Nice video, I'll have to try the ice bath idea. I usually just drain the hot water from the pot then fill it back up with cold water before I clean them. I just caught a couple of beautiful Dungeness crabs tonight in Mukilteo, Washington. You can see them above in my video response to this video.
Great Vid!!! You can tell the Crabs arn't being boiled dead for a start look at the shell colour (dumb ass) here in the UK we normally "chill" our lobster & crab if we can before boiling it alive! and as Skubafran says it helps to keep them intact.
PART TWO: To answer your criticism: The crab are not dead, In my years of experience I found that placing the crab in a freezer 30 min prior to cooking them slows down their movement tremendously. This ensures that they do not move too much when placed in the boiing water, resulting in ALL of their legs and claws being intact after cooking, rather than broken limbs. The ice bath at the end cools the meat quickly stopping the meat from overcooking and poorly prepared crab. And mayonaise..yuck
@skubafran ; hey francis, i know they have this video on your memorial page, i miss you bud and this video always makes me laugh! RIP playboy keep it real wherever you are

Why is this guy cooking DEAD crabs? They are supposed to be LIVE when you cook them. And why does he place them in ice water? He probably eats them with mayonaise, too!
Ok, so it sounds like you know a bit about crabs so I won't give you too hard of a time...When I originally made the video it had subtitles explaining what was going on as it happened. Unfortunately when I loaded it on Youtube the explanations did not appear. Further more the video was automatically fitted to the song which resulted in it repeating twice to the entire song rather than once to the segment of the song that I chose to use. This ruined all of the timing and work I put into it.
awesome video and the music is great with it too... =)) thank you for sharing...

question: in maryland we steam our crabs, can I steam dugeness crabs the same way as the blue crab?

Two things.
First, I find Dungeness Crab to taste better precleaned then cooked. Just something to try sometime. The meat stays nice and white.
Second, to those of you who use the term "crabs", crabs is an STD. We eat crab!
Have a nice day.

@hotvampire69 Actually, dead crabs look the same as live crabs, color wise. They turn red when you cook them. (Dumb ass), LOL!

No problem, I'm just pulling your chain. But yes, I spent 1/2 a lifetime catching, cooking and cleaning crabs at SF's Wharf.
Nice vid, by the way.
