  • This is not a mass appeal type of voice. It is a good solid tenor voice. one you won't mind listening to. I dont think you will forget the others like Gedda, Krause. and the like, but you will be satisfied.

  • He is not Luciano Pavarotti.Carlo Bergzoni or any other tenor .he is Joseph Calleja with a great tenor voice, please just enjoy his singing. If you look too deply at the ins and outs of his style/technique you lose the quality,CHILL

  • It is all a matter of personal opinion and personal taste. That is what I love about the internet and especially, YouTube, it gives you access to a vast amount of musical material and you can hear examples of legendary singer and up and coming singers. We all have our likes and dislikes and to me Joseph Calleja gives a good performance as an Operatic tenor to you he sings flat and has technical problems .One man's trash is another's treasure. We can agree to disagree. Happy Holidays to you.

  • @intelegentable

That's also what I like about YouTube.

I just want to say this correctly: technical problems & flatness are scientifically verifiable facts and are NOT a matter of personal opinion, & Callejas does, beyond all arguing & matters of taste, sing with scientifically verifiable flatness.

This is not a personal attack & I'm sure he & you are both good people, I just hate it when people describe black & white facts as if they're interpretive. Happy Holidays to you as well.

  • Bravo - closest thing I've heard to Pavarotti in quite a while.

  • instead of criticising so much about this thing and the other why don't you just enjoy?

  • I'm impressed to see how many ¨experts¨ on singing technique we have here! If Joseph Calleja has triggered so many critical comments by specialised opera ¨critics¨this is a sign that he does not go unnoticed. There must be something to his singing that causes so much stir....

  • strong / young voice . the new Carlo Bergonzi !!

  • Wow, a lot of cruel, mean-spirited people here who are self-proclaimed experts on voices. Every voice mentioned Caruso Gedda Kraus Wunderlich Bjoerling et al had DIFFERENT VOICES - TIMBRES - RANGES, etc etc. Let's enjoy EACH for their own merits instead of belittling them and writing humiliating discourses about WHO was the best or the worst. How infantile, indeed.

  • @cubanbach

There is trash-talking on the internet, and it's not gonna stop. That happens in a public space where anyone can post opinions in anonymity.

I dislike it because it's not in tune, and because of the flutter. Flat singing is a technical issue, and vocal flutter is a result of dysfunctional approximation of the cords and an incorrect flow-pressure ratio of air passing over those cords. Neither of these relate to range or timbre. I'm not an expert, but these are physiological facts.

  • @jaketaz Joseph Calleja has a great sound and is one of the most successful and sought after Tenors on the scene today. All singers have their peculiarities, eccentricities and all voices have their flaws, the brilliant singers learn how to disguise them, Mr. Calleja emits a brilliant and gorgeous sound, if he can last rmains to be seen but of what I hear of him I am loving the voice andd his technique.

  • @intelegentable

I believe that you love "the voice andd his technique". That's a personal opinion & has nothing to do with me. "Brilliant" & "gorgeous" are adjectives that depend entirely on personal taste, and I personally do not like Callejas' sound. Adjectives like "flat" & "fluttery" are not personal opinions, as Callejas sings flat and has a flutter. His success doesn't matter to me, Britney Spears has much more money and fame, and that says nothing about her singing ability.

  • @jaketaz Comparing joseph Calleja with Britney Spears is (in Maltese) nthallat il-hass mal-bass. Try and find a translator for this saying.

  • @marybubuann

I used Britney Spears because she is very popular and a bad singer. Success and popularity are a measure of mass appeal, not of ability.

  • Iuch prefer 'The Other Guy"

  • Beautiful color of the voice ( although monochromatic ) but the vibrato is too quick .

  • The Domingo versus Pavarotti argument is ridiculous too. Yes we all know he started as a baritone, and we all know that he has returned to singing baritone. If he was ever truly a tenor, he wasn't a high one. He never sang well in any role that had a high tessitura, and there is NO recorded instance of him singing a solid in-tune high b flat, b, or c. Look at the clips online, they are all bad. He will always be known for his stage manner and charisma, not his singing.

  • @jaketaz You obviously have some strong opinions but before you post things for the world to see you really should filter some of what you say as much of it is inaccurate. Domingo WAS a tenor. Anyone who knows a shred about opera will tell you that. And there ARE wonderful recordings of him singing glorious B flats and B's. Sure his C was not great or was practically non existent. Domingo will ALWAYS be known for his singing.

  • @TheBiggestFan32752

Look at the idiotic comments on this site. I clearly do NOT have to filter what I say.

All of what I said is accurate, depending on who is reading it. People who enjoy opera will disagree, and people who know how to sing will agree. With research, you will discover that Domingo had other people record his high notes for him in many instances, it is a commonly known fact among singers. If you have a LIVE clip where he sings an easy, in-tune b-flat or b, recommend it to me.

  • People aren't demanding enough of their performers. I realize they are different voice types, but Gedda, Pavarotti, Kraus Wunderlich, Langridge, Bjoerling and the other greats didn't sing flat, so why do we allow it now? And this flutter Calleja has at such a young age, lack of depth in the tone, the pressure he sings with that pushes the final note flat, and his incredible awkwardness on stage. He is not in a league with any of the greats, nor will he be any time soon.

  • Pavarotti the tenor who sold most records and Cd's in history,

    made the most money,

    the longest curtain calls ect.

    Why? Because Domingo was better??

  • He always sounds like a cross between a billy goat in heat and a braying donkey with an uncontrolled vibrato.

  • @jplaura02 that is only part of what makes him distinct, am looking forward to his Pinkerton in Houston this month.

  • Muy bueno el tenor Callejas

  • I'm not a fan of Pavorotti and believe that he was very good, but over rated. I think that Domingo is better as a tenor than Pavorotti was..he has a fuller voice and darker timbre.. you know he started out as a baritone. Di Stefano is good, but not in the league of who I mentioned in my comments. There are many very good tenors, but few great ones.

  • @Erdrick345 That's because he was a different type of tenor than Domingo. That doesn't make Pavarotti a lesser tenor. As a matter of fact, most would agree that Pavarotti's technique was far superior than Domingo.

  • @Erdrick345 Domingo better TENOR than Pavarotti? wow... things that can be read here...

  • @Erdrick345

Di Stefano wasn't in the same league? Yes, he is of course in the higher league.

  • Well, Calleja is certainly a very fine tenor, probably the best on the scene with Villazon and Ramos being the two other fine tenors of today. I'm surprised that 79682 forgot to add Bjoerling, Schipa, and Caruso to his list of historically great tenors.

  • @Erdrick345 Yes I'm surprised too! very fine tenors, all you mentioned

  • @Erdrick345 also u both forgot Di Stefano and Pavarotti esp. in Boheme

  • @Erdrick345

    Ramos =Ramon Vargas???

  • @Erdrick345 I'm also keeping my eyes on Lawrence Brownlee because I think he has great potential. Piotr Beczala has to be added into the mix too. As for Villazon, he's good and popular, but I just don't think that he's one of the top

  • I am so in love!

  • Prosit sinjur!

  • non è che mi interessa molto ascoltare un cantante di questo genere e non credo sia una questione di registrazioni, dato che ne manipolo centinaia al mese...

  • Far better than any other tenor on the Metropolitan Stage, but he should listen to Gigli, Lemeshev, Thill, Crooks, JSchmidt, DiLugo

  • Absolutely magnificent!

  • niente di speciale.... voce piccola e tremante

  • Avete sentito mai questa voce in tensione? Non è certamente piccola. Molti sono in disaccordo con voi che la voce è " niente special".

  • Sei Italiano? Dove l'hai sentito e in quale opera?

  • La voce ne e piccola ne tremante. Questa registrazione e orrenda. Senti la stessa cosa su un altro video che include anche il visivo.
