One of the biggest difficulties in this whole issue is this:
The Quran and Islam as a whole is clear in what it dictates to muslims. There is a very large element within islam that support jihad, and a large element that does not.
And there is no way to tell them apart, and words like 'we' imply no difference.

Again, there is no battlefield reference, and enemies do not seek refuge. Only people wanting to convert to islam do that, so of course you give them refuge.
In the Quran, the peace that is referred too comes when there are no non muslims left.

First, there are 167 verses that preach intolerance, and violence.
Those verses are documented on various internet sites, and can be verified via english translation of the Quran on Saudi's Ministry of islamic affairs web site.
Second, muslims are provoked by disagreeing with them. And you can find a lot of documentation proving that. For example, 1 cartoon and muslims riot and destroy property all over Europe.
