds less midi like imperfect samples pianos, much better
billevansful 1 year ago
i think in this example here the alicia keys piano sounds better, the highs are more defined, but thatsjust my opinion..btw i got the ivory and its really hard to tweak a great sounds out of it,but i have to take more time to figure it out i guess..kinda undecided now if i shall also go for the alicia keys one...

Both of these sound great. I liked the ambience of the Alicia's Keys version better for the song but that's just personal preference.

ivory forced me to buy another hdd, was it worth it? not really, i rather just record a piano myself, but Alicia's keys is surprisingly good
kingkazmapower 1 year ago
please advice...which one should i install?synthogy ivory 1.5 or alicia's keys?
synthogy is 40 gb and i do not see that it is better than native alicia's.
thanks ! keep dreaming and make music ♪

Alicia's Keys won!

Another problem I found with the 'dorfer is the upper octaves don't mute (they sort of sustain on a staccato note). The Second highest G for example.
Still, it's very much my favourite of the four pianos I have now.
Apologies for comment bombing your page

I FOUND IVORY..... not great in response.. something NOT right... i had all three. sold them...... my yamaha S70 was more responsive........
too much tweaking to find the right piano..... alicias keys are amazing.. and cheap (inexpensive)

Alicia wins... but bouth great plugins
luiswega 1 year ago
Also, if you'll forgive me making a large number of comments, there's like a delay in string damping for the entire lower octave in Alicia's keys which makes it very unpleasant to listen to. They all do it to, which is really odd..
ihasmario 1 year ago
@ihasmario I never noticed that, do you own any other piano library to compare it too. I really enjoy Alicia's Keys, (used in my latest video, Ivory's Steinwey D is very nice, the Italian Grand sounds awesome as well. I used to use Reason Pianos but I can't make it too work on my new computer which uses Windows 7. Sounds good too. I've tried the Akoustik Piano(doesn't sound good to my ears), and The Grand 2 (decent).
mavs972 1 year ago
@mavs972 Not of this quality. I'll compare it to Ivory 2 when I have it (should be about a week). The problem with staccato in the lower octaves is probably not audible on most setups or in a mix so its not really much of a problem unless you plan to do solo pieces, but I personally find it an issue when using better speakers or even headphones. I personally expect Ivory 2 to be more of a professional job given the price, but I think that it certainly wont replace the darkness of alicia's.
ihasmario 1 year ago
@ihasmario Hopefully you could post a demo, it was supposed to be released spring and it's been delayed, I would like to hear your thoughts to see if it's worth the upgrade.
mavs972 1 year ago
@mavs972 My copy of ivory has been delayed, unfortunately. I've actually spent a good few days with my friends copy of ivory 1.5 and can say that its a whole lot more playable IMO than alicia's keys. It adds a weight behind the keyboard and makes it feel much closer to the real thing. I'd say 1.5 is almost perfect other than the harmonics dont ring (which is going to be addressed in 2) and the E above high C's keynoise cant be cancelled and is louder than the rest of the board.
ihasmario 1 year ago
@ihasmario There's also a fault with the Ivory VSTi down the low end as well, but it's far less annoying and obvious than that on Alicia's Keys. There's a slight "clip" sound as the keys are pushed (eg C two octaves below middle C), and a slight buzz as the key is released (suggesting the hammer isnt damping the string perfectly straight away).
Still, they're both very good, but I think overall the ivory definitely has it for me
ihasmario 1 year ago
@ihasmario What Ivory Keyset did you try?
mavs972 1 year ago
@mavs972 I was using the bossendorfer
ihasmario 1 year ago
The ivory has more body overall while in its current setting (it looks like you have reverb on for the Ivory and not Alicia's Keys), while Alicia's keys is more crisp.
One sounds like a studio job and the other in an auditorium. Ivory sounds more "pure"
ihasmario 1 year ago
@ihasmario I also find that C5 (I think or it might be C6) has a piercing quality that... doesnt suit the rest of the keybed (it actually can be played agressively and is quite bright. The keynoise (a sort of deep "clank") is too loud up the upper register and sounds too much like you're inside the piano, rather than in the audience or even at the piano.
ihasmario 1 year ago
@ihasmario To be fair you can adjust the key noise in both programs but the actual Yamaha C3 Neo (Which Alicia's Keys is based off) does actually have a unique sound especially up in the high notes. Keep in mind it's only 1 preset of each.
mavs972 1 year ago
@mavs972 Yeah definitely. Overall I find the piano far too dark, though but Alicia mentions that in the promo for the soundset. It suits some tracks brilliantly, but it's almost like a one trick pony for me unfortunately. Still, it's a good buy for 100USD

The Alcia's Keys is by far the better of the two in my opinion. I will order it tomorrow. I have never heard software nail an acoustic piano in such an organic natural way. I am thrilled that this technology is possible.
patrox247 1 year ago
@patrox247 They both sound great in their own way, and I use them depending on the style. I practice on Ivory tho, Alicia's Keys is a bigger resource hog.
