The wheel of life does come off at times, and when it does, what can you do? Hearbreaking total times, to state the simple and honest truth. It leaves you in a complete and utter mess.
Beautiful music and lovely video. I cried at the end when your dedication came up (and at the end of your video of Legend of the Glass Mountain). Thanks for sharing.
What a wonderful tribute to your late father. I have no doubt he was very proud of you and rightly so. I too love this music I have music in my heart.
This is my mother's favourite piece of music and I went to watch the film in Wales in late 1948. Late in the film I remember a scene where the heroine is sleepwalking towards the edge of a cliff and my mother, so engrossed in the story, to our entire family's embarrassment, screamed " No, no, don't go there, stop!! We all slid down in our seats but Mama did not notice a thing even though the entire cinema had turned to look at her and just calmly watched the rest of the film. Beautiful music.
I grew up with this sort of music just after WW11 and I can understand why your dad liked this. I can still remember the films which gave us such wonderful memories and even today when things get me down I turn to these tunes and relive the memories and it makes me feel happier. Be assured your dad was one of millions who had the privilege of living through the golden age of film music.
My name is Olwyn............ given to me by my father......who loved this piece of music and me. It was played at my wedding. The name Olwyn is ancient,,,,,, thought to be welsh but actually predates the celts to authurian legend where its meaning is .........'Daughter of a Giant'
An absolute masterpiece from Mr Williams such a prolific composer of much familar music when we were growing up.A beautiful melody and a great recording, thanks for posting.
This is a wonderful piece from a lovely film. I have it at home. When it starts, the gardener is mowing the lawn, and the french windows of the house are open. When they turn on the wireless to hear 'The Dream of Olwen', it is electrifying. Sonia Dresdel gives a great performance as Julia. Made at a time when British cinema was at its best.
T his beautiful melody was played in the interval of the film it came from at our local cinema in 1946.I was three at the time and sang along with great confidence (so my mother tells me)Everyone in the cinema came down to the cheap seats where we were sitting, and thought I was a geneouse. They gave me chocolate,.I got it on my best coat, mum was not pleased, but very proud of me,would have had me trained, but no money for that.We both still remember the tune with great joy.
wee bit like the plot for laura..... (1944) both movies i love.... in the movie...(while i live) i remember like a cliff top with french windows open...at the house....
Charles Williams, the composer of the piece, named his daughter 'Olwen' and later she emigrated to New Zealand. She had a website on which she writes about it but I haven't logged onto it for a long time.
I did some research on the origin or the title and apparently, it was originally a folk tale from a Welsh manuscript from the 13th of 14the century in which an invading Roman general lies down by a stream to sleep and dreams of a beautiful Celtic maiden named Olwen. He awakens and is convinced that she is a real person and goes looking for her. He finds her and declares his love but like Delilah she betrays him when he is sleeping and the Celts kill him.
I used to play this on the piano by ear because I liked it alot and not to sound egotistic but for someone as gifted as I was in that area, it isn't terribly hard to do.
I first heard the Dream of Olwen in the 1950's, as the theme of a radio or TV show. It stayed in the back of my mind all these years, until I found it again in your lovely video. Your dedication of two videos to your father touched me.
Last night I downloaded four versions of this lovely music from Youtube, including yours. Which recording did you use?
Thank you for this. My father aptly named Albert Tinkler was a brilliant pianist but sadly died in 2002. One of his masterpieces was his own arrangement of Dream of Olwyn, Warsaw Concerto and Rachmaninov Concerto No 2 which he intertwined so beautifully together. We played this at his own funeral service and again at my mums in 2006, and just to carry on the tradition I have asked that it be played at mine when the time comes. Just like you I loved my dad, always will and miss him terribly. x
Over 50 years ago, I had a terrible crush on a student teacher in my high school. I think it was mutual because he brought me sheet music to play after school. Dream of Olwen was one of them. I still remember how flattered I was that a college man paid attention to me! Of course today, he would have been dismissed! But when I hear this music I am a teen-ager again!
Thank you so much for this clip. I remember watching this film on the television when I was a little girl and that haunting wonderful music has stayed with me since.
I saw this movie when it was first shown, and the response from the public was amazing. So many concertos were appearing at that time such as Cornish Rhapsody,Warsaw Concerto and The Glass Mountain but Dream Of Olwyn has always been my favourite. Thank you so much
this too reminds me of my dad who also used to play it when I was a kid. He never read music but played by ear and I so wished he has taught me. Trying hard to play the piano now and I've over 50!!!!
Hi John, music is like looking into a picture, a picture paints a thousand words and music returns a thousand memories. Hope your piano lessons are sucessful, I am turned fifty and have started to learn a new language.
Thank you for playing this, it takes me back to when i was little when my dad used to play on the piano. He's long gone now, but when i hear that music i think of him. thank you for bring back the memories!
I viewed the lyrics to this great song and thought it would be a perfect song for Jackie Evancho

The song that inspired me to take up the piano as a child - my ambition to play this - and I did - not with a symphony orchestra though!

I live in Pittsburgh, born in '43. We played this in high school..........no piano.
I also haven't heard this music since '61. This recording is 'stunning'!
What's so striking about this piece is how so many people are close to the history and musicians involved.
JADORE........thanks Babygirl!
