Afro Hair has the most protein bonds layers than any other hair. More coily means more bonds. So this would make afro hair the strongest hair.Afro hair is not fragile, when it is treated properly.It is only fragile when dry.
I would be careful with frequent shampooing (however I do wash my hair once week or 5 days). Its a matter of hydration. Many people with long hair hydrate with water frequently, same with those co-washers with long hair. Be careful when comparing afro textured hair with straight Asian hair, their hair isn't prone to breakage and dryness like ours which can be exacerbated with improper shampooing.
You are correct (for me frequent shampooing is once a week at times twice depending on products I've used). It all depends on the head of hair (texture, oil production, Length, etc.). And yes Afro texture is most fragile of textures so it should be treated as such & hydration is very important. Thanks for your input. :-)
@1ManeTamed Yes, that's very true. And like you, once or twice a week is my normal shampoo schedule, which I find to be frequent enough for most afro-textured hair. My only comparison (to Asian hair) was the idea that a clean scalp responds with excellent growth, no matter what the texture. With the charachter limits, its not always possible to share everything in one shot, but again you are right. Products, tools, technique and patience are all key to healthy hair sans breakage and dryness.
Hi Sera, thanks for your videos. Have u ever put braids in your hair? How often do you wash during that time? How do u wash it? I put braids in my hair now as a means of protective hair style and i wash it within the first week because i could see flake on my scalp; so now i am wondering how often shd i wash it or can i use baking soda with conditioner to just clean the scalp (do u think that would be good enough?)
YOUR HAIR IS BEAUTIFUL!!!! You can get shea butter on Ebay for 5LB $16.50 S&H $10.00 10LB $30.00 S & H $15.00.There are other sizes also.They also carry mango,cocoa butter and oils too. @Sera2544Amen, sister Sera. This seems to be the common denominator with all the sisters I know who have (what WE would consider SUPER-long) long hair: FREQUENT shampooing. I have always been one who cannot go longer than 1 week without shampooing and conditioning. Usually, every 3-4 days is the norm. Ask our Asian sisters...
the ones who grow the hair we buy. They shampoo frequently and their hair responds by GROWING. ;D
have you experinced your hair feelin squeeky clean when you only use shampoo, do you condition your hair at all after washing? Or do you just wash it w/ shampoo and then a leave in conditioner?
No, not at all, I stay away from shampoos that give my hair a squeeky clean feeling. Now, if I were to do a clarifying treatment then that's usually expected & I offset it by doing a deep conditioning treatment afterwards.
I NEVER go without conditioning my hair after shampooing. Conditioner is an absolute MUST for my hair. Sometimes I use a leave-in conditioner, but for the most part I just use my Shea Butter & Castor oil to seal my ends after washing (& conditoning) my hair. HTH :-)
I use shea butter for my hair too but I find myself having problems washing it out of my hair unless i clarify.....is the shea butter the reason why you shampoo your hair and not co wash it?
For some reason, I don't have a problem washing out Shea butter unless am heavy-handed with it. I would have to say even prior to discovering Shea butter I had to shampoo because co-wash just did not work well for me - my scalp was too oil/grimmy for my comfort, so that's why I prefer using shampoo for most of my washes.
you're so modest, beautiful inside and out. i haven't seen many 4bs with long natural textured hair so this debunks all the myths and stereotypes. you rock. now that i know its possible, i am going to go for it.
I love shea butter also. I use it everyday for body & hair. Have you ever tried honey in your hair? It's a great humectant. Sometimes I'll add some to my conditioner or put it in my hair as a leave-in with the shea butter.
Your hair is insane. Love it! I also love you simple approach to haircare. You mentioned how you do prep work on Friday before washing your hair on Saturday if you're not deep conditioning. Is the prep work a "pre-poo" with oils? If so, what type of oils do you use and is it left in overnight?
Sera, you have given me the courage to chop off these relaxed ends. I think I've done well for the last 15 months-enough of the struggle..I want to show my twists already!! Black women are so beautiful with the discovery and embracing of natural hair textures.
finally i get to see the face behind the hair :o) you have been my inspiration on fotki for awhile now... thanks for being willing to share your tips with us... you most definately have been a blessing! Love from Bermuda
I noticed that you didn't show your shrinkage/post-washing state...Just wondering, with maximum shrinkage, does your hair touch your shoulders? I think that's going to be my length limit. If my hair reaches my shoulders with maximum shrinkage, its time to trim so that it doesn't. I'd LOVE maximum shrinkage to just above my shoulders if my hair were long. It's the perfect situation. It's really long, yet for wet set twists/twist outs, it doesn't touch your clothes and/or dry out!

How often do you wash your hair?
bubblestc001 1 year ago
@bubblestc001
1-2 times a week
Sera2544 1 year ago
@Sera2544 So if you wash 1 - 2 times per week, how do you keep the hair stretched? I would have thought it would really shrink up every time.
ananse77 9 months ago
@ananse77
I braid/rebraid &sometimes band my hair to stretch it. Hope that makes sense.
Sera2544 9 months ago
@Sera2544 Yes, it makes sense. But with all that hair, how can you braid and rebraid and/or band once or twice a week. Wow, that's a lot of work.
