I thik it´s that Lava and Water produce the smoke and with the Redstone it "generate" (don´t know the english word :p) it new, so that the smoke come again and again

@biggerwolf97 No redstone is directly going into the water block, hence the repeaters. The repeaters make the redstone on either side of the lava block direct to all 4 inputs/outputs.
