Provided that you write your program yourself and don't copy from the work of others it doesn't matter even if somebody else has previously written a similar program. Naturally, your program once written will be protected by copyright. There are advantages in the USA to registering your copyright, but it is not essential.

Copyright does have some good aspects and bad aspects however if you created something and it was an ingenious idea wouldn't you be pissed off if other people created a sequel for it or copied it for their own benefit (selling it). Sure, its annoying but in the end everyone will be copying each other, just think you revised hard for an exam and theres this one person who always wants to copy your answers. I mean, I dont think that it is fair that somebody gets money for SELLING things that other creators own, but it has gotten to the point where people are being sued for enormous and unreasonable sums of money for copying crap for their personal use. Seth was still able to create from something that already existed and had copyrights to it, right? And that didn't "restrict" him from creative.

What I don't understand about all this, is that it says at the official copyright office that once a work is created it is automatically considered copyrighted by the creator even if he or she doesn't technically file a claim. But it helps to file a claim for legal purposes if you ever have to go to court. So how in the hell can a corporation or record company file a copyright if they didn't create the art?

I assume that in the contract it gives the rights over to the company and not the artist
