I've stared at this so many times now that I can easily see the mask as hollow. Not at first, but once it turns once, I can make myself see it as hollow for the rest of the video. What does that make me?
When the face was lying sideways i could see the hollow part of the mask , so i replayed it and when the mask was rotating vertically i tilted my head so i would look at it perpendicularly (i guess that's how you say it) and then i could see the hollow face. wow! That is bloody amazing! I had to look at this long and hard before I saw it was/seemed to be the colouring 'above' the eyes and 'under' the eyebrows that flipped the illusion on for me. And I couldn't stop it, even when thinking that the eyes on the concave side looked like lobster eyes. They did so until the 'eyebrows' came into view.
They also use this for testing schizophrenics, a healthy brain will see both sides as if they were normal. A sick or schizophrenic brain will not see the illusion at all and will see a pushed out face and a hollow pushed in face....so be glad if you cant tell the difference.
you can beat it by focusing on a hollow characteristic of the mask, by not looking at the product of the whole or individual characteristics of the hollow mask that become the illusion. In this way the periphery characteristics will adhere to your focal point and the mask will stay inverted.
@TVPapathomas It's not really a hollow mask though, The eyes are still popping out on the hollow part, just as the other side. Probably if the eyes were not popping out you would see it as hollow. So this is definitely NOT a normal mask. It is made for illusions.
@O4archer this is actually a test, the idea of the mask is not the illusion, but is how you see it. if the face is looking at you, your brain is healthy, if you can see the face from behind, like a mask, you have a "sick" brain. it was also used for LSD testing, "mind expansion". our minds, actual "healthy" minds are limited in seeing more.
@thre4t perhaps that's one part of it, but the mask also tests your ability to inhibit the illusions your brain casts, which is something I can do but only if I engage my full attention.

i can usually see it full but i know it's wrong. some of them are easier than others--this one is harder on the second go around. you did something to the nose. your eyes focus on a point and they generate an image back. my eyes are sometimes untuned, so they get various parts but not whole.
after watching this when i read teh text for a while my eyes are seeing it in a weird way as if it is in block mode, thats the only way i can describe it, did anyone else experience the weird after effect
This works for me only about 70-90 degrees of 360 on backside, it is disturbing, that when the mask is near sideways, it starts to look like it was plexiglass and I can see both sides at the same time, although it should not be possible. I see 2 noserings too at the same time.

It depends. If you can't process the image, then it won't make sense in its whole, but you saw it. I've learned this from seeing it then not seeing it. And by the way, all that's there are shades. No this is not CGI. The Programming credit can have many different meanings according to the context. Not so for the Painting or Sculpture credit!!! It is NOT a digital 3D sculpture. It is a physical plastic mask rotating on a turntable and passively videotaped by a stationary camcorder. The ONLY thing that's computer controlled is the rotation pattern of the turntable; it was choreographed to give a good impression of the illusion. In retrospect, I should have rotated it always in the same direction... It would have been a lot simpler and clearer.

You are right, up to a certain point. Namely, this illusion does not work in real life if you see it with both eyes FROM A SHORT VIEWING DISTANCE. However, if you see it from a long distance (more than 2-3 meters; this varies from viewer to viewer), then you still get the illusion. When you see it with only one eye, you get the illusion even at shorter distances.
BTW this doesn't actually work in real life. The reason in because humans have built in depth perception, so each eye works with the other to figure out how far away something is. On a screen, this is obviously impossible- we are showing something 3d on a 2d screen.
When you view this in real life you see very quickly it is a hollow mask, due the fact we can see where things are in space.
The eyes work awesomely, but the nose ring just doesn't seem to work for me. It seems to be going the wrong way on the convex side. Neat video, though.

No this is not CGI. The Programming credit can have many different meanings according to the context. Not so for the Painting or Sculpture credit!!! This was an actual art piece and contest...you can find information about the 2008 Best Illusion of The Year contest on the web, it was held in Naples Fl. I will send you a link if you would like. The nose ring and popped out eyes on the hollow side gave it away. I could tell right off the bat by the way those two moved in relation to everything else...

I have been working with hands, too, and I have an example but it is hard to film. I have a project on torsos but it takes too long with real sculptures. Your videos are astounding!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!

Some scientists noticed that non schizophrenic people, when looking at the hollow face, have 2 parts of their brain getting connected: the one that collect visual info and the fronto-parietal one that is charged of its interpretation. This connexion is supposed to allow the brain to use passed experiences: used to seeing human faces, the subjects tend to understand the hollow face as a normal one. They made out that this process has a defect in schizophrenic people who're not duped by the image.

because everything (including the eyes) in the side where they rotate, any one who watched the dog illusion knows that everything is facing opposite way it appears, because its faceing in, you see it almost the same from any angle, so it appears the eyes are following you (you see eyes move more tan face cause eyes go in deeper than the face

This is a very good animation (computer model, whatever) but it performs exactly as it would if it were real, FOOL.

It is NOT a digital 3D sculpture. It is a physical plastic mask rotating on a turntable and passively videotaped by a stationary camcorder. The ONLY thing that's computer controlled is the rotation pattern of the turntable; it was choreographed to give a good impression of the illusion. In retrospect, I should have rotated it always in the same direction... It would have been a lot simpler and clearer.

acupuncture I hear envolves preforming what is called an insult that causes chemical's to rush to the wound and do something. I am not sure that what happen's is with this "insult (hollow space in your body)" you turn to whoever caused it in much the same way as to this hollow mask and it being to much to comprehend you come out saying pretty much what you do with the hollow mask and bang you have it your own quack. So chinese medicine does really look at causes of mentall illnes

So it's explained as being hollow but start's as a normal face and that when it turn's will you see it or not. so at this point your like what is that? and then the answer to your question is? and then it being to much to comprehend it comes back as something else because you say something else and somehow later the world rushes in? Atleast, I guess, people aren't swearing at thing's anymore. I am just curious at how things work. Prephaps that's how illusion's work by preforming an insult.

You are right, up to a certain point. Namely, this illusion does not work in real life if you see it with both eyes FROM A SHORT VIEWING DISTANCE. However, if you see it from a long distance (more than 2-3 meters; this varies from viewer to viewer), then you still get the illusion. When you see it with only one eye, you get the illusion even at shorter distances.

BTW this doesn't actually work in real life. The reason in because humans have built in depth perception, so each eye works with the other to figure out how far away something is. On a screen, this is obviously impossible- we are showing something 3d on a 2d screen.
When you view this in real life you see very quickly it is a hollow mask, due the fact we can see where things are in space.

It works, but not as well. It will work in real life if you use only one eye, OR step far enough to not see all the fine details accurately.
