  • I always said when my grandfather used to play this song. That sounds like Dionne Warwick in th backround but it is indeed Dee Dee Warwick(Dionne's sister)

  • @rufus317 -

    Hey Rufus,

Thats actually DC's own Jewels doing the background on this record as they did for many of his recordings.

  • To you ney, my love 2 u 4 ever.

  • Can anyone post Minnie Riperton's Sad Girl? Haven't been able to find it.

  • @barriobajaj ---Me, too...love her version of SAD GIRL.....Would really like to hear it again!

  • JUST OK

  • "Stange Feeling" is performed here by Billy Stewart & The Gems featuring Minnie Riperton (of "Lovin' You"); she is the angelic high soprano background voice behind Billy. This track is sheer perfection---Billy Stewart & Minnie Riperton may you both rest in peace, both of you left us way too young.

  • @KojiRecords Thanks for the info, always wondered who that angel was.

  • @pigfootandbeer What was not portrayed in the Cadillac Records movie was that Chess artists were put to work in running the company; if you were not answering phones (i.e. Minnie was the swtichboard operator), licking stamps, etc., you were helping someone else make records. Minnie did background vocals for Ramsey Lewis, Etta James, Fontella Bass, Bo Diddley, The Radiants, and many others while making her own recordings with The Gems and later The Rotary Connection/The New Rotary Connection.

  • @KojiRecords Thanks again. Can you give a list of some of the other recordings that angelic voice stands out on? I will be listening for her now.

  • @pigfootandbeer "Ooh Baby: by Bo Diddley; "Pushover" and the "Losers Weepers: single and album by Etta James; "Hold On" by The Radiants; "The Petal Pushers" lp; various lps by Ramsey Lewis; "Rescue Me" by Fontella Bass, just to name a few. Minnie Riperton was the greatest background singer in the world; I will be posting an article on the net with a more complete listing of Minnie's appearances on Chess-Checker-Argo-Cadet-Cadet Concept Records.

  • @KojiRecords Great, looking forward to that. Another great unsung backup singer was Dee Dee Warwick, her voice stood out in the background also.

  • @pigfootandbeer Other famous background singers: The Pointer Sisters (for Betty Davis, Bobby Wommack ["Daylight"], Sylvester); The Supremes (for Mary Wells, Marvin Gaye, Barbara McNair ["Fancy Passes"], Four Tops ["Still Water"]); Sweet Inspirations (for Aretha Franklin, Elvis); The Andantes (for all at Motown, including their being The Vandellas on recordings)., Patti LaBelle & The Bluebells (for Wilson Pickett ["634-5789"]).

  • @pigfootandbeer Check out Minnie Riperton & The Radiants-"Babyy You Got It" and "Hold On" which are both excellent examples of how Minnie was part of another Chess Records group, The Radiants, on recordings, albeit uncredited, while simultaneously in her own groups The Gems and later with The Rotary Connection and The New Rotary Connection, the latter which gave us the original version of "Love Has Fallen On Me" that the then unknown teenaager Chaka Khan heard and brought to superstar status.

  • @pigfootandbeer The Knight Brothers featuring Minnie Riperton-"Temptation's 'Bout To Get Me"; this is a little hard to clearly hear as The Knight Brothers' microphones are hotter than the background singers when they join them on the chorus; however, at the end, when the background singers do the chorus while Knight Brothers do the ad-libs, then you can hear Minnie, once again, that angelic voice at the top. This is a fabuolus record, too.

  • @KojiRecords I love that song "Temptation's bout to get me" by the Knight Bros. Thanks for the background info.

  • @KojiRecords WOW ! Billy AND Minnie in the same grooves !!!!!! Thanks for the info !

  • That's Great!

  • FIRM3 AZZ ROLLLLA!!

  • This isn't even music. What Billy Stewart does is something more than music, something greater and with higher feelings and deep soul. There will never ever be anyone that can reproduce what it is that Billy does. A true genius.
