  • @greenyDino You do realize that this film was based on a book, right? Albeit non-fiction. Good idea, great film, but an adaptation nonetheless.

  • that's really cool that matt groening of the simpsons fame loves this particular film as one of his favorites.

i first saw him in the film angel on my shoulder which i then had to have in my collection. now i'm going to be adding this film to my classic film collection, too!

paul muni is a very good actor!

  • fantastic movie, deserves its place in the national library. I saw it a few months back on TCM when Matt Groening was showing his favorite films.

  • This film will blow you away with it's social impact and Muni's acting. The guy was in a class of his own. It's a true story dramatized a bit since James Allen was still a fugitive at the time of it's making. It led to prison reform and the end of the southern 'chain gang' system which was absolutely brutal.

Muni consulted with the real fugitive James Allen whose story this was. He told Allen 'I dont want to act 'like' you. I want to BE you!

  • THAT is great acting, wanting to BE the person he is portraying, not act like that person - thanks for sharing that JJackAl52!

i love actors/actresses that do just that. :)

  • You are welcome - that is how Muni played all of his roles. Be sure to get the film; it is incredible - extremely powerful story. Muni was a great actor on Broadway as well. Also read his biography written by Jerome Lawrence. It is titled - Paul Muni- ACTOR. Very comprehensive story of his life, I highly recommend it.

  • The ending is one of the greatest in film history: "How do you live?" "I steal!"

  • Totolly agree!

But don't spoil it for those who don't have seen it yet!!!

  • Oh, no, I'd never do anything like that. ;-)

  • This movie is amazing
