  • If you were to compare 1st and 3rd movement, which one do you think will be more challenging? Which one sounds the best?

I'm trying to choose 2/3 of the movements for an audition, def using 2, so I'm trying figure out which one I should use.

  • @DocsDota I like 2/3 for a nice balance. But you should use whichever you 1: do best 2: like the musicality of most and 3: will fit in your timeframe (movement1 takes longer). 2/3 is pretty traditional because 3 is flashy and 2 is calm, whereas mvt1 is kinda in between the moods (well, it's a sonata form 1st movement with a cadenza) Also movement 2 naturally moves into the 3rd harmonically (otherwise sits on the wrong side of a V-I)

  • suono secco... i finali delle note sono tutti forzati " Puaaaa" e e e Questo è da guerra!!!

  • It's a pain to accompany.

  • Well done!

  • nice

  • Haydn Trumpet Concerto BEAUTIFUL

  • i'm doing this for my grade 8 and i've learnt loads from this video. thanks :)

  • The very beginning of the cadenza is from Wynton Marsalis, and starting at 4:45 you took some from Wobisch. But I guess you made it your own by adding in the little parts that you did.

  • good job!

i'm playing this for a high school solo contest

    it's a lot of fun

  • Great job! Please check out my Haydn performance and leave comments!

I can't post a link in a comment, but look up "moderndivinci" and you'll find it!

  • This is a good performance, but I must admit that I am not too impressed with the dynamics of the piece. Technically speaking, this is nothing short of amazing, but my musical tastes sense that this could be great if even more detail was paid to the dynamics and musical aspects. Just my $.02

  • I wish i had an Eb . . . those trills are so much harder on a Bb

  • Haydn's trumpet was an Eb with only one key, wasn't it?

  • Keyed trumpets can have between one and six keys, and I believe the one used by Anton Weidinger for the Haydn had 5 keys (pad-covered holes with a mechanism for spring-closing said holes and opening them with the fingers much like how a saxophone works, just with less openings)

I have it on good authority also that this particular make had the keys in position to be operated with the Left hand (french horns still retain left-handed valves)

  • there not too bad in fairness... 1st and second valve. Dont see what difficult about that!

  • Eb trumpets are frequently used in chamber settings and also for high orchestral excerpts.

  • Check the King catalog for a latin trumpet solo. And did someone say they had an Eb trumpet? I mean I know they are fun but they are really used for 3 major works, the hummel, this one, and the neruda i believe, but an Eb cornet can be used for british style brass bands, a much more usable instrument at least for all around play.

  • hello, very good!!! I want to eventually work on this piece do you have any suggestions on how to play it well?

  • play it slowly and get faster with the semiquavers. and warm up before you do this piece to get extra lip slurs!

  • wow, that cadenza is killer, for the exception of a little fumbles, amazing player :]

  • Keep working on it. You're off to a good start, now the hard work begins. It's worth it to play this really well. Good luck!

  • hi im a highschool trumpet player

and im lookin for a latin trumpet solo

if you or anyone knows kan you pleez tell me one

  • tis fabulous ...

a few pointers ... take HUGE breaths when you have the rests, so you don't get as many unspoken notes ...

and try to use ascending phrases to crescendo and descending to diminuendo ...

loved it! im working on this ... im 16!

  • agreed, you play bether than I, but i wanna say that if you use more air and are more confident on the entries ull get it to a higher level of proffecionalism ^^ good work on the cadenza as well

  • Not so bad...But:

There are some mistakes (No metter)

But your enunciation, nicety and note is bad.

    Not very bad but bad....

I think that you are middling trumpetist.

    (But i dont know...)

You can be very good and only this should be not good.

    But good job...

You are not the worse and you are not the best!

  • I'm workingg on this too...:-)

  • This guy is pretty good, but I wouldn't quit my day job if I were him.

  • God I would love to be able to play this!

    ...maybe one day :p

It sounds amazing, well done! :)

  • Hello I am hoping to play this piece, or at least attempt this piece for solo and ensemble. I am in high school so I won't play nearly as well as someone like you but do you have any suggestions on how I should play this piece? I appreciate your opinions!!

  • yeah i have a suggestion, dont't kill the masterpiece

  • I have a suggestion. dont't be a ccockkk. Seriously, Dont't? Don tea tea.

    Have fun.

  • say what you will, but I'm just making sure you don't ruin this beautiful piece

  • Talkin to me? or Mr DBzoswski?

  • very nice i have to say, but not much dynamic contrast

  • very nicely done.

  • Is that piano a 7 and a half footer?

  • I've been playing for two and a half years and im working on this right now.

  • i'm working on this piece for my solo at the end of the year and i'm loving it

  • Very nice job with the peice, I am currently working on it myself.

  • why you play on Eb and not on a Bb trumpet?

    don't like the piano.

  • this concerto is in e flat.

  • why do you play on Bb and not on Eb

  • he is playing it on a Eb, read the discription

  • Because I have an Eb and want to use it. Nothing more than that.

  • highest note is a written Eb ... for Bb trumpets ... so it sounds Db ... and playing an Eb trumpet ... its a written Bb!

  • Excuseme

    Who is this?

  • highest note is an Eb

  • Simply delightful.

  • im very impressed, good job

  • Very nice interpretation. I am a pianist and have to say that the pianist ought to be congratulated as well! Even so, I would be honored to accompany you any day of the week. There will always be armchair critics, but they have no credibility, keep up the good work.

  • neat moustache

  • estoy con Pawosky, no toda la cadencia está escrita por él, aun así, muy bien..

  • sweet that's high i can only hit a d! top of 2nd ledger. but i am working on gettin gup there!

  • el principio es el de la version de hakan, y algunos motivos son de otra gente, no toda la cadencia e´stá escrita por el.con mib es más fácil...

  • wow great job! that had some tough runs in it! a difficult piece. you have good tone quality. what was the highest note you played? sounded like it was higher then a high C .

  • yup Written Eb on 3rd legerline.

  • But aren't you playing an Eb trumpet? Wouldn't that be a written Ab on your music?

  • indeed. but if someone's asking what the highest note in Haydn is it would suggest they havn't played it before. which would also suggest they probably don't have an Eb trumpet.

  • How do you play that? Second valve??

  • ya, on a Bb trumpet

  • Just realised in the cadenza I also played an F on top of 3 legerlines.

  • Excellent.

  • this is awesome ...

  • great job

  • This song is so legendary for trumpets you should be proud.

  • simply excellent

  • nice job...good sound and strong chops! id listen to some more recordings for style, especially slur 2 tongue 2 on the 16th notes. good control though and sweet cadenza, well done!

  • whats that last note in 5:22, nice tone by the way

  • Wow, I play trumpet and I'm no where near this standard, your tone is flawless I also wish i had a Strad! I've got a silver Besson at the moment, hope to see more vids, cheers

  • nice

  • hi how long are you playin the trumpet?

  • nice sound, cant help but notice some notes were bending down...flat

  • Yep. Eb trumpet. Still need some work on the smaller horns.

  • nice warm sound man , congratulation , QUESTION what do you tink about the stradivarius 37 is better than selmer please answer, because i want to buy it, or tellme wath is the best trumpet on the market, to classical , to jazz, to all around THANK YOU AND GOOD PRACTICE!

  • I find the Strad 37 is quite a nice horn to play. Selmer seems more of an all rounder whereas the 37 seems more set for straight classical type work. The Bach Strad C's I find quite nice for that kinda thing. the Bb's...get a silver one :P

  • thank you man, that information is very helpfull, bye.

  • Everything about this is just wrong. Wrong. Was that supposed to be a cadenza? Are you really a "graduate"?

  • let's hear your classical trumpet cadenza then.

  • the 3rd movement is the best, although I'm knackered after it it has to be my favourite. Another good one is Hummels Trumpet concerto 3rd mov.

  • ah yes the Hummel is a killer on the last movement. lots of quick tounging everywhere.

  • oh and. thanks for a real comment that wasn't spam finally. Last 5 days I'v deleted roughly 30 spam messages about adult sites from this video's comments. blocking at least 20 unique user names from posting to my videos. :S

  • i play the jupiter. it's a amazing trumpet :)

  • if i'm not mistaken my friend played this exact same piece for state solo and ensemble (in high school) she did really well too (I believe she got a score of 1)

  • Okay, amazing performance by the way. Question: are you pleased with the Bach? I am currently looking for a new professional trumpet and need some advice. Thanks.

  • Yeh I like the Bachs. theyre pretty standard proffesional grade and play well. Of course it comes down to personal preference. I'd also give Getson and Schilke a go to see which ones you like better for playing and pocket :P. I'v had my bach Bb for 11 years now and it's playing very well.

  • So it is true that the camera makes you look fat

  • Behave yourself

  • that looks likes the performing arts facility at WWU. Am i right, or mistaken?

  • Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. Clayton Performing Arts/Conservatorium Main Recital Hall.

  • Right, I realized that about 20 seconds after I posted the comment while reading your profile ;)

  • excellent playing, by the way, look at the girl in black sitting next to the piano player, she has a very fun job

  • it's very good!!

    =)

  • ok look you all make fun of him for being large look he's not large whats large is his skill level on the Trumpet, which is higher than any of ou will ever have.

  • This is wonderful playing. Please, could you post more of your trumpet performances?

  • OMG hes good~but, lose weight, girls will hang on ya'

  • I'm fat.. 275lbs and I get the girls all the time. Skinny guys have no push behind them..look at ron jeremy :-P

  • why does the frame look so wide????? or is it just you?????????

  • I didn't know they had video in 1796. Haha, I kill myself. Very nice man.

  • i felt that altough you were off to a great start, however, once it got to 2:20 or so you started to lose that nice full sound. at the cadenza, the high a's started out just a hair flat, but after that, wow, you were amazing. bravo, i wish you good luck in your career as a musician

  • davvero bravo... complimenti bel suono e buona tecnica

  • Very Good!

  • great performance. nice cadenza

  • watch Patricio Molina playing Haydn

  • That was damn good Trent, and you looked confident as you took the test.

  • when i see this vid i know exactly what makes the best, the best.. those easy notes can play any well trained trumpetplayer, but the high-low parts are only for the very better trumpetplayers.. listen to this en listen to wynton marsalis' playing.. than you can see what makes trumpetplayers such as Wynton Marsalis en Sergei Nakariakov who they are.. gods of trumpetplaying.. but anyway.. good job.. goodluck..

  • Nice job!!

I also played this piece for my D-exam (final exam on music-school in the Netherlands). Love it.I was so glad that after 7 years of learning I could play a piece like this.

Nice that they filmed it. I wish they had filmed mine so I could hear how I played it exactly.

  • You also seem very nervous, just relax a bit

  • No offense, but right now im am graduating from highschool. I recieved a spot in FLorida's all state and first chair all-county ( so I know what im discusing here), and your tone is very bleak. Its airy, and makes me want to help you out. I played this piece in sophmore year of High school , and my friend and I agree I had a better tone.

  • How many trumpeters does it take to change a lightbulb?

  • It takes 4 trumpeters to change a lightbulb.

1 to do it, and 3 others to have inflated egos and say how much better they could do it.

  • kohe; would you please post yours? your friend and you may have conflict of interest. we the third parties should evaluate to be fair.

  • no one cares

  • Kohefon, you are so incompetent I can't even believe it. No one cares about your high school all state band or your self proclaimed amazing tone. You have no right to give anyone advice, and just by the fact that you are on youtube ripping people's playing tells me right there that you blow at the trumpet anyway.

  • what's your point? you cares if your friend agrees you have a better tone? his tone isn't bleak and airy. by all means show us your video. and if you don't have the technology, i'm sure you go to a friends house and record yourself. or do you not have any friends because you have such a big ego? come, if your going to post something it should be positive like good job, or constructive criticism, like "great job, but ithink in some areas...etc" don't post something saying i have a better tone.

  • holy frick your really goood ! i would want to be your student any day !

i wanna play this peice when i'm older ... it sounds so good !

  • You have a really good sound. Love it.

  • Very nice. Great tone and interpretation. Very musical.

  • By the way, a respectable performance. You have nice tone. A couple miffs on the articulation, though. That happens to me when it's hot...

  • I've performed the Haydn on Bb before at a concert, and I just got myself an Eb. I wonder why I put myself through that... Emme, for development's sake, I'd say learn them on a Bb, then perform them on Eb later. My teacher made me learn the Molter on the D trumpet, then he let me perform it on a picc in A. It's a BIG difference, lemme tell you...

  • it was very nice. i quite enjoyed it.

i hope to play this peice any tips about it

  • Nice job, tough piece, I would be interested in the Neruda, cause I'm working on that now....

  • tell me why does those professionals always use Eb- Trumpets to interpret haydn, hummel or neruda? is it really much easier?

  • A little easier, as the harmonics are slightly further apart and the trills sit easier on the fingerings. There's also the "Because we own an Eb trumpet" issue :P

  • Very well played mate. I am practising this piece for a competition and you've inspired me all the more. By the way, would you happen to have the piano only, or do you know where I could procure the instrumental (with no trumpet)? I need it because I need an accompaniment - on cd or tape or anything.

  • There was a version done by "Music Minus One" with orchestra with the solo trumpet part removed. Google "Music Minus One" and on their website scroll down a bit till you find "HAYDN Concerto in E-flat major, HobVIIe:1; TELEMANN Trumpet Concerto in D; FASCH Trumpet Concerto in D (New Digitally Remastered 2 CD set)"

  • Thanks very much, musicalaviator, you have no idea how LONG I've been searching for this little bugger! ;-)

  • what is this? a duck??? :S

  • I agree with Kickeraudio21, a bit of Marsalis at the beginning of the cadenza, but all in all, not bad at all.

  • Did you get your diploma, this was really good. You're an awesome player, and really had some good things going. Good Job

  • You are a great musician. Congratulations! Xavier (from Chile).

  • very good!!!!

  • nice job, i see you took the wynton interpretation

  • Maradona has an IQ problem ... or an EQ problem?

  • Ive been hidin out for some more haydn! but all jokes aside, you do have a weight problem. Much love!

  • Great sound bro. There's no room in this world for musicians like us anymore. We only have the small stage to work with and you did this song very well.

  • Nice music!

  • very practiced, nice tone and tempo control, how old are you and what mouthpiece did you play on?

  • Bach 2 with a slightly widened bore/backbore. note that is a "2" (straight 2) and not 2C

  • I'd be VERY surprised if anyone offering advice is HALF as good as you. Nice job!

  • Bravo! Right from your first note I know I am hearing quality trumpet playing! BTW, are you a pilot also? I see aviator on your name.

    Good job!

  • i did some flying back in 2003, specificly 8 months doing training on Cessna C172 aircraft. I am also an avid (rabid? lol) Flightsimmer.

  • That's great! We have something in common! I am also a pilot/trumpeter. But my flying is much better than my trumpet playing. I have fun in both though. Are you playing trumpet professionally someplace? I am an amateur playing in local bands in the So Cal area.

  • There are a lot of critics out there. The problem is that most of the critics don't have the proper credentials to actually criticize something. I don't know what each of your backgrounds is in regards to music or trumpet. But to be honest, it doesn't matter. This video is of a guy who is going for master's degree in performance.. That pretty much means that he is a more than competent player. Plus, I'm sure that he gets all of the criticism and instruction that he needs from his professors.

  • Absolutely amazing. Regardless of what others say, u are an amazing trumpet player. I wish u luck in ur future and hope that u continue playing and improving!

  • I think you played most confidently for the cadenza and did a great job with it. For the rest of the movement though, it was good but you don't seem to have the same confidence and flair as you did for the cadenza

  • You have really nice tone! You are great player! Some things were rushed (little runs), but besides that, you're tone is amazing!

  • Speed does not determine pitch. Try to play a slur from G in the staff to G on top just by playing louder. Doesn't work. Air speed only factors into a change of pitch when distortion is involved (i.e., over-blowing).

By the way, great job on the Haydn.

  • Speed does determine pitch. Volume determines volume. I didn't say play louder, you can speed up your air with out increasing volume. Don't argue unless you know what you are talking about.

  • Hmmmm... I think we are forgetting air CONTROL. Speed DOES control pitch - everyone has heard "blow faster air" to get those higher notes. Air control determines volume. Your average high school player can't play high C without BELTING it. Controlling that air will allow you to play it softly AND in tune without shoving your mouthpiece down your throat.

  • for me it doesnt matter how much air really.its more like how i buzz my lips and embouchure

  • your wrong

  • nope... you are

  • I heart Joe Gray

  • I find keith dunton mildly attractive

  • Also think down when you play high. Don't plat up to the high notes, play down without actually forcing the air down. Lower your jaw and speed up your air while thinking down. Make sure you really listen during a few spots for better tuning. You did a great job, keep up the good work!

  • Good job man! You got that F-G trill at the beginning, I know that took some work. A couple things I would keep in mind when you play, air support, air direction, and intonation. When you get in the upper register it is important to speed up your air, speed determines pitch.

  • Very nice. I'm working on that piece myself for a state solo competition. Your tone quality is very nice, but I would work a little on articulation. Read what's on the page; especially, don't slur where there isn't a slur written. It also needs more dynamics. Overall, though, very nice work. It's very obvious to the listener the great amount of time you've put into this.

  • nice, but you should work on your intonation (sorry for my English)

  • Can tell me what trumpet u have nad tonation. Maybe u can put a link for scans of cadenza, some parts are awesome (if u have full concert put the link if it possible (sorry for my english))!

  • you're all right, but you're fat

  • fucking prick i cant believe u have the cheek to go on some1s video and say he was alryt and he was fat when he played amazingly in my eyes and his weight has got nothing to do with it, go get a life u stupid little person

  • hey man, i really enjoyed this...cool cadenza as well....thanx

  • ur runs get a little out of tune and sloppy toward the end, and ur first half-note f to A is kinda messy but u played it rly well. Im playing the same piece, cadenza is well thought out. nice triplets

  • great sound!

  • hey, I performed that exact piece in that exact auditorium many years ago during my own BMus!

didn't do it on an Eb, though.

nice playing, but one thing I noticed was that your articulation was kind of fluffy and unfocused at times. possibly due to nerves, though.

also, you sway from side to side (like I do), rocking like a metronome. it's a tricky habit to remove...

  • Can you please post your Neruda Concerto on here...Thanx

  • ok I'll get it on as soon as I can, which will probably be Jan 31/Feb 1 at this stage.

  • flat.

  • Very nice. The cadenza had some good parts and some bland parts that sounded outside of the tonality of the piece. However, I couldn't begin to write my own so you've got me there.

  • hmm. the cadenza was a little plain. but so is the concerto, so.. nice job anyway.

  • Nice Cadenza.
