I just finished the book, and in the book they speculate that the reason Ricky, in real life, carved 'i'm a prositute and proud of it' into Sylvia's flesh, was because people think Ricky and Gertrude had a sexual relationship, and sex was used to bribe Ricky into hurting Sylvia. >_<

Gertrude saw the pregnancy test for Paula and she still told the Pastor that it was Sylvia who was pregnant.
Not only that, but this story doesn't exactly follow what really happened because in the movie, Paula feels bad for Sylvia and asks Gertrude to stop punishing her, but in real life Paula didn't like Sylvia up to her death.
