My Grandfather was a cook on the big canoe for twenty five years ... To see this video just put a smile on my face , and reminded me of the many times I went on her and the many times I would wait for him to finish his shift .. My Father was a deckhand on the Chi-Cheemaun in the early 90's.. He was also a deckhand on the Nindawayma which was the sister ship of the Chi-Cheemaun.. The Nindawayma was decommissioned in 2007 and is (last I heard) docked in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

In the Ojibwa language, Chi-Cheemaun means "Big Canoe" and Nindawayma means "Little Sister"

@jscrimshaw1 yes I haven't heard much about the Nindawayma at all anymore...my parents travelled to Purvis's to take pictures of it ...Could be a barge by now...I rode on it a couple of times ... the one time was really rough....seemed to handle the rough weather better then the cheech did

Wow, I grew up with this ship and I still love it. I work on it now during the summer. I couldn't think of any thing better then sailing off into a nice orange sunset with beautiful Manitoulin under neath it. Almost makes me cry.

@ManIhTwoLinJay I haven't been across on the cheech in a couple of years now. I have known a few that have worked on her. I have moved my interest and am a founding member SS Norisle Society.....that old girl will steam again sooner then you think

Great vid! I was born in Ontario and just rode the Chi Cheemaun for the first time last week! It's a lot bigger than it looks in the vids!! Great ride!!
